Yup couldnt agree more, unless you seat with concrete or steel hammer your axes aint tight

I find even when seated with a steel hammer knocking it on the concrete will often jump it down a little more yet.

Good work! I use glue and no metal wedge. I find the glue also helps “lube” the wedge into the bottom of the kerf. If anybody has a hate for glue it’s because they think they can’t rehaft a handle, but an oscillating multi tool with a plunge cut blade can still open one up in a way it can be cleaned up and reused. Basically just cutting a new kerf into the old wedge.

That makes sense. I’ve never tried that, but can’t see why it wouldn’t work. But the truth is, when you have to remove a handle, it’s probably time to change it anyway. Thanks for watching, brother.

The HYYYTESSSSST! AWESOME! So glad to see it hung on the Basque handle , I've wondered about that combo for years. Good job on your wedge shaping and hang angle, tassies can be a pain in that regard, I tend to be fussy about keeping them fairly closed. That's gunna be a great underhand axe I reckon! Can't wait!👍👍

Me too. I was really considering putting it on a spotted gum, but something told me I had to try one on a basque racer. I used to fight with head-handle alignment too. Now I just tweak whatever it wants to do, unless it’s way off.

Excellent video Kevin !! I can’t wait to see this beautiful axe I’m use and man what a great handle for that head !! As far as the head being hung slightly open or closed it also doesn’t seem to make much of a difference in the axes performance from what I’ve found either. I have a few I’ve hung where the head wasn’t “perfect” while I do try to get the head alignment with the palm swell at perfect as I can. With that said I do have one or two that stray from dead center but not past the swell and doesn’t really effect it much either. I would imagine in an extreme example maybe. Great job on the hang as well I couldn’t agree more spending a little more time on the prep work and fitment and you’ll be sure to have a secure hang, no sense in rushing 👍 great job man !! Looking forward to the next one !!

That’s gonna be a great chopper! I’m surprised you were able to acquire those basque racing handles - and some decent ones at that. Really cool to see on the Australian equivalent of the basques. Nice hat and wooden bopper. Might have to make myself one of those. Looks like it does a great job getting the wedge seated. I’m surprised to see you gluing the wedge in. I haven’t had a good experience doing so. I’ve had to scrap a handle or two that would have otherwise been worth saving. I suppose you’ve hung enough axes that you trust it’s gonna be right. You do really nice work.

I rarely glue, but I didn’t intend on putting a metal wedge in and the eye was already pretty tight, so I didn’t want the wedge to po out in use.

@@KevinsDisobedience I've had problems with wedges backing out. At Leslie Hill's advice I went back to glue but just one bead. With just a bit of glue, you can tap the wedge with a mallet or hammer and a narrow piece of wood or metal to break the bond if you need to get the wedge out. I've gotten it to work out the one time I had to rewedge a head hung like that. A small sample size, but proof concept.

Nice hang. Perfect contact at bottom of head. You sawed that off extremely proud. I usually let mine about 1/4-3/8 proud, yours looks about 5/8-11/16. Any handle looks good on that hytest. Great job.

I didn’t saw it off yet. That’s just where she ended up after I wedged it. The wedge went all the way down, which isn’t normal. I’ll cut it down some yet.

That's so funny you talk about hanging the head open or closed. I just hung an axe today and it was a little open and was wondering what other people thought about that theory. Nice hang! Beech on beech.... sounds like an AC/DC song to me!

I don’t think it matters much. Just let the head do what it wants to do unless you have specifics in mind. It actually take a lot to combat its “natural hang” if you have something specific in mind. Okay

  • @cosmicbilly

A tip that comes to my mind is to make sure your handle is dry before hanging it. I got some solid hangs on a couple of my axes i had just gotten new handles for. But a couple weeks after hanging and storing them next to my radiator, the wood shrunk and the heads became wobbly. None of my other axes had this issue, just the couple that were recently hung with new handles. Thankfully it was an easy fix and they are both solid again.

  • @KevinsDisobedience

    @KevinsDisobedience

Definitely, I keep all my handles next to a dehumidifier for at least a year before I hang them.

Awesome hang man! I look forward to the sharpening video. Quick question, do you like working at a bench that high? For all I know it was there when you moved in and you just didn’t want to mess with it. I’m just curious. People have told me my Roubo inspired workbench is too tall. It’s at 40”. I’m also 6,3 so it works well for me. Keep up the great work!!

Good question. So I built it for storage, not as a work bench, but I actually do like it that high for everything but the vise. In the future, I will probably make one that is stepped, with the vise on the lower section.

Yeah seemed like vise work would be hard since you usually want to be over the vise while working. Building an addition to the bench would be a great video!

Made me laugh when you said youbpulled a Billy Ray by going off the camera. Good hafting work right there where did you pick up the Basque handle I've been looking on line also just bought 3 tasmanians and was wondering if you know where to get a blank for a handle from the wood Horizontal, Red Gum or Spotted Gum being the three I purchased individually from Australia and want to haft them to as close as I can get to their former glory. I ALSO AGREE WITH NO METAL CYLINDERS AND NO METAL WEDGES. IN MY OPINION I WOULD RATHER ASSUME REHAFTING THE AXE COMPLETELY, THEN HAVE THE CYLINDER OR LITTLE METAL WEDGE CAUSE THE HEAD TO ROCK.. IT IS ANNOYING AT VERY LEAST AND CAN BECOME A VERY POTENTIALLY DANGEROUS SITUATION ESPECIALLY WHEN YOU ARE SHARPENING YOUR AXES TO THE SHARPNESS OF A DOCTORS SCALPEL

  • @KevinsDisobedience

Gotta get the gum from Australia. I’ve got a couple, but I had to have a friend send them. Not aware of any retailers that stock them. I’m actually a fan of metal barrel wedges when an axe starts to wiggle a bit, but not need for one in a big eye such as this when you first hang it. But if (or when) it comes loose, you better believe I’ll try a barrel wedge before I have to rehang it.
