Tire Safety Check - Don't Drive on Crack!

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

Tire safety is extremely important. This video shows how to check for dry rot even if the tire appears to have plenty of useable tread left. Bonus footage at the end is at Ron Fellows Race School in Parhump, Nevada. Thanks for stopping by the Ozzstar channel, please Subscribe and Comment. -Glen

    Good to know. As I’m looking to replace one tire due to bad struts on one side. I noticed tiny small hairline cracks (nothing huge) in between the groove. Thinking replacing just one as other have 8/32 left but debating now since you warned me about potential blow out! Yikes. Guess Costco going to earn my $980 this weekend lol

    Even better. Get 303 protectant and spray on all components you don't want to fail, tires, cv axle, ball joint, suspension rubbers, belts, hoses, wiper plates, etc.. I buy it by the gallons.. saves huge $$$ and makes your car look like new, better for resale to..

    I noticed cracks a coupe weeks ago just above the bead on my E150 van, matching set with lots of tread left. Put it off, but filed away as needed to be done. Yesterday front left blew out with no warning, lost all pressure instantly. Just 10 mins before I was on the highway doing 70 in rush hour traffic. Luckily was off the highway and only doing 30 when it blew. Lesson learned. Sitting at tire shop now getting a new set.

    I agree that safety is important of course especially if you have children. Very good advice. Unfortunately for some of us drive on cracked tires because I can't afford the new tire high prices that are ridiculously marked up and they're mostly poor quality unless you spend a lot more on Michelin. And trucks and vans destroy the front end tires. New or old they get destroyed anyways.

    Thanks! Super useful. I have a motorcycle with 13 year old tire on the front of all places, 10 year old tire on the rear. But the cracking is almost undetectable, very very tiny sort of crackling that I bet is on the less than a millimeter deep, actually far less than that I could probably sand it to test, anyway it was great to see that cut away and learn what the dangerous cracks are! Pretty sure these were garaged and I so they're probably fine for me to relearn, I'll just assume that I can't go all Indy 500 on them, so the next 10,000 miles will be perfect for me to take 'er easy and be extra cautious while I get back into the swing of riding, then get new tires-and make sure to break them in this time (learned the hard way :)-then have some fun!

  • @ozzstars_cars

    @ozzstars_cars

    If I were you I'd replace those motorcycle tires asap. Not only are they old and dry rotted but the rubber is hard and brittle. Motorcycles need traction when leaning. New tires will be soft and pliable sticking to the road. Don't risk your health or someone else's life over $500.

    Dry rot will definitely screw you over if you're in the middle of nowhere. I've always wondered why the gauge cluster keeps giving me low tire pressure messages. Then I realized the tires had cracks and were dry. There's tips you can use to find out if the tire is in the need of replacement due to dry rot: 1. Try moving the tires with one finger. Release the parking brake in order to check if the tire is movable with one finger. If the tire moves with one finger then the tire doesn't need to be replaced. If it doesn't move and you try moving it with 2 fingees or your even your entire hand then replace it. 2. Coloration of the tires. Check to see if it's gray. If it's gray then you may need to replace the tire. 3. Cracks (obviously). These things will get large when you drive fast. So it's best to replace them immediately because sometime in your life it'll get you.

    Hello - what do you mean if the tires “moves?”

  • @SeanAlegator

    @SeanAlegator

    @markostertag1101 if the tire moves then the tire doesn't need to be replaced. What I mean that if the tire moves while trying to move it with 1 finger, the tire doesn't need to be replaced. Just put your car in park without the parking brake on and try moving it with one finger with pressure. If it moves back and forth then the tire is fine. If it doesn't then the tire must be replaced since that's a sign the tire has lost grip or it's dry rotted.

    Tread depth is important only because it is measurable and good for legal inspection. Rubber is rubber so it needs to be flexible. Assume u waste 1 tire in every set and change a bit early. Be safe. Maybe 20 years ago, rear left tire exploded going 100 kmh 60 mph. a station wagon. Old tires. We were 5 people in the car. It was terrifying. If it had been the front tire or a bit faster, could be fatal. I always change the tires every 3 4 years or after 40 50 k kms 30k miles. Some of the tires still have half of the tread or are good for 1 more year. I dont care

    Funny I came across this video. I'm a used car dealer, and I just sold a 1997 Dodge Ram 1500. I got it from auction with 40k miles. I don't know if they were the original tires or not, but I tried to decipher the date of manufacture, and I couldn't because I don't know how to decipher 3 digit date codes. Tires started using 4 digits in the year 2000, so by having 3 digits, the tires were from 1999 or older. But there was enough tire tread to pass state inspection, so I sold it.

    23+ year old tires at highway speed is not a good idea. Have you considered the liability this puts on your business even if the vehicle is sold As Is?

  • @vivillager

    @vivillager

    Жыл бұрын

    @@ozzstars_cars, actually, that's what AS-IS does, disclaim liability, or rather the implied warranty of merchantability. UCC 2-314 explains that unless excluded or modified, consumer goods are to be merchantable, or of average fit and quality of comparable goods. In regards to used cars, that means that the car would provide safe and reliable transportation (American Suzuki Motor Co. v Carney, Skelton v General Motors, Carlson v General Motors). But like I said, it says "unless excluded or modified". That means that the implied warranty for merchantability can be disclaimed, and even points to the section that explains the process and what it means, UCC 2-316. It states that by disclaiming the merchantability, the consumer is buying goods without expectation that the goods are fit. In regards to a car, the car will not provide safe, and will not provide reliable transportation. And it explains that the seller must use language in common understanding that the merchantability has been disclaimed, and gives examples "with all faults", or "as-is". Not only that, I also won't sell unless the customer signs the FTC Used Car Buyer's Guide. It informs the customer that the car being purchased could have defects, such as a bad engine, bad transmission, a broken frame, and also damaged tires. AS-IS means that the customer agrees, in writing, that the car is not fit for the road. So the question would be, how could I be expected to be liable if the customer, in writing, understood that the vehicle was unfit for the road? As far as I knew, I thought he was going to park it in his yard and use it as a lawn ornament. I never claim that any of my cars are fit for the road. I don't have time to disassemble each car down to the bare frame and inspect each and every bolt, nut and screw. I didn't even know about the tires on the truck until the customer came along and was nit-picking at every minor detail. People try that to get a deal. They want to pay less, and get free upgrades. I do neither. If they want to buy, that's great. If not, no problem, I sell to someone else. I apologize for the long comment, it's just that some people try to tell me that AS IS means something else. I had one person tell me that AS-IS means that the car is perfect "as it is". I know what AS-IS means.

    Those are young tires for having that bad of cracking. I used to swear by BFGs but they crack as bad as the Yokohamas you took off in the video. I have some TSL Super Swampers I paid $300-$400 a piece for nearly 20years ago that don't have any cracks(I don't run them anymore/offroad spare only). I've had cheap Chinese tires hold up better than some of the Name Brands. I think it has to do with the amount of UV protectants the manufactures put into the rubber when they make it. I started years ago only using Mequires #40 as it is one of the few water based and UV protecting tire shines, but I've also heard good things about the 303 Aerospace.

    @@ozzstars_cars Exposure to the elements here in CO really affects the tire condition noticeably. At the same time I bought those tires for my daughter's RAV4 in 2014, I also bought a new set of tires for my wife's Camry. For the first 4 years, both cars were parked in the garage. But the RAV4 pretty much stays outside the garage for the last 2 years since my daughter took it to college where she has no garage facility. The difference in amount and severity of cracks between the tires on the RAV4 and Camry is quite significant. The same 6-yr old tires on the Camry barely show any crack at all. Regardless, I plan to replace the tires soon as well. I don't want my family to drive on tires older than 8 yrs old, regardless of tread depth and absence of crack.
