Tire spinning paint

This was a classroom investigation taking a look at how mud may fly off a spinning tire. The tire is spun using a electric drill and the mud is replaced with colored tempura paint. The original file of video were lost during some computer trouble but were recently found. I used this in my classroom once or twice but discarded it for demonstrations with clearer results.

Another educational video from one of the best science teachers in a hundred years! I can’t wait to see what you’ve made for us this time.. 👍

I think I'll stick with marbles for the demo and just play your video for the fun of paint splatter. Thanks for doing this so that I don't have to and congratulations on the data recovery.

Thank you for sharing. Well presented For anyone curious about more advanced topics related to these demos, and how they might impact the answers you give or receive for this question: they may vary based on how deep your analysis goes. (Tip for trying to dig deeper: as you note your hypothesis, always note your assumptions!) Effects from fluid mechanics: - The "no-slip condition" and how that influences the results - The starch potentially making our fake mud a "Non-Newtonian fluid" The reference frame: - rotating frame of reference - inertial reference frame - Coriolis effect (Coriolis force) Other effects from: - Angular acceleration of tire - Friction between fluid and tire - Geometry and depth of tire's tread I'm sure many others related effects or impacts that are beyond my knowledge - both more trivial ones and more complex ones. Maybe others can pitch in or discuss It's amazing how rich and interesting a seemingly simple experiment can be!

I’ve been trying to think of a simple way to demonstrate tangential velocity on a spinning object. This is awesome!

Regardless of centrifugal/centripetal semantics, I think we all can agree that masses will move in a straight line unless acted on by an external force.

It also looks like the paint is sent flying in periodic bursts. It seems to me like the patch of tire that is wetted at the start of the experiment has more grip, causing it to be able to grab and throw more paint.

there were two surfaces that were tested. On the surface of the flat circle shape and on the wheel track. The liquid was moving away from the centre as it was projected out by the force for the surface test. While the liquid was projected towards the direction where the wheel was rotating towards for the track test.

I've experienced this but as water coming off a bike wheel. It's more complicated on a bike. The front wheel has the water sheared off by the wind of moving forward and the water at the rear tends to form a nice GT strip down the length of your back.

Or like the late, great Danish pianist comedian often did during his performances. Licking the index finger on one hand, while using his opposite hand to flip the pages of sheet music, while looking for the last couple of notes to a tune he was playing on the grand piano. I’m glad to have seen one of the last performances of Victor Borge (his real name was Børge Rosenbaum) before his death at the respectable age of 91 on new years eve, 2000.)
