Tips for More Realistic Planning | Decorate with Me

We often want to be more productive and get more things done, but realistic planning is important no matter how productive you are. As I'm decorating my planners for next week, I'm sharing some thoughts on the subject of making realistic to-do lists and schedules. I would love to hear your thoughts as well!

Thank you for sharing your thoughts on planning. I am also seeing that I have an idea of what I want to do, but I don't think about how I am going to do it when planning. I find if I plan and think of how I will do the task, then I can add extra tasks if needed.

It helps me a lot when I break down a task that is too big or too "vague" into smaller tasks. Thank you for watching!

I’m a Software Development Business Analyst and I always have my eye on the Acceptance Criteria of our requirements. Simply put, Acceptance Criteria is “how do you know when you’re done?” Defining this (even roughly) up front sets you up to be able to call it “done” even if it’s not perfect. You can then make another task to fix or refine or even re-do it to make it better, but with the experience of having done it once already.

That makes a lot of sense! And I like how you added that you can always make another task to fix, refine or re-do -- I try to do this when I have to write something. Having "write article" or something as a task seems daunting -- because it implies a finished, final version. When I "just" have to write the first draft and then edit that, it seems much more manageable.

I feel like this is a really important conversation to have, and I like the way you approach it! Being aware of how our mental health and our planners effect each other is really important for both productivity and quality of life, and I think it's important to remember that when thinking about how we're going to be planning going forwards.

Thank you so much! 😊 Planning is so much more than productivity, and leaving mental health and/or quality of life out of the equation doesn't feel sustainable.

Hi Ru! Realistic planning is something I've been thinking about and testing out strategies for years! (Maybe decades but then that makes me have to acknowledge my age...╯︿╰) Like what you and Eeveecat said -- the planner set-up and process of using it can have such a large impact on our personal judgement of how productive we are that day and our self-esteem. I totally agree with not overloading the to-do list and knowing when the planning just needs to be quick and dirty, so you can get to the doing! I've used lots of planning methods over the years (decades...) and now have a system that works really well for me! :) Its foundation is in David Allen's Getting Things Done methodology and then I do other things to help with regulating my emotions/keeping motivated when tackling large nebulous tasks where I often don't make as much progress as I plan for... Love the cafe stickers and blue washi tape theme!! It's so relaxing~

Thank you for your comment! I'm curious to see how I approach planning in maybe 10 years, because experience and trying different methods is how we grow and learn what works for us -- and I'm glad you have a system that works well for you!

so this has also been something on my mind lately. I've been having to juggle many different roles that require me to be in opposite headspaces and often time, when I'm not planning realistically, I feel deflated and unproductive. learning from myself, my habits, how my days play out realistically --- trying to take all those things into account as I plan has been a goal of mine and something I'm working towards. thanks for sharing some of those tips, ru! definitely resonated

Aah thank you so much! 😊 And I'm glad the video resonated with you. Juggling different roles is hard! I'm glad to hear you're not just trying to push harder but learning from how things go, what works and what doesn't -- it helps us grow 🌱
