    Hello Dr. Ryan. Thank you for everything you do and know that your efforts don't go to waste. I graduated dental school using your videos and knowledge and I am deeply grateful. I would just like to get your feedback on something. I am an American but I studied dentistry abroad. I read about the AEGD and I was wondering if it's a good alternative to the advanced standing program. What do you think?

  • @mentaldental

    @mentaldental

    Жыл бұрын

    You're very welcome! In this specific case, an AEGD may be a very nice option! This would allow you to get a certificate within 12 months (sometimes with an optional additional year). However, you should be very careful about where you will be licensed as a result of completing the program. If you are going to forgo attending a CODA-accredited dental school for a DDS/DMD degree here in the US, you may be limited in terms of your practice options, so do your research and ask these questions directly to the school you are considering applying to for an AEGD.

    Hi dr.Ryan. I want to thank you sincerely for your KZread channel. When I was preparing for the INBDE, the only two things I sticked to was your videos and Bootcamp. Now I passed my exam in one attempt last October. I actually had watched your videos for at least 5 times 😂. I found your videos very practical even for a foreign trained dentist. So I have recommended your channel and Bootcamp to many of my friends who are also preparing for the exam. Now I am preparing for the application. One question that bothered me for a long time is that how much money actually should we prepare on average for an 2-year international dentist program in advance? Are we qualified to be able to apply for student loans as international students? Will dental school require us to provide a bank account with certain amount of deposit when we are applying? If so, how much money should we have in the account 😂. It will be very grateful if you could answer my questions. Hope you all the best!!!

    You’ll need at least a bachelor’s degree to apply to dental school in the US, so no. The only exception is if you apply to an “accelerated” program where you get accepted to a college and dental school simultaneously. Then, you would go to college for 3 years and directly after that go to dental school for 4 years.

    I answered a similar comment earlier! I’ll copy and paste my response for you here. You have two main options. The "ideal" way would be to follow exactly what I outline in this video. Complete an Advanced Standing Program here in the U.S. to get your DDS or DMD degree and THEN apply to an orthodontic specialty program. The "shortcut" way is to skip the 2-3 years of dental school and apply directly to an orthodontic residency program as an international dentist, which has several drawbacks. First, you are severely limiting the amount of programs you can apply to (since many require a DDS/DMD degree first) and your license to practice will be limited to only a few states. Residency will also be more challenging since you were not first educated in practicing dentistry in the U.S. Finally, most schools will not offer you a stipend for residency training if you take this route so you are forfeiting any potential income you could have earned while in residency. Hope that helps!

    If there is an on-campus employment opportunity at the school you are attending, then yes you can. Some schools may not have any available, so that is a good question to ask the school ahead of time. F1 students typically cannot work off-campus, at least during their first academic year.

    If you intend on joining this cycle of applicants, absolutely start your application now! CAAPID will process your application without the INBDE (and TOEFL) scores for now. Keep in mind that some programs will not review your application until those scores are reported.

    INBDE is necessary if you want to practice dentistry in the US! ADAT is optional (or sometimes required based on the program you are applying to). You can look at the CAAPID program directory to learn more of the details about each specific program.

    Hey legend, thank you for all the help. Just a quick question, im an international dental student and i still have one year to graduate here and earn my bachelor, but i plan to do my board exam already now. Can i take the exam now even before i finish my bachelor? Can i also apply for dental schools even though i havent graduated from my dental school yet, or will i have to get the bachelor degree first. Thank you doc❤

  • @mentaldental

    @mentaldental

    Жыл бұрын

    You’re welcome! To answer your first question, yes, you can definitely take your board exam now as long as you’ve learned most or all of the relevant material. I would wait for your bachelor degree, otherwise you will be applying as a dental student through AADSAS which may require additional steps like the DAT. I would wait to become a dentist, and then follow the steps I’ve outlined here through CAAPID.

And when is the best time (month)to apply for advanced standing programs if i wish not to have any delay and get straight into the program once i graduate?
