Of every product we sell the electric unicycles are by far the hardest to learn how to ride. Join Mike as he explains how he rides and teaches others how to ride an electric unicycle for the first time.
When learning any new skill for the first time it's always important to set yourself up for success as much as possible. With this video we try and give you tips to do just that. Some people will be able to naturally pick up how to ride easily, while others will have to put in many practice sessions to be able to get it. You will probably not know which category you will fall into so set yourself up for success, because if you don't find any success and only failure it will be much harder to keep practicing and ultimately enjoying your new electric unicycle.
At Ride the Glide we started out as a Segway tour company and have gradually expanded to now encompass product sales including electric unicycles. We have a extensive knowledge of teaching many different types of people how to ride self balancing technology, everything from Segways to hover boards and electric unicycles. We are more then happy to share this knowledge and give help to anyone who is struggling learning how to ride their new electric unicycle.

    Hi Mick, I'm glad you found this helpful! We started out with Segway tours before we got into the electric unicycles and learning properly how to go slow and stay safe is our number one priority. If all you do is practice going straight especially fast you're much more likely to end up getting seriously injured. EUs are fun and we want to do our best that people learn to ride safely so that they can have the most fun possible!

    Ride the Glide That’s smart. I sold my Segway i2. When I first got it I was horrified. A neighbor pushed me past my comfort zone and I became a pro. I miss it but EUCs remind me of it. I am brand new and a bit frustrated but I believe I’ll learn. I also don’t desire to zoom around fast on a wheel. I just want to get around safely and be able to take it indoors wherever I go. So I look forward to getting the hang of my first wheel (Solowheel V8/Glide 3). I may end up paying someone in NY for lessons though.

    Hi Michael. I am also from Victoria but teaching in Seoul, Korea. I had seen a young guy ride ride this around everywhere last year, mainly around Hillside and Downtown. He sure loves his air wheel. I am considering buying one here soon. The only thing I would worry is about the battery because myself at 222lb because I'm a bodybuilder. If the battery would give me more than 6 months or so. I had watched another video of a another man who's 180lb and said from using his a few days a week, his battery lasted 2 years. But I plan to buy extra batteries along with the air wheel. Thanks for your video tip and if any other interesting gadget comes out. Will hope to learn something else. Cheers back home

    Hi Zeik, nice to see a fellow Victorian on the thread even if you are currently in Korea. Yes there are definitely a few different wheel running around town which is great to see. The longevity of the battery really won't be affected at all by your weight, it just might be you won't get as far on a single charge. The battery life will be affected by the depth of the charge (lighter charges will result in a longer battery life then fuller/deeper charges) as well as storage conditions (when not in use) and conditions while riding (temperature). There is also a local e-wheel club starting up in town that you should look into when you do get back to Victoria. Best of luck!

    Day 2. I can hop on but can’t yet get the balance in my feet. So I stay up for a couple of seconds, then tip over and bail. Fortunately I am not in a rush. I know some brag about learning it in an hour, etc. I just want to learn by summer. I’m on my way b/c day 2 and I can get on without holding anything. So thanks for this and I wish you were in NYC to help me. 😁

    That's the spirit Lillian! It's not all about how quickly you can do something and always remember that your journey is your own and not to compare yourself to others. If you aren't already doing so definitely find someone who can walk beside you that you can use to help keep your balance while you practice. In the beginning stages this is really helpful so you can learn to balance. If you stick to it you'll get there, you totally have the right attitude for it. NYC is a little far from us but we'd come out if we could!

    What if you had a metal tube and put a board on top that was approximately the same size as the foot plates and tried balancing on that before stepping onto this machine would that improve the learning time to ride this? Obviously put a stopper each side of the tube so the board doesn't roll side to side on the tube. But wouldn't that get you learning how to balance on an edge so to speak?

  • @RideTheGlide

    @RideTheGlide

    5 жыл бұрын

    That could potentially be helpful (also using any balancing device to improve core strength and overall balance) but won't give you the same feeling as riding the wheel will as it doesn't have the ability to behave in the same fashion that the wheel does. It's also very personal, this may really help some people and others may find that it makes it harder. It really depends on the learner.

    I find balancing quite easy but usually sitting down, ie bicycle I had no stabilising wheels as a kid and no one showed me how to ride, some how and I don't really know how, I just got on a bike and off I went, I tipped over to one side once and the rest was history. However saying this, I started off on a tricycle and would often end up on two wheels, strange the things you remember from being a child isn't it? But when I tried to move from sitting down ie bicycle to roller skates, totally different thing, to this day my roller skating is at best painful from all the falling over. I don't really know why this is, but I have tried a few times to lean roller skating and failed, or should that be have been less successful, cos it wasn't a complete failure just painfully slow plus injuries. So I'm looking for anything that will make riding one of these more successful than roller skating. I thought of the idea of the board because I have been watching many riders of these things and their stance. I even considered hiking poles to work like a skier, but then I don't ski either so may not be of much use to me. I know the board and pipe won't be the same as the wheel but it may focus my balance and centre of gravity so I can shift my body in a way that will allow me to hold myself up on the wheel and realise much quicker when I'm about to lose my balance so I can jump off without getting injured.

  • @RideTheGlide

    Hi Tia, it sounds like you're talking about the pedals tilting backwards. Pedal tilt back is usually because of reaching the maximum speed. Or occasionally it can be because of an error. How fast are you going when that happens? The Ninebot S2 is not a very fast machine, so alright for learning at lower speeds but not for going fast. I would recommend to lean back and slow down when the pedals tilt back instead of just jumping off of it.

    Hi Hyde, there isn't a definition for what an electric unicycle is in the Motor Vehicle Act (across Canada) and due to the lack of a definition and them having a motor they would be deemed a motor vehicle (like a car) and not having the required safety features are technically not allowed to be ridden on roads, bicycle lanes or sidewalks. However with that being said in most cases most people don't encounter any issues with law or bylaw enforcement if they are riding safely and respectfully of others. And if no one ever gets out there and rides the laws will never be changed. This is the same for most electric powered rideables including Segways, Nova Scotia is the first and only province to make it legal to ride a Segway on sidewalks.

    Electric unicycles balance you forwards and backwards only. You are responsible for the side to side balance. So yes and no. Does that answer your question?

  • @60viking

    @60viking

    The wheel has a balance system like the segway had and its job is to stay under the rider. So if you lean forward it will speed up to get under you and if you lean back it will stop and back up. It just wants to get under you.

    vHelpful, thanks. Can anyone help me with a problem pls? I end up twisted somehow. Me: i can step on my MCM5 most times after 6 hours learning and did several cautious one mile runs after wobbly starts, yay. I often find myself slightly twisted which makes it hard work, i am a leftie and tend to end up very left side forward all the time and steer using left shin and my right leg does little. I have had moments of good balance but not sure how i did it. should i try to get more balanced or is this normal? Will i naturally get better over this in time? I suspect it may be my second foot not being mirrored correctly when i plant it, gotway pedals are like velcro and dificult to move. I notice some people seem to ride with no leg contact with the wheel at all, any comment on that?

  • @RideTheGlide

    @RideTheGlide

    4 жыл бұрын

    I know what you mean, it can be difficult to work out, especially when you're learning and the pedals are so grippy. I would recommend really sending some time and getting the step on right. Have a practice session only for getting on. I would recommend holding onto something so you don't have to worry so much about balance and get the muscle memory down. As for riding without leg contact I'm not sure how people do it, it would require a lot more balance on just your feet, hard to comment on it much as I don't ride that way. Best of luck with your learning, hold in there I know you'll get it!

    helmet is the least necessary when learning. wrist, knee, and elbow guard is the most important one. today i scrapped my knee, by the moment i didnt wear any protection, i fell. fml.

  • @RideTheGlide

    @RideTheGlide

    6 жыл бұрын

    I wouldn't necessarily agree with that. Scraps and scratches heal quite quickly but should you fall and crack your head on the cement? Not going to heal so fast. You may not ever hit your head wearing a helmet but why take the chance? But I do completely agree with wearing other protection, especially the higher speeds you start to go. After all going faster in the end equals falling harder. Stay safe out there!

    Ride the Glide u miss my point. he wear helmet but no pads. ur more likely to scrap than land on ur head when learning since the speed is hardly fast. but i agree full gear is the best since ull never know what hit u on road.

  • @RideTheGlide

    @RideTheGlide

    6 жыл бұрын

    I got your point. You're definitely more likely to land on your hands or knees then your head when learning or in general. However my counter argument is that scrapes, while they hurt heal quickly. Should people wear protective gear to prevent this? Absolutely. But many will and do take the risk, but the consequences if they do are usually not extreme. But in the off chance you do hit fall and hit your head it doesn't take much to sustain serious, damage. Which can be prevented by wearing a properly fitted helmet (which in our neck of the woods is actually a law for bicycle riders same as wearing a seat belt in a car). So in my opinion a helmet is non-negotiable, and aside from that people should gear up as much as they feel they should (read as little as they are willing to get hurt). The more they do the more it will protect them.
