Nice video - Thanks. I was looking for a stainless carpet tack strip for my Southwest Native American rug. A very nice carpet that deserves respect and care. I think your clamp solution hit the spot. Thanks

Its there a concern about using nails when the possibility of high humitidy would cause potential of nails rusting causing damage to a high dollar silk rug?

Hi, Virtually all Persian rugs that are framed are either nailed or stapled to wooden frames and I have never seen their being any issues with them. As I have mentioned in the videos, if you go to any Persian home, restaurant, grocery or rug store, you will see framed rugs and they are virtually always nailed to the frames. If you look at my other videos, you will see several others where buyers used creative ways to display their silk rugs without the use of nails and you may like some of the ideas as I personally don't advice clients to frame pure silk rugs. Framing regular Persian rugs is fine, but when it comes to pure silk rugs, I advise hanging them without frames or nails and there are several examples in my videos. Hope this helps...

For the Tabriz in the frame, it would be much better to use four screwed on wooden strips around the outside of the rear of the frame so that they clamp down on the perimeter of the fabric to hold it in place. That way there will be no risk of damaging the carpet fibres by piercing the loom threads with nails and the weight of the carpet will be more evenly spread, also. But it would have also been good to see an alternative hanging method for the silks, to retain a view of the tassel ends.

Hi, Thanks for your input and in response to you and questions from others, I just added a second video in which I showcase a silk rug that is displayed in a case free of nails and where the fringes are showing. I think you are going to like seeing this method... kzread.info/dash/bejne/Zp6F3NWkds6ug5M.html

Do those clamps have ridges or teeth? Or are they just smooth inside? I live in Europe and am looking for something similar to hang some of my rugs. Thanks!

Depending on the size, type and weight of the rug, you may find suitable clamps in hardware stores or in check out Amazon. I recently purchased curtain clips for a client who hang up a silk Hereke rug and it worked great for him. Some clamps have teeth while other have a tight grip. Ours have teeth in them and they are designed for rugs to be hang on walls and we bought them years ago from a wholesaler. Not sure if they are still in business. Hope this helps...

@@mprugs Thank you, that is helpful. I was worried the ones with teeth marketed to hang rugs might damage them. Cheers!

In the small framed rug, the nails were hammered in from behind (into the wooden frame visible from the front). Was the huge world map rug also framed? If not, which way did the nails entered the rug? Do you have a video of an unframed large rug nailed to the wall?

Hi, I hang the world-map rug for years in my home office and I used small nails about 2 feet apart around the entire rug. Simply with the help of others, I positioned the rug where I wanted it, leveled it and started out in the top center. By placing a few nails along the sides and bottom, the weight is evenly distributed and will not cause damage by stretching the holes. This is the same method that is used in framed rugs and the main difference is that the nails enter the rugs from the back in framed rugs and the front in hang rugs without a frame. I don't have any videos of large rugs being hang on walls with nails at the moment, but will add one when I'm back home in the US and many of my relatives there have larger rugs nailed to walls...

My small Isfahan is hung using clamps on the pile. I assume it will not damage the rug for long term hanging. I was too worried to clamp it on the kilim. Mike did I make a good decision?

One of my clients did the same with their silk rugs and it could be alright as long as the clamps are not too tight (I assume). I also added a video with a fine framed rug that is enclosed in glass. You may want to see check that out.

Oh I forgot to mention the pile is kork wool. The clamps are tight enough to hold it. Can’t really tell how tight is too tight. I’d consider the frame case if it was an all silk piece. Can’t wait for more videos!

Confused...Why would you put a nail, no matter how thin, through a carpet that has been meticulously hand-knotted -- the definition of a "Persian" rug? It's like hanging up a valuable painting by nailing it to the wall through the canvas. Also, how does the self-designed rug and the very western animal scene qualify as a "Persian" rug since they are not "Persian" designs. The knotting technique?

Most Persian rugs that are framed are attached to the wooden frame by nails and/or staples similar to most paintings. Have a genuine handmade Tabriz rug depicting the presidential debate between Kennedy and Johnson and never had anyone suggesting that it is not a Persian rug. Also, in the past we have had several clients who had custom Persian rugs made with portraits of themselves and/or their spouses and all of them that were framed were nailed to the back of the frames and yes, the rugs were genuine Persian rugs... Design does not effect type...
