Tips to book BUDGET Antarctica

Is it possible to visit Antarctica on a budget? As a digital nomad and full-time traveller I work on finding the cheapest possible ways to travel. In today's slightly different video I break down how I got a great last minute deal to the Antarctic and what isn't included in the cost as part of my budget travel tips. This isn't a sponsored video or anything, just wanted to share the information. It's also a bit of a different video for me, just talking to camera so had to try some new stuff out :)
The company I used is Freestyle Adventure Travel ( watched this video 17 times and never caught that mistake!) and their link is here: freestyleadventuretravel.com/

    Hello Linda, You are right, cost to go Antártica are huge any way, but there is an opción maybe you don,t know yet. There is a possibility, to fly from Punta Arenas, Chile to the Antártica península avoing the Drake pass ( often very shaking and anoid) . There you pick for about 5 days on a little ship, ( very convinian ), to the most interesting part of Antártica shore. Finally You take the fly an return to P. Arenas. All about from around US 5000. More information you can find at the net. Sorry about My English..!!

    I'm going in March. I booked 15 months in advance and got a shared cabin to keep costs low(er). I also added several days in Argentina, Uruguay and Chile on the way down and my total for the entire 3 weeks will be around $15k. Another cost not mentioned in the video is gear. Not everybody has the kind of cold weather gear needed for this trip so you either have to rent or buy it. Because of covid, my cruise company consolidated ships and I got bumped to an itinerary that's 2 days longer and goes deeper into the Antarctic circle. On top of that, I got a free upgrade to a suite that would have cost $25k if I had booked it originally. In the end, I know it will be worth every penny.

    @@gordongraham7 that’s so cool! Im going on a cruise to the Bahamas in may, I definitely wanna save up for Antarctica though, looks very neat? You run into any Leopard Seals? How’s the wildlife out there, they bothered by humans at all? Do they bother you?

  • @gordongraham7

    @@christianrichardson8956 we saw several leopard seals. Though I didn't see it, several saw two leopard seals hunt and catch penguins, including a dive team who saw the whole thing from underwater. The wildlife was great, but I would recommend not going in March. By now, a lot of the penguins were already out at sea so we didn't see as many as I expected. Penguins weren't bothered by us at all. Some of the fur seals would get a bit upset if you got too close, but most of the other seals didn't care at all. Lots of birds. We saw over 200 fin whales and many humpbacks. We also saw several orca pods, including one that was hunting penguins and another pod that was only a few feet away from our zodiac. It's definitely worth saving up to go!

    Great video about a trip I’ve been looking at seriously taking for quite a while. I’ve done a lot of research regarding the ship size & my understanding is that once your in Antarctica being on a smaller ship will mean not only will you be able to make more landings but being on a smaller ship will allow you to enter areas that the bigger cruise ships aren’t allowed to & because the smaller ships lack some of the amenities that larger ships have like entertainment etc can also be cheaper. But the big drawback of a smaller ship is the Drake Passage which looks naughty! Crossing that looks like hell on earth if you’re on a small ship & spending £10,000 on a holiday only to reach your destination smelling of your own vomit & excrement after crossing a naughty Drake Passage is currently holding me back to be honest.

  • @lifebylinda

    @lifebylinda

    3 жыл бұрын

    Thanks and yea it's probably one of the drawbacks but there are quite a few options where you fly in as well, which means skipping the drake passage for at least one leg of the journey. When I went we actually also got really lucky and got the 'drake lake' so the crossing was smooth.

  • @SuperFucdat

    @@lifebylinda That might be a better option, though all we have to do now is wait for someone to come up with a vaccine for this Coronavirus! Following recent developments in Spain & Denmark culling ALL of the mink in their mink farms due to finding out that the mink had caught a strain of the virus & had passed it on to the workers would find it strange if cruises were allowed to travel to Antarctica. Not because of the chances of a human catching it off an animal, but in case one of the visitors gave it to a species of animal that could house the virus like the mink in Spain & Denmark can do, that could get proper naughty because some of the species in Antarctica migrate! Sorry for the long email & thanks for your reply. Mark🇬🇧

    I would say from my experience there are good chances since there are usually a few options coming up each week. The more flexible you are the better obviously. However, I am not sure how covid-19 might have affected the amount of ships sailing/ tours operating. I would recommend getting in touch with the con pool any I used maybe a month or two in advance and stay on top of the offers and what's available. Hope that helps, and enjoy your trip!

One thing I just learned about within past 3 wks as I recently made a deposit for my booking was travel insurance.
