The part about bad preceptors is SOO true. I had a horrible preceptor in the SICU who just made me feel like I couldn’t keep up. And I was a straight A student. She was one of those “I’ll do it myself” teachers, and I just thought who in the heck made you a preceptor??! How am I supposed to learn if you keep doing everything?? Anyway, I wish I had known back then that I could’ve requested someone else. Ended up quitting that program and applied to another program to get ICU trained. I have now been an ICU nurse for six years and I love it. Great video and great information!

I had the same experience. I had a horrific preceptor. After we got report, she was always on her phone. I never spoke up... now I am stuck off orientation feeling the incompetence.

I switched health systems and I have gained more confidence where I am not afraid to approach Residents Mid-level providers, Attendings and my fellow co-workers. Thank you

@@registerednursing2472 lol ok . That would’ve been a little more helpful in the initial comment than focusing on the music being a distraction especially if you’re needing advice. And moving forward i would encourage to make sure that when you do have issues with your patients and on your unit, that when addressing the problem you bring a solution or suggestion also... they’ll be plenty of bells and whistles ringing off as you working on your unit that you’ll have to over come to figure out what best to do for your patients, nevertheless, I’ll take the music volume into consideration. Although I don’t think it was pretty distracting. Maybe you just really liked the song it’s “Ja Ara E” by Burna Boy 🙃🙂Thanks. the key points of this video were: Develop a Good SBAR- similarly for what I mentioned early about problems and resolutions Speak on We- meaning foster a sense of teamwork when you can, try not to pin fault on one specific Person, try not to take all the glory for yourself Ask many questions- be in sponge mode, don’t be afraid you Will look weak, questions help you get smarter on the unit Highlight your strengths- if your good at IVs off that time other nurses , etc. Be organized- be ready for rounds, this is a huge part of how the rest of your day will go on the unit. Ask questions, make recommendations. Don’t just be a body in the huddle. Set goals for yourself- you should always be look to achieve goals, but especially when you’re new, it helps build confidence Switch preceptors if needed- not everyone is a good fit for you and it’s ok to ask for a switch .... orientation isn’t a hazing time

@@theCRNADrip Well the only reason I mentioned the music was because it truly was distracting and made it hard to grasp what you were saying. It wasn't to be rude. I was just opening your eyes to it. You can listen or not..doesnt matter. Thanks for the tips. They were great tips and I'll keep that in mind. Im 1 1/5 months in as a cardiac ICU nurse and Im feeling more confident every day. I really love this area. I want to get trained in placing picc lines next on my floor so they are eventually looking at training me at it.
