Tips to learn to ride an electric unicycle

Thanks to InMotion for sending me a loaner Glide 3 electric unicycle. They didn't pay for this video or even know I would make it. This is just the lead up to a review I'll be doing on www.electrek.co to review their V10 electric unicycle (amzn.to/2Jkyvxx), and I figured I'd film my learning path as an interesting and entertaining experience.

This brought back great memories! I had a unicycle as a teen. After losing my leg below the knee, I was determined to get on the unicycle again - but it was a challenge idling and going backwards. Sure was fun watching you learn! I also just started my winter ebike conversion project.

This is one of the best videos I have seen so far because all these things you mentioned are the things that I have been doing opposite and that's the reason I ended up with a elbow fracture, I wish I have seen this video before. After seeing this video my whole psychological perspective on how to ride the wheel has changed, too bad I can put it into practice now because of the fracture but once I heal I will definitely follow your advise . Thank you so much for such wonderful video content.

At sufficient speed, about 7 to 8 mph for most EUCs (less for some), the EUC will become self-stable and the rider no longer has to make balance corrections. This is because an imbalance causes the EUC to tilt and steer into the direction of imbalance, and at sufficient speed, the EUC will self-correct on it's own. I started off with a V8F at 3 to 5 mph, balancing similar to riding a bicycle at slow speed, constantly steering to maintain balance. After doing 15 minutes or so at a tennis court doing beginner drills like using the screened fence to mount, rock back and forth, do short runs, I ventured away from the fence using arm flailing: flail left to twist the EUC right and vice versa, to steer for balance and direction, using the same principle as riding a bike at slow speed and was able to do laps on my first attempt. While learning to ride at slow speed is something that is usually learned later, it made me more aware of what happened when I increased speed a bit. I moved to a long straight, and at around 8 mph on my V8F, it became self-stable, I no longer had to make any balance corrections, relaxed my arms, and could essentially just stand still at 8 mph or so while riding in a straight line. I was aware that nothing had clicked mentally, but instead I was simply riding fast enough for an EUC to become self-correcting and stable. It was then that I learned to tilt steer. First small tilts to see how the V8F would respond, some mild weaves, then large radius turns. The next step was to learn how much to tilt the EUC versus how much to lean, depending on speed. At lower speeds, the EUC is tilted more than the rider leans, at higher speeds (15 mph or more), the EUC is tilted less than the rider leans. I then worked on being able to look | move around a bit without upsetting balance or changing direction, such as looking back over my shoulder for traffic, which is mostly a case of trust when riding an EUC fast enough for it to be stable.

Hi Micah! I love your videos. I recently purchased 50 QB cells and your 18650 kit (from your site)for my 500 watt bicycle. I get 12 miles at full speed (27 mph) including hills! Once I hit 12 miles I can no longer go 27 mph without my motor stopping , but I can switch my bike to eco mode which limits it to 10 to 12 mph. Doing this allowed me to get 20+ more miles off of it as it was only pulling 10 amps Max vs 21 amps on high power mode. Just want to say your kit made it so easy to assemble. I don't know how Jehu messed that up LOL

Haven't watched your channel in a while, but last time I did, you had tried an electric skateboard and based on your remarks about safety, I didn't think you'd take to it. Guess that was an incorrect assumption. 60 here, and I just ordered an EUC. Protective gear will be purchased soon. Very soon. Hope I can learn to ride it quickly as it will be a nice alternative to the ebike which has, for the most part, given the car an early retirement.

At the risk of distracting you from your new pursuit of unicycling I was wondering if you have ever covered the pros and cons of different designs for hub motors. I want to add one to my beach cruiser but dont want it to add drag if I just ride the bike without the assist. I heard that some of the motors introduce drag when the bike is being pedaled without power assist. What type should I choose? Great channel, thanks

He has a great video where he shows how to connect 2 hub motors on a fat tire bike to a single throttle, potentially bypassing a controller and with a high voltage battery. Not sure if you intended your beach cruiser to ride through sand dunes, haha, but I'm imagining that'd be one way to get the power you'd need.

Hi Mike, it’s me again with my ussual childish questions. I noticed on some BMS,they have low voltage detection as 2.55 and over voltage at 4.28v and from what I’ve learnt so far, I know these aren’t good cuts offfs for a li ion battery. What is the real cut off of these batteries. Coz am confused if it’s 2.5 or its 3v. But why do SOME bms detect low voltage cut of at 2.5v instead of 3v?

I guess that would depend on your commute. The bike trail runs right behind my house so it's convenient for me and I use my ebike for errands as well as enjoyment all the time and love it. It can help learners balance more easily if there's (relatively) lower pressure in the chamber, as this leads to a larger contact surface of the wheel with the ground when you're resting your weight on it. There's time enough to raise the pressure later if you're looking for energy efficiency or optimum ride smoothness or whatever.

Glide 3 (inmotion V8) runs about $900 depending on where you purchase it. There are both cheaper and more expensive wheels from other manufacturers, though.

I want one now! This would be perfect for school, when we have to park like a mile away and walk. I'd rather ride this or an electric skateboard.

Kyle Niedermeier Hey most of these things weigh 40-50 lbs so electric skateboard seems the way to go. Can’t just carry it class to class.

The only thing i don't like about my wheel is the loss of exercise that i used to get by walking.
