In this video you will get some knowledge, and hopefully some entertainment. I talked with Chris about shooting a video and he was on board from the start. Knowing that Chris is passionate about what he does, I knew this video was going to come out well. Chris has been in the pool industry for years and particularly enjoys working on the pools foundation. Tile cleaning is Chris's most favorite work to do with pools. But do not let that fool you he does an awesome job at acid washing as well. Again, I hope that you enjoy this video and get some info out of it as well.
The steps
The steps needed to acid wash a pool are few, but very specific. Draining the pool is the first step. Chris dropped the drain in the pool the day before so that it would be ready for us on the day of the shoot. Chris explained that it is VERY important to set up the drain so that the water and acid are kicked into the sewer lines. There should be now water discharged onto the customer property. Putting it down the street is not ok either. Do this safely.
Your solution
Chris used a 75/25 split of acid and water. Meaning 75% of the solution mixed into one batch was acid and 25% is water. This is a heavy acid mixture, but the pool needed it. Chris explained that the acid needed to be higher in this pool because the calcium and staining on the pools foundation was heavy. Chris goes on to explain that in order to pull off a good acid wash, the solution must stay consistent through out the entire pool. He made sure of this by mixing his solution in multiple pails before he started.
The work
This is pretty basic but takes a good eye to make sure it comes out well. You want to start by pouring the acid solution starting at the top and letting it run down the wall of the pool. While the solution is on the wall you will want to scrub it into the surface of the pool. This is where you want to make sure you blend the foundation to avoid streaking. Wash the acid off after you are done scrubbing it in. Make sure not to leave this on the pool for very long. Complete this process around the entire pool until completed.

If you use white n brite from bio-dex it thickens the solution and allows it to cling to the walls longer. I use it on all mine as well as the stain off it helps pull out some of the metals. Haven't used a pressure washer first but I will give it a try on the next one. Thanks for the tips.

I’m curious to know about the process for safely draining the pool first. Specifically, do I have to pop the drain plugs from the floor or can I leave them in? Worried about the hydrostatic pressure...but...how do I know if that’s really a risk factor for my pool? Thank you!

At what point do you decide it needs an acid wash vs a chlorine wash, the only issue I with what they were doing was they has no eye protection on, dealing with concentrations and quantities of Acid like that is sooooo dangerous even if a small splash gets in your eyes.

@@tobs9676 absolutely!! Muratic acid is diluted hydrochloric. Just if your gonna use a more stronger hydrochloric concentration make sure it is diluted and that it is not left on too long without rinsing. And if your surface is older than 6 or 7 years. I would recommended just resurfacing
