Tips for Hoses, Seals & Cores

Bryan shares some of his top tips for using hoses, seals, and cores for the best possible charging, recovery, and evacuation procedures.
In many cases, beginners often forget to connect the side of the hose with the core depressor to the Schrader core, which doesn't allow them to get a good vacuum or have enough pressure for charging and recovery. Many techs also don't know that you can adjust the depth of the core depressor on the hose by rotating it with a gasket remover tool or pulling it with needle-nose pliers.
Some built-in core depressors or removers have straight ridges, and others have angled ones (like threads). Both variations will typically work with rubber seals, but you may have to use different methods to adjust them. In this case, Bryan uses the gasket remover tool on the one with angled threads and needle-nose pliers on the one with straight ridges. Although core depressors are often built into tools, you can also use a separate core depressor in a T shape. You can rotate the end opposite the core to depress the core.
Some gasket remover tools, like the one in the video, come with multiple seals and a sharp, angled pick that allow you to replace the rubber seals easily. You simply use the pick to grab the rubber seal and wiggle it out. Then, you align the new seal and press it in. After that, you force the core depressor into place with the needle-nose pliers or the gasket remover tool. A core depressor that sticks too far out can cause losses through the hoses because it depresses the core before the seal is engaged, so you will need to make sure that the depth is sufficient. The core depressor should be in as far as possible so long as it's still able to depress the core.
A Core Max core can't be removed with a typical remover because it's threaded in place. However, they have a great amount of internal volume and are great for pulling a vacuum. You just have to use a core depressor instead of a remover when working with Core Max cores.

Very helpful! I was wondering why my charge hoses were leaking so badly when I was connecting to or disconnecting to the AC fittings on my pickup lately. I was loosing a lot of oil and refrigerant even with being quick to unscrew the hoses

I’ve used a pocket screwdriver with the tip bent in a vise to change my seals for years. Works great and you can’t beat the price.

Today I tried to replace a seal in one of my hoses and for tahe first time I couldnt get the dam thing to seat. Its on the manifold end and i must have destroyed 8 gaskets before I gave up. The problem is trying to get the round end to start in the copper circular end that maintains the gasket. After looking at the others on line it occured to me, the hassle was because the outer knurled sleeve wont slide down low like it does on the other end, where you can easily get this thing started. I started tao think there may be a tool for it, but from what I’ve seen, the yellow jacket tool is merely a pick which I already have several of. Maybe I could freeze it to attempt to shrink its diameter momentarily and slide it in??? The pocket is down deep below the threaded section.

Youre doing the job our lead techs should be doing, you have no idea (presumably) to be told how to do something, after youve already done it many times. In this field it seems like everyones trying to know something over the next guy for whatever reason…

As a technician for Scotsman Industries, I suggest to all who work on the refrigeration side of the machine to cut the core max off. Replace with a standard fitting with removable valve as the core depressor is not a vacuum rated device

Great video! Do you have a video of replacing the seal in the quick release core depressor you show at around 3:00? That's where mine is leaking. I can see the seal is not seated inside, but I can't get it seated and not sure how to disassemble (or reassemble) without ruining it. Thanks!
