Tire Rotation 101 (with ONLY 2 Jack Stands) | RAM1500 Maintenance

Tire Rotation 101, the best way to get the most life out of your tires by simply using this pattern when rotating your tires with only 2 jack stands. I also look into why we want to rotate our tires from a more mechanical stand point because its not all just about gaining tire life but also preventing wear on other component like your rear differential. Very easy to do and a great way to extend the longevity of the vehicle.
Now before you start jacking up your own vehicle make sure you have some jack stands and a decent Jack. IDEALLY you want a bottle jack because it can ask like a jack stand if you set it up properly. So you'll want both your jack stands under the rear axles and use your bottle jack to lift the front end (one side at a time). As simple of a process as rotating your tires way seem there are some safety steps to be taken. having your vehicle fall of your jack can easily ruin a weekend that no amount of beer could fix. ideally you'll want 4 jacks but as I mentioned if the bottle jack seals let go it can only fall down so far acting as a "semi jack stand".
As I mention most shops rotate tires a pretty affordable price because they get to put your vehicle up on a hoist and take the tires off and poke around to see of they can ding ya for other repairs. so if ya don't feel comfortable just take it to a shop and they'll do it for ya in 30 mins.
Anyways guys as always hope you enjoyed the video!

    You could easily just use the same rotation pattern each time and still get each tire to be on each point of the vehicle. Take both rear wheels and go straight forward. The front wheels need to switch sides when going to the back. Every 4th rotation will result in the wheel being back in its original location.

    If you do the rears to front, then cross the fronts to opposing rears - every 4th rotation will have each tire at each position so that by the 5th rotation you're back where you started. I've always done this and generally I have to replace tires for hardness/cracking before mileage and wear issues.

    I only use 1 jack (no stands). First I loosen all the lugs on every wheel. Then i start on the front right and replace it with the spare (temporarily). I move that wheel to the same side back. After replacing that one, I move that wheel I just took off from the right rear to the front left and replace that. Then I move to the back left and replace it with the one I took off from the front left. Then I move that tire to the front right and replace the spare with the wheel I took off from the rear left. easy-peasy. Takes me 35 minutes total. You may have to vary the procedure with your recommended tire rotation patttern.

    So, You end up using only one Jack stand as security? Thank you for this. I rotate my tires in a cross pattern and was racking my brain on how to safely operate the task. Did not think about the spare tire. 🙃

    Crossed my mind too but it’s a truck so it’s higher up and he’s able to stick himself under there. I guess there’s a chance it could drop back down so you’d have to be careful not to be under anything or lift ur head up

    OK so, I’m curious; I had to go back and re-watch the first part of the video again to make sure I heard what I thought I heard but if you say you went to trade school on this stuff which I don’t know exactly what it is you went to trade school on but I’m just curious; why do you alternate between the crisscross pattern and the standard front to back, back to front pattern? I’ve always been told that really the only time you would use the front to back, back to front method is if you’re running directional tires or wheels.

    Hey what’s that jack called where you lifted up the back end and front, so you could fit your jack stands? Or something close to that nature if it’s pricey. It’s okay to lift it up from the Center of the diff? Sorry I’m new to this.

    It's a bottle jack. they are super nice and handy and cheap. you'll have to get down on the ground to pump them up but like a 20 ton bottle jack is like 50 bucks. and yes for most truck center of diff is a great place to lift the rear end. just try not to lift on a drain plug at the bottom lol

    I've got to disagree on the one rear wheel wearing out faster. Your differential carrier ring gear is offset as you point out, but your two axles are centered in the carrier, so they actually are nearly identical in length. Even if they were not, the open dif distributes torque to each rear axle at different amounts all of the time. Any wear associated with that mechanic would be negligible compared to the tire wear from the differing weight of the vehicle over each wheel and the forces of the weight shifting during turns. This plus each wheel's alignment is making the tires wear more in different areas.

  • @TheGettyAdventures

    @TheGettyAdventures

    2 жыл бұрын

    you are probably not wrong the wear from the different axles is probably very minimal. It's just what we were taught when I was going through trade school. I'm sure if you broke it down in a scientific form there would be some difference in wear but in the real world like you pointed out each tire is probably sitting slightly differently that alone would also cause different wear.

    I'd invest in an impact. Makes it super easy and quick. However, keep it at its lowest setting when putting the lug nuts back on and finish with a torque wrench.
