I think I've mentioned this before, but I keep a minimalist toiletry bag (in a tiny bag that was designed to clip onto a keychain!) in my purse at all times, and I keep that in my personal item bag. That will get me through a week if needed. Then I put my more complete toiletries kit in my rolling carry on. That way, if they check it and lose it, I still have the basics to get me by if they lose my case. Remember, most places you visit will have soap, shampoo, toothpaste, etc.

Tip1: I use the packing cubes yes, with my clothes as flat as possible. I have tried rolling and folding methods before, but I can definitely fit much more clothes in a cube if I organize them flat. Tip2: I place the bag with my cords and charger and phone paraphernalia right at the top of my personal item. This way I have easy access to it at the airport if I have time, and in the airplane for movies and entertainment.

My mail order pharmacy only uses those large bottles & says they cannot send any extra labels. They have made the local pharmacy prices prohibitively high for most of my meds so I saved small bottles from my local pharmacy & peeled big bottle labels onto them. So nice to hear I can use smaller pill organizers.

Great ideas and organization. When I travel, it is to a destination where I will work for a year so I usually have two checked bags. In my carry on, I have underwear and a couple of outfits in case my bags get lost. But the important lesson I learned was to put all my electric cables into my purse along with my computer, phone and Kindle--never separate the device and its cord. This makes for a heavy purse but I never get stuck without the cables. I also carry a pair of underwear and clean shirt in my purse just in case.

Spent 12 days in Costa Rica in 3 climates with just a carry on and back pack. Used the compression cube idea for my spare set of items in my backpack. Setting it down on the bottom of the pack…genius…it ‘disappeared’. Reducing my liquids bag by premoistening cotton squares with makeup remover not only eliminated the need to bring the micelle liquid but also compacted the cotton squares! And lastly…tried to make my hair look like yours which I think is travel ready…oh well…2out of 3…is not so bad. 😁😁😁

I always carry my medications in my bag that I can slip under the seat in front of me. I use Tylenol tunes, get the pharmacy to make me new labels, and attach to the tubes. When I was still working, I went into the local military bases/forts/VA hospitals and had to have prescribed meds with the labels on it. I also carry my husband's medication too. I have a much smaller electronic bag, it rolls up, and I am able to get the AC adopter in it.

We are planning our first vacation via plane (beyond our usual road trip/ferry etc) since 2018 for February or March. Your videos are getting me super excited and making lists. We even got the TSA pre-approval to hopefully cut down on the stress at security. Your channel is an amazing resource. You're also validating my pouch/bag/purse obsession. lol Anyhow- thank you for sharing all that you do. 😊 We're excited to travel again with a little bittersweet tagged on. It sounds weird that a pet kinda dictated our travel, but we had an elderly dog that got really difficult to find boarding as our favorite place went out of business in 2019, he also started going deaf. Then the world shut down which was kinda perfect timing. As it slowly opened back up we just started doing the road trip with the doggo thing which in all our years we had never done. It worked well, oddly, his new loss of hearing worked to our advantage in the hotel- because he didn't bark at every little noise. He loved the attention that anyone gave him, he was an absolute ham. 😋 Lemme tell you- when you find a gem of a pet friendly hotel in the middle of a pandemic, it's like the clouds parted and makes things so much less stressful on more than one level. Sadly he passed this last August at 16 1/2 yrs. There in lies the bittersweet. We are now free to move about the planet. 🧡💛🧡💛🐶

Hello Laurie. I am UK 50 plus who loves your travel hacks. Thank you. I have been to Houston as a kid. AWESOME! . I had to smile recently on one flight Oct 23 after I followed your organization/pack to the letter. I hit the trays with everything perfect. I mean absolutely perfect! Not a metalic thread for miles, no big skirt! The security guy was so taken aback at my Houston Pilots Wife packing that he had to compliment my trays! Best packed backpack he informed me! I made the grade! Awaiting boarding I noticed and had time to consider how much sense everything made. Unfortunately Nice return to UK was a different animal. French Soaps and giant beach towels and a second bag seemed to throw me. I fell into security line hot and and had makeup, medical and empty liquid containers flying everywhere. For some reason packing in the apartment had not gone so well as home. But the good news was no one in Nice cared, other passengers stepped around me and a gentleman on the other side of the ropes assured me it was all fine. Throw it all in the trays! Failure! This would never happen to Laurie!!!! It was so much easier to get it right! I think my overall hack would be to try your best to take less cloths and Google a laundrette ahead of time, if you are not wishing to splash on an in house Hotel laundry service. I think they are great places to see the real life and real people. Also a few spare zippy sandwich bags ready for the re the repack! I am off again soon and I am aiming for outward and return efficiency!!!! I am pretty sure I will benefit from the turbulance video rewatch too!!! It's a bit of a cyclone hot-spot! How fantastic that you educated me on travel from Houston to the UK! All the Wonders of our world! Thank you.

Great tips as usual Laurie, thank you. I have a "Skycase" pill container with a lot of compartments that holds all my pills, prescription and OTC. I have not used it flying overseas, but I do keep it in my 'just in case' motel bag that stays in my vehicle at all times, then transfer to my personal item bag if I'm flying. I think I might just get my pharmacist to print out separate labels and carry them separately for flying, none of the medications are controlled substances. Good tip about the Sudafed, there are no restrictions on buying it here in Canada, so I was surprised that they made me show them my ID and took a photocopy of it when I brought a small box (5 tablets, I think) in the USA. I'd have trouble with Mexico, I have awful pain in my eustacian tubes when I fly and Sudafed is the only thing that helps. It's a good reminder that something can be quite normal in your country but illegal in another one, and you have to do your homework before travelling anywhere new. One good example: Here in Ontario, pot is completely legal. It is also legal in Michigan. But it is illegal to cross the border between the two with it. I never use it myself, but apparently every day people are arrested for having it in their vehicle when they drive across the border here.

For prescription pills I have the pharmacist print out an extra label for me, and I pack the pills I need for the trip into the small silicone zip bags with the pharmacy label. Each pill type has its own labeled mini bag. No bulky pill bottles. I do the same for over the counter pills with just a typed label or cut out portion of the box they came in. Never had a problem. For short trips in the US, you can use the multi-day pill containers with no problem.

I have a smaller amount of cables/electronics, but I use the extra space in my travelon cable pouch for other flight essentials that I may use on the flight, such as a hair tie, ear plugs, chapstick, a baggie with ibuprofen or other pills, a granola bar, a pen, and I can printed boarding passes in the side zip pouch too. If I pack a purse, this allows me to zip it into my suitcase instead of having it in my personal item.

I found a really useful thing in Japan. It's like a lanyard you can attach to your phone. I've never had an airline call me for it but I guess if you're worried, you could tuck it under your shirt. I know it's not a lot of space, it's just one less thing to worry about, especially since I have my personal item packed before but have phone out till I leave so I'm not thinking "will my phone fit?". Also, if you're anything like me, I pull my phone out all the time at the airport/on the plane, not to mention things like digital boarding pass etc, it's just easier access than keep going in and out of a bag

My husband and I use Cotopaxi backpacks because they are super strong and light weight. We traveled to Alaska 14 days with only our backpacks, no checked luggage. We use many of your travel hacks. Baggies are the best because they weigh nothing, take up no space, and can be tossed when the contents are used up. Plan to do laundry.

I’m going to Europe for the Christmas markets using a carry on bag. I’ll pack a packable tote or duffel bag in my carry on and put my dirty clothes in the tote to check on the way home. However, I am getting concerned about this, so was wondering why you could not just take a picture of the Rx label? We have way too many medications to take bottles, not to mention they are not convenient. I have not asked my pharmacist about this yet, but I did ask my nurse practitioner and she stated she had never been asked for copies of prescriptions before for travel.

Because separating pills from their corresponding bottles causes Customs agents to have to dump out the pills and find out for themselves which bottle they belong to, if any; causes them more work and hassle. If any of your meds are prescribed controlled substances, what you're doing is beyond high risk. And as already said, certain countries WILL arrest on suspicion alone, guilty until proven innocent.

As an American who has traveled extensively, and lived in Scandinavia for years, best learned is, if one is traveling with any prescribed controlled substances, what you're doing is beyond high risk; and if stopped and challenged, would cause more delay and trouble than would be the case if a prescribed controlled substance is in its own bottle, and in the purse. Customs agents are extremely busy, and not prone to niceities when it comes to even legitimately prescribed narcotics. Both bottles and pills must match, pills IN the bottle. The pharmacy contact information is on the bottle, no need for a cumbersome collection of pictures, paperwork, unmarked pill cases, which the agents would have to spread out and compare to your documentation and pictures. Which in the eyes of Customs, could be false. In fact, I've had to go through extra security, and once they quickly see the bottle, the information on it, AND that the pills are IN it, match the label, they can immediately call and verify this if they choose. They never have, because there's easy, no hassle proof. One or two trips isn't sufficient when it comes to this issue. I dare say more extensive world travel doing what you did could very easily result in harsh consequences. Especially in countries that arrest first, and if very lucky, MAY let you out later...if at all. And that's seriously no joking matter. As for prescriptions in general, my pharmacy provides very small bottles that hold exactly what I need for each trip. My doctor's will also prescribe at my destination within the U.S., at a pharmacy there. Outside of the U.S., those very small bottles aren't at all in the way of anything.

Husband's insulin was flagged at Hong Kong airport security, he kept it in the original packaging and had a letter from his doctor saying what it was and its purpose. Once they read the letter we were allowed to proceed

@@SarahMitchell-gz9uz As said, when out of the country, there's no actual proof a letter is legitimate. In fact, nowadays even in the U.S. it's not. Medications in their original and corresponding bottles/containers is paramount. I never hassle with unnecessary documents. Again, one or two trips don't provide a comprehensive picture, in comparison to regular travel through multiple airports and countries. Know the rules and requirements for each and every one of them.

I desperately want to take a glitzy gown & shoes to wear to Rick's Cafe in Casablanca, Morocco but will never wear them again for the rest of our 20 day trip! Am I being crazy? I have the space & weight in my luggage.

Maybe you can find something second hand and donate it while there. Most people wear those things only once so there's lots of good quality available in thrift/consignment shops

Hi, I will pack LMNT for the b12 and salt but would only take them if your doc says they are okay. Powder is allowed.

I was going through Atlanta and got yelled at for my crossbody bag. They made me take it off and put it in my other bag. I left the other bag unzipped, only because the zipper was giving me trouble. I got yelled at by someone else for that and told to zip it up. When I told him the zipper wasn’t working, he said “I don’t care, you aren’t going any farther until it’s zipped”.

Somebody was having a bad day! I just have to look beyond the negative and mean approach and figure something out else is bringing out the response. It’s a stupid zipper. 🙄

Great video Laurie! I am still having issues with all of the items with lithium batteries which might have to be moved to my backpack in the event my carryon gets gate checked. I have 2 spare phone batteries, my little digital camera batteries, my electric toothbrush (have dental issues and have to take it), my USB refrigerated insulin carrier, my laptop, my light up makeup mirror, etc. How on earth do people manage this?

Well….it’s easier to manage when you don’t carry as much I suppose. I carry a backup charger that goes into the plane cabin with me. Doesn’t need to be taken out at TSA. It holds enough of a charge that I don’t need anything else. I use my phone for photos, so no camera batteries. I take an iPad in lieu of a laptop. I don’t take any makeup when I travel (it’s freeing!), aside from sunscreen and chapstick. My electric toothbrush goes right into my carry on. No problems there. I don’t check anything. Ever. On the rare occasion my bag is gate checked, I let it go. Everything I need on the plane is in my personal item bag.

Hi! The toothbrush can be checked. Regular AA or AAA batteries can be checked but you can double check by going to tsa.gov (site is down today) and in top right is What Can I Bring). The light up mirror should easily be checked as well.

LOVE it! How can we word it with major grocery store brands? Can we ask for a smaller bottle for some of the pills instead of taking the vast amount?
