Hey everyone! In this tutorial we'll be looking at a few settings we can use in the Sky Atmosphere to totally change the look of a scene. We then take a look at how to correctly use the Exponential Heightfog in conjunction with the Sky Atmosphere.
This Applies to both UE4 and UE5.

1:30 - 1:57 wow, unbelievable how much unreal engine improved over the years. i remember back in school in 2005 we used to joke that future games would look like cinematics, now we have games looking like movies. just with the sun light this flat empty desert scene turns to reality.

Would really love it if you did a tutorial on lighting interiors in Unreal for film use. So not necessarily needing baked light or real-time lighting. I'm guessing you would just use ray-traced lighting right? Also, a general how to on setting up an Unreal project for a film would be great. I know your how to make your film look cinematic does touch on that a bit. Anyways really love what you're doing here! Your tutorials have been so well made and succinct😁

Great video, i was wondering if you could explain how to do a overcast scene right in ue5
I love the tips you gave us on here man! I will play with the settings and all. Just wondering, if you know how to make it so the directional light also becomes diffused with the fog? It seems to hit my geometry pretty hard still. (Only option I see is decreasing the intensity)
Thanks to you, I finally found it. THE CYBERPUNK SKIES!!!
The exponential fog how-to-use at the end is awesome! I got a question regarding the expo. volumetric fog (god rays) - I'm using a point light and can set the length of the god rays with the attenuation radius (your other tut on how to cheat this with two lights is so good!) Is there a way to "feather" the edge of that point light sphere? It's cutting out very hard right now. Thanks William 🙏

Love your videos as always, William. I really enjoy playing with the SkyAtmosphere because its effects really affect the mood of the environment as you showed. One very important thing that everyone should note is when using exponential height fog, make sure it sits on the landscape or mesh that is acting as the ground for your scene. The height settings will not work properly if you place the actor too high (very foggy) or too low (too little fog). Its good to keep this in mind when adjusting terrain location or you'll wonder why its too foggy or not working. Keep up the great work William.

No matter what I do, I have no fog. I set it up in the project settings, but when I put a Height Fog in the level, nothing happens. I'm using version 4.26.2.
@bruce21st
2 жыл бұрын
@@GBTC2011 I would check your Engine Scalability settings. Fog needs shadows to be no lower than High for it to work. If you're using solutions like Ultra Dynamic Sky or Hemisphere Skies, you'll need to make sure it or other plugins are not overriding these actors in some way. Otherwise you'll need to play with those settings. If you still have a problem, try to make it work on an empty test level before returning to your project to narrow down the cause of the misfunction.
@GBTC2011

@@bruce21st Thanks for your reply, I am using Ultra Dynamic Sky and it may be why I have issues. I will follow your advice and try a blank project.
@bruce21st

@@GBTC2011 I think I understand what your situation is. Float Curves in UDS are very tricky to work with because it encompasses a variety of settings, so I can understand why you want to use your own height fog. This makes the solution simple hopefully. In the UDS actor in your project, scroll down to a section called Component Selection & Mobility > then where it says Height Fog, select "Disable Completely" from the dropdown. You should be able to use your own separate height fog actor now.

If I got UE5 right now how would I also get that terrain too? Are there good free terrain options or will I have to make photorealistic stuff from scratch?
This is so helpful, but could you make a video of how to properly make a night scene?
Your Tuts are right on the point, Hero of UE, I got question, I am using 4.27 , should I move to 5, would it be safe?
@WilliamFaucher

If you're just having fun making cool scenes, UE5 is totally fine to use! If you're working in production, stick with 4.27 :)
Hey, fairly new to Unreal but found myself in a position in which I'm basically make a day/night/weather system (rain, clouds, mist, etc.). Your vids have been very helpful! I was just wondering if - when it comes to the exponential height fog - the sun going behind the horizon makes everything pitch black as it should *if it were the middle of the night*, but it does this immediately after this sun sets. When the sun is just beyond the horizon, everything would be a darker blue before being enveloped in the dark of night, and things would start to brighten up a little while before dawn. I know that a Sky Sphere can have painted textures that can take care of such things, but from what I've seen it feels like sky spheres are being phased out with the entrance of lumen, volumetric clouds, sky atmosphere, etc. In any case, I've struggled to get the sky sphere to play ball with everything else. Do you have any tips or advice for this? I'm going to have to redo stars as well which I might try with Niagara since I'm not sure how else to achieve it (if not using a sky sphere).
@WilliamFaucher
2 жыл бұрын
I'd recommend a plugin called "Ultra Dynamic Sky", the dynamic atmosphere system in UE4/UE5 doesn't really do night skies at all.
@Daniel-qt5ib
2 жыл бұрын
@@WilliamFaucher Thank you for your reply :) Ultra Dynamic Sky has been on my radar for a while. I may need to get it, even just to pick it apart and see how it works.
These videos are just superb - thanks very much! One niggling thing: the sun, the actual disc is always soft, glowing, in your tutorials, but when I set a sky up, all I get is a sharp white disc. I cannot find how to change this. The only way I have found is to increase the Mie Anistropy from default 0.8 to up around 0.95. But yours remains at 0.8. So it's not that.

I usually have exponential heightfog which will soften it up nicely! You can control the size of it with "source radius"

Houdini to Niagara
Hi! Very awesome tutorial, but i hame some strange bug (or i just did something wrong). So my models does not really react on directional light when it is under horizont (while sky atmosphere is black). Any ideas how i can fix this?
@WilliamFaucher
2 жыл бұрын
Hi! Well, that's because it's beneath the horizon. Imagine if you are standing outside at night, are you hit by sunlight? No. Same thing applies here. There is nothing to fix, the sunlight isn't in the sky. :)
So basically, if we want a Bladerunner'esque feel, jack up the mie settings ✔️ I wonder when they slipped it into UE because I don't remember that being there. Pretty awesome though!
Thanks for highlighting these. The fog irritated me to no end, it should be black as default, it would fit every scene
