I run my multi effect/modeller type unit to suit my particular guitar and playing styles via a fairly non conventional means, I don't require a bunch of tonal options as such because of my performance repertoire. I've used a variety of conventional amps for years previously for live work and recording purposes etc, I like some of the more modern variations on some units in 24, but I am already pulling killer tones that I'm often asked how I'm achieving such via my stuff, I've got great ears and I know how to get great tone out of most conventional amps, I use my current set up because it's simple better in several ways for live use and recording purposes than most amps, I wouldn't dare use it unless it was actually better overall. You are correct in that it's a bit of a no-brainer to connect any modeller-multi unit to a conventional guitar amp, it's like have a colour t.v. but turning the colour off to watch it in boring black and white quite frankly.

If you use a guitar cab, you have to turn off speaker IRs, which to me is crazy. I use a Fractal FM9 which is the holy grail and have 2000 IRs for different speaker cabs. You are stuck with one cab and one sound on your speakers. You don't want to run a real world amp and not use the IR for the matching cab for that model. I use the FM9 into two Katana Artist which are full range. I do global eq 80hz and below cut and also a cut above 16000hz. My tone is top notch and stereo. If you are a minimalist and only want to use a vintage 30 and happy with that one cab, it is ok. I play a wide range of material and need different amps with the proper matching cab for the song.

Best bet is a good quality power amp (non colouring) You get some air movement and with a bit of tweaking it will sound as good as a real amp but tameable👍🏼 Modellers in experienced hands are the bedroom/recording guitarists best friend ☺️ Live in a full mix is a completely different bag tho

So, if you use an HX Stomp into the power amp in of your guitar amp (with IRs / cab sims off), do the amp models of the HX still sound reasonably decent?

So the PowerStage 200 is completely clean and transparent so the physical cabinet is the only thing coloring the tone. It sounds great

Best sound I have gotten out of an amp modeler is the HX Stomp through a Headrush 112 FRFR with the global settings to what Rhett Schull recommends.

Recently got an $80 pawn shop special Line 6 Spider 112 40w combo with tube amp section made by Bogner came with a vintage 30 I figured I could just use my modeler effects pedal turn off the cab modeling run it into the Poweramp section of the amplifier bypassing the preamp. I figured I'd mess around with it and see what I could Do with itPossibly Run it into a 4x12.

Hi Ryan, very helpful info! In your experience, which clean amp sounds (like Fender) sound most realistic through a set up like you recommend, a SD200 and in my case, an EV 1-12, a profiler like Tonex or a modeller like Line 6? Thanx!

Super cool question. So here’s the thing, I’ve never played a tonex. I need to change that. I own both a Line6 and a Fractal. In my opinion the fractal is the best. But I use the Line6 more often live. Just because it’s small and sounds great. I think the fender cleans sound great. I need to play a tonnex in order to give a fair assessment

Worth putting an analog pedal before plugins?

As long as it’s not clipping the audio interface. You may have seen a few videos lately talking about how we’ve been using plugins wrong from Rhett Shull and John Nathan Cordy about needing to drop the input signal.

TL;DR (watch): 1. Setting Global EQ to cut off anything below 65Hz and anything above 6500-7000Hz. 2. Set up dual cabinets and duel microphones (also experiment with mic placement) to capture the tones that sound best to you. 3. Download other's presets/IRs. 4. Run your modeller through an actual cabinet (via something like a seymour duncan powerstage power-amp) to give it a more authentic "guitar amp" tone as opposed to a "mic'd amp" tone. 5. Put a drive/distortion/boost pedal before your modeller.

Fair. But it still gets the sounds of a full suite of different amp tones instead of just the one
