I completely agree! I started out in icu and the nurses who switched from other units to icu agreed that their previous experience didnt prepare them for icu at all. Also, if you got hired into icu that means the management believes you can do it.

Man this made me feel so much better. I am in my med surg clinical in my BSN program and I hear this all the time. I can honestly say I would hate working the med surg floor and want to go to ICU.

Excellent explanation! As a nursing student graduating this semester, wanting to start in the NICU, I get told so many times that I need to start in med surg for that “foundation” 😒 but it’s exactly like you said, it’s much better to learn off the bat, instead of trying to break old habits. PLUS, if I know I don’t want to be a med surg nurse, then why even waste my time?! Ugh, I appreciate you so much for this explanation, literally every time someone tries to tell me not to start in NICU, I’m gonna show them this video!!

Thank you for explaining this. People kept pushing me to do med surg first, because I just graduated. But yes, each specialty will train you in order to fit that specific role.

Thank you for talking about this! I'm a new grad going into the ICU and I've heard this opinion (new grads should do med surg first) many times before and it's very discouraging! I hadn't considered that RNs who start in med surg have to retrain their brain when they get to the ICU. Thank you for this new perspective!

YES !! THANK YOU!! I have heard this myth so much. My nursing school pushes all of these myths down our throat and pushes the "med-surg first" agenda and it gets on my last nerve. I'm so glad that I've found this cuz you have stated all the feelings and thoughts I have about this topic. I don't think it has to be controversial. As you have stated it is a generational divide and some folks/cultures within certain hospitals are very resistant to change.

This was a great video and you spoke on many key points but, what about the preceptors in the ICU who purposely set you up for failure? You know, there’s a certain personality of an ICU nurse and I find that if you don’t have that coming in.. you create situations for yourself from the start ! Just my opinion.

Hello i have a question. Im becoming a CRNA but in Switzerland, and i want to move to the USA after i Finish my degree. Do you know if it gets accepted or if i have to be in residency for like a year or so? the NBCRNA also doesn't say anything about oversea CRNA's and im getting abit anxious since noone knows.

How about as ADN-RN new grad? I am working as LPN in med/surgical unit now. Should I continue work as an RN until I finished my BSN or should I just start to be icu RN. Oh 😒 I am ambiguous.

+smzrain I would say go for the ICU While you work on your BSN. IF you feel comfortable. Don’t rush anything
