Thanks for this video. This is a real-world problem that I've not seen discussed online in my limited time in the archery community. Just last weekend, one of my coaches was telling us of the extreme lengths he went to, to get a pair of shooting glasses. Which turned out to be a costly failure.

I spent more than 40 years as a competition target rifle shooter, up to international level. When I switched to archery, it amazed me that archers that needed glasses just shot in their normal ones, in the rifle world no competitive shooter would dream of using their normal glasses, even at club level glasses wearers use frames specifically designed for shooting, where the lenses can be moved so that when on aim you look square on through the centre of the lens. When I took up archery, I just used my rifle shooting glasses and avoided having to peer through the corner of the lens over my nose. One of the major makers of these frames even makes a set specifically for archery. In many ways archery, compared to target shooting is technologically backward.

“…avoided having to peer through the corner of the lens over my nose…” So how do you shoot? Do you not turn your head [at all]? Or perhaps you hyper-extend and turn your head so you’re face-on to the target… Having a real hard time picturing your body position (stance, shoulders, bow arm) and not having to look over the bridge of your nose. I wear glasses and shoot firearms (pistol, rifle, shotgun - scoped and not) as well. Body position, upper torso certainly, relative to your head is vastly different in all three from an archer’s.

I may not have explained clearly enough. The lenses are moveable on the frames, so my head is in the normal archery position, but the lens is positioned so that when you look past your nose at the sight or target you look through the optically perfect centre of the lens rather than through the top corner.@@rawr6306

There are archers who use Knobloch's or something similar but most of us are cheapskates

For all the four-eyes in the world, I thank you. I've been thinking about this very topic, including an offset center of focus and using a strap to hold my glasses tight to my face. I have to dig out those old-school geek straps I used to wear.

BIG thanks... I'll need glasses .... "when I'm 64".... next month. These are really important point to give me the best opportunity.

After wearing glasses for 4.5 decades I really sympathize with your frustrations. I've never worn contacts. Just starting out in archery but never gave my glasses a second thought. I typically choose very thin frames.

...Aviators are a great style of glasses for shooting... they have a narrow bridge, and thin rims...

I shoot with glasses and have set purely for archery. I took my bow into the opticians and they put the focus area offset so the sight and target is visible.

Yeah, that is something recommended by Anthony Camera in his book Shooting the Stickbow. Actually, it is the focus of his discussion of glasses. I like the tips Jake added as well. The frame is pretty important too.

I'm putting an extra lens cleaning cloth in the quiver pocket.

My prescription is too strong to look through the corner of my glasses, so switched to contact lenses - GAME CHANGER! Right eye lens for aiming (distance lens), left eye for reading/writing (close lens). You easily get used to switching eyes:)

exactly my problem...John a) fogging in humid weather, the worst b) finger smudges c) sweat drops when looking down d) the hassle of removing the glasses to wipe my forehead and avoid sweat falling onthem. I tried contacts and hated it.. I just cant put them on or take them off. Something in my sense of preservation, makes me uncapable of touch my eyes, ridiculous but yeahh. I too have a pair of shooting glases with focus just at far distance... my multifocals are even worst to try and shoot, I rather shoot without them but then I see with more difficulty. I used to have one of those cords with adjustable clip so my glass would not slide down but i ended replacing with ruber hooks from amazon to slide along the legs and hook behaind my ears and keep my glases from moving to much. Surgery sound like the bes solution but then there is the cost and the fear of something not going well. Thanks for the Video Jake.

Indeed, I wear transition lenses, and the target is blurred and offset. This MUST be why I can't hit the gold/red/blue/big round straw thing! 🤣Plus, I've been wrenching my head round to try to look straighter to compensate. So I'll try contacts now. Thanks for the tips!

I can relate because i wear glasses to, but never had an issue with it. But at mo my left eye is messed up, apparently got fluid in the retina, which distorts things i.e a line for me has a bend in it, and reading is real hard. But its winter here so taking a break until i get it fixed. I can still shoot but its a challenge as most thing's are now with my sight. Ps you can get frameless glasses, and they would take all that away.

Hello Jake, thanks for this video. Can you also make one on shooting with both eyes open vs one eye? I am still experimenting with what works best for me but maybe there are some tips you can give.

If you’re using sights (that includes string-walking, “known” aim point, gap shooting etc.) then you are by definition only using one eye. And usually your dominant one. If you don’t know what eye that is definitely find out and if it’s the other eye than you normally sight with, try switching (if you can - easier said than done with archery though). If you shoot instinctively then you’re using both eyes as that gives you a better sight picture (bow position, arrow angle, target distance etc.) as you’re drawing such that you “know” [instinctively - though it’s learned regardless] when you’re on target and can release.

as a lifetime glasses user and decade or so with contacts, heres few notes: glasses are made more precisely to your eye than contacts, contacts are made in a more generic matter, and sometimes you might get nicely matching values, but often times you will not. this can make you see with new glasses better than with new contacts. Glasses wear really fast, even with coatings they will collect scratches so even if you are able to keep em clean (only use really soft materials) they will still fairly fast lose sharpness. Contacts also collect scratches, so daily or weekly lenses are better over monthly or yearly lenses. im not aware if there is some super expensive contacts that can match more precisely to anyones eye, maybe there is maybe not, been a while since i looked into em thank you for your content Jake ps: if u can have solid saddles instead of ones with wires, get em instead. they are really easy to bend

How do you mean glasses wear really fast? I sometimes still use a pair that's almost 6 years old, and still not a scratch on them. They are just HOYA lenses with the LongLife coating. Not really fancy or anything. Though I have to say that it seems almost all pairs of glasses in the US don't have an anti-reflective coating, so maybe the scratch resistance is also less good?

@@Basje313u cant actually see em scratches, every time you swipe em dry you scratch em, even with coatings

I took my bow to the eye doc and had them make me a pair that have the focal point where I look through when I'm shooting. They are worthless for anything else, including calling arrows, but I feel like they are the best investment I've made since I started getting old and my eyes went bad. It took me a while to find a doctor that would do it, but I finally found one open to the idea. I have sent several of my students to her to get their own pair.

@@JakeKaminskiArchery According to my doc, it's the lab they use that has to be willing to do the work. The one she uses "does it all the time for rifle shooters so archery should be the same". I looked for a long time to find her, but got no argument when I asked about it.

For getting your glasses in the same place, get one of those glasses retaining straps, and keep it tight.

Great tip about using the left side of frames for RH shooters. I have seen some archers shoot with colored lenses (yellow, blue, gold), I'm curious to learn what advantages one receives with those lenses.

Such helpful advice. I've always worn glasses and contacts and definitely prefer to shoot in contacts for all the reasons you outline. Where does the crud come from that covers glasses in 10 minutes?!! Just one thing. You mentioned corrective eye surgery and I must share advice from two separate opticians I've had. They both advised never to be tempted - too risky for both short term complications and lost-term degradation. I know it's great for some, but the severity of consequences if there are complications makes the risk too high for me.

Im right handed left eye dominant. I shoot in glasses. Never give it a thought... Ive always got a cleaning cloth with me. I wear thin metal frames and bifocals.

I'm sure my Varifocals magnify issues left to right. I also find the shape of the red changes much more than the gold. Pushing glasses up my nose is part of my shot cycle...

I'm a fairly new archer who (outside of archery) normally wears varifocals. I found when I was shooting, the varifocals made the target look like an abstract painting owing to my head position. I got a pair of 'distance only' glasses and the difference is immense. I can now see the target clearly. I have to look under them to nock an arrow but it's worth it to be able to see the target clearly.

I wear half frames, the style that has no frame on the lower portion. This helps a lot because there is not frame to try to look past.

I shoot Barebow with glasses but if I shoot my compound I have to take them off and use a verifier in my peep. In Barebow I anchor on my cheek bone and on expansion my nock clicks on the bottom of my lense which has turned into a sear for me. I was misinformed in December when I was starting to practice for my first indoor competition the Lancaster Classic that the clicking was illegal. I switched to bowhunter and when I showed up I was talking with a friend who was shooting barebow and he was talking with Fawn Girard and Joel Turner. They heard what I was told and said I was misinformed and when they found out I had my barebow with me they told me I could switch if I wanted. I did switch less than 30 minutes before I was supposed to be on the shooting line. I shot two ends in the practice range. The first 3 were horrible since I hadn't shot at all in almost 2 months and not much all fall because of hunting. The second end I shot a 10, 9, 8 and went to the line. I had Alex Melnik in my group and he gave me some tips and coaching. I shot the first 1/2 equaling my best ever practice round! the second half not so good. I shot the bottom target when i should have shot the top on my first arrow and fatigue became an issue but considering everything that happened I was very happy with my performance and the highlight of the weekend was one of the kids I coach won the Bare Bow division for his age group and finished 137 of the 267 entries in the adult class. All in all a great time! I made some new friends , saw some old ones and will be prepared for next year!

Jake I have a question. Do you think that glasses magnify the reflections of the sun to adjust the sight position?

I cannot use my glasses when shooting because the distortion near the bridge is just too much. It absolutely ruins consistency. Fortunately I am far sighted and can see well enough without glasses to nock my arrows and focus on the target.

As an "Old Fart" I appreciate this video. You can't shoot someone you can't see. I am now wearing bifocals and contacts won't work because of astigmatism; so now I shoot with glasses. Thanks.

Wondering if anyone has tried transitional lenses? Better or does it darken it too much. I typically shoot in contacts. But would consider glasses if my transitional lenses that I really don't like would work.

Hated contacts As a compounder, if you read the instructions on peep sights it tells you to wear eye protection, I've seen people hit by flying peeps (although not seriously)

I was hit in the eye by a peep site and it really was a scary situation. My eyeball looked brutal but luckily no damage. I still use a lens in my peep but I changed the style of peep altogether. I have a very difficult time shooting consistently with glasses on. I keep trying though. Maybe one day I’ll figure it out.

for me its just what I do, for a while I had an enormous amount of fun when my eyes got "middle aged" and I stopped being able to see the scope clearly, have had to start using a verifier to compensate, but I'm short sighted and always needed something for the target

Shortly after I started with archery I read an article about Dong-Hyun and decided to shoot without glasses. 😅

Have you tried prescription sunglasses which account for the parallax affect?

Tried lenses at the end of last season, but for me having also astigmatism they are really uncomfortable as every time you blink there's a change the contact rotates and you need a couple of seconds for it to go back to position. Also, one day I started to get my eyes really dry when focusing at the target and not blinking during aim so.... when back to glasses

i shoot with prescription photosensitive glasses. with them i also got free prescripition sunglasses lenses

Fantastic topic which will help me Jake i have mild cataracts in my dominate eye which i use to aim with i dont feel confident enough to use both at 20 metres to 70 metres the target is out of focus is it legal to have glasses that will make the target more clearer. I’ll go so far as to say of course it’s absolutely legal! That includes adhering to various association’s rules too. If you couldn’t correct your vision then every other archer competing who wears glasses couldn’t. That would make absolutely no sense.

Due to mosquitos and black flies getting under the glasses and feeding around my eyes I just take my glassesj off.

I wear progressive lens glasses. Could I get glasses that are calibrated for specific distances? Could I get glasses to wear when shooting at 20 yards and another set when shooting at 70m? Or is that forbidden in competition?

You would think that but actually no. When shooting indoor there sometimes is light above you. The glare obstructs everything. Or you are one of those people who always wears a cap, even indoors.

@@usernameONBEKENDthat [glare] has nothing to do with whether the glasses have frames or not. A thick frame will absolutely obstruct your view more that a thin (wire) frame or none at all.

@@rawr6306must have explained it incorrect, sorry for that (EN 2nd lang). Let me try again to clarify. Light gets into the glass from the top of the glass, that washes out everything. I used to stick tape on top of my glass when I had frameless glasses.
