    Thanks Jason for a very rational approach to what seems like "magic" at firrst glance. I shoot Canon and for the price of their teleconverters it comes out looking like a major compromise. I am going to sell my 70-200 and get the 100-400 to get what I need for my photography. It's hard enough getting wildlife to sit still (without ACTUALLY shooting them) at f2.8, much less at increasingly slower speeds with the teleconverter. Just stick the 100-400 on and be done with it.

    Jason, Thanks for the information. I photograph Sierra Nevada Bighorn Sheep and use a Sony A7R2. There are no E mount lenses long enough. I adapted an A mount 70-400mm lens and just bought a 2X Sony teleconverter. I am hoping the camera can deal with this because the sheep don't cooperate when being photographed.

    thats brilliant jason jeas i rekon id have enough focal length thr at that 448mm max focal length,id be hoping to get surf shots from a clifrf and i would have thought between 300 and 400 shud be enough to get a half good shot,i was going to go for the 2.8 aperture lens so that shud still get me sharp shots at full zoom extension shouldnt it would you think,it will also be grt to use the lower zoom for other general photography also again thanks a million for the informative reply cheers.

    Jason, Thanks for the clarification. Thanks to your video, I've decided against buying the Nikon teleconverter for the 70-200 F 2.8. I mean, I already have a sigma 150-600, then why should I invest in this teleconverter. Well, the one reason I was thinking of was the hardship of carrying 2 lenses. But then, I already have it. If i'm going to lose 2 stops of light, I might as well use the Sigma 150-600. Thanks,

    Converters are really only handy in good light - not in low light. That is my take on it. I at times use the TC-20EIII 2x Nikon on my 70-200mm F4 and can shoot at F8 but it really needs F11 (400mm) and you need to watch your ISO depending on the light and maybe give it a bump up especially if the subject is not stationary. It's really about understanding the balance and trade-offs and if you know those and understand the limitations, then it is useful.

    I use my Sigma 1.4tc on my Sigma 150-600 Sport f5-f6.3 successfully with both my 7DII and 5DIII picking up AF quickly across the range and giving sharper images than a crop would. However, it does require good light and I can’t guarantee being able to use it every day and it’s really important to fine tune your lens with the USB hub (or micro adjustments in camera as is the case with my 5DIII which are inferior) before even considering using it. Any front or rear focusing is phenomenally exaggerated, as are any other issues. I don’t even try to use my 2x tc on this lens and camera, even if you could use AF with it, which you definitely can’t, you lose far too much light even on a good day. The Sigma won’t work on all lenses because of the protruding front optic same as Nikon.

    You're effectively getting a 35-70mm f3.5 lens out of that, with possible image degradation due to the teleconverter even if you can find a compatible one. Given the sheer size and weight of the lens you're starting with, it may be easier and possibly cheaper to buy a lens covering the 35-70mm range, which will be much smaller, lighter and handier. I'm putting this up for those who are considering doing the same thing. I hope you have not already found this out to your detriment.

    What about "Plan C = Crop"? The discussion of teleconverters (Plan A) vs. very long lenses (Plan B) often overlooks Plan C: Crop. If you have in mind to put your image on a poster (or billboard!) you may need all the pixels you've got, but if you're heading for 4x6 or even 8x10, then a fraction of your sensor's pixels may be plenty. (Example: 300 dpi x 6" = 1800 dpi, cf. 5600 pixels on Canon 5D Mark II's long axis), so 1/9 of the sensor area might produce an excellent 4x6 print. Reactions?

  • @JasonOdellPhoto

    @JasonOdellPhoto

    7 жыл бұрын

    Your camera has no effect on the maximum aperture of your lens. Your 300/2.8 will operate at f/2.8, but on a D500, the angle of view is the same as a lens 1.5x longer (450mm). When you add a teleconverter, then your effective aperture is reduced. With a 2x TC, the lens becomes effectively a 600mm f/5.6 lens. On the D500, the angle of view is reduced by the crop factor of 1.5x, so it would be like using a 900mm f/5.6 lens.

    Adding a 1.4x TC to a 200mm lens gives you 200 x 1.4 = 280mm. On a Canon crop-sensor camera, the angle of view is effectively the focal length times 1.6. So, 280 x 1.6 = 448mm effective FL.

    Thanks for your review mate! I have one big doubt. I have a cropped sensor body and I like to shoot wildlife. I brought a Sigma 70-200 f2.8 for that reason, and as far as I could learn, this Sigman represents me a 112-320mm with an F4,5... (I recently learned that we should not multiply only the focal lenght but also the Apperture for the Crop Factor (in my case 1.6). So, making a long story short, if I add a teleconverter to this Sigma, lossing 2 stops will it represent me a total apperture of 8,6?! If so, I think a teleconverter to a crop sensor is not worth at all... Can you confirm if my calculations were correct? (The teleconverter I would buy was from Sigma and it is compatible with the lenses I brought). Thanks for your feedback, Cheers

    I agree with Vincent but not entirely. Remember you are using a full frame lens on a crop sensor camera so the pixel pitch is better than using that same lens on a full frame camera for wild life photography. I don't do wild life photography but I do from time to time play around with my Sigma 2x converter on my crop sigma 50-150 f2.8. I was able to capture the attached picture. I don't remember if I used any exposure compensation in my camera for this shot but I did at .6 exposure in lightroom plus a couple other tweeks. And note this is crop sensor and crop lens which is not as good a set up as you have for wild life photography. I think, if possible, you should test it to see what you think or do a little more research into the issue consulting those that do wild life photography. www.flickr.com/photos/144987688@N06/shares/Vm077d

    @@StevenTorrey you might be able to get a 3rd party teleconverter to physically mount. You will be VERY DISAPPOINTED in the results. Your autofocus probably won't work, and the image quality will, quite frankly, SUCK. The best results for any teleconverter are when they're mounted to a sharp lens to begin with; usually fast primes, but also some of the faster, constant-aperture zooms.

    @@StevenTorrey teleconverters magnify any optical deficiencies in your lenses. As such, they work GREAT on the super-sharp (& expensive) telephotos (like the 300/2.8), but they really don't do well with consumer-grade glass. Combine that with the loss of AF, and you have a recipe for disappointment.

    For those who want cut to the chase: A teleconverter WILL NOT WORK well at all on any lens that has a maximum aperture of f/5.6 or slower, nor will it work on lenses that are wide to telephoto range, like a 28-300 or 18-200mm.

    Because they will physically not mount (Nikon) or will degrade the image quality to the point where you'll simply be disappointed.

    No. Nikon TCs ONLY mount on AFS primes and certain zooms, like the 70-200mm and 200-400mm. Nikon TCs will not mount on any Nikkor lens that isn't a constant f/4 or faster. You could try a 3rd party TC, but your results will suck.
