Tips for Conference Presenting!
What makes a good conference talk? How can I prepare for my first time? What unexpected surprises should I expect?
This video is based on my time at the 50th Lunar and Planetary Science Conference in Houston in March, 2019. I had a wonderful time and presented my PhD research to an audience of around 200 fellow scientists. Here I've compiled some tips I made note of while observing which talks I liked best and which I found hard to follow, as well as from evaluating my own performance.

My name is Lucy Kissick, I’m a third year PhD student researching ancient Martian lakes at the University of Oxford, and the best advice I ever heard was from Spyro the Dragon, 1998: "Aim high in life but watch out for flying boxes".

Thank you for sharing your tips! short takeaways: making slides: - check dimension (4:3 or 16:9), stick to the theme, make sure color works in low contrast - keep thing simple, one point per slide, use minimal text - make every slide consistent, graphs should be distinctly differentiated speech part: - look at the audience: turn to the board only when you need to use a laser pointer or check clicker is working - don't overuse the laser pointer - don't fill the temptation to fill pauses - make sure talk loudly - introduction: how specialized your audience is, and skip unnecessary content - think about where you come into your story, why your work is new/ relevant/ important Q&A - don't end with a thank you slide - feel free to say "I don't know", "come and talk later"

Lucy, you're so so sweet. Just staring at your eyes all through, lol. Though you were fast, I got the whole point. I'm so sure your presentations are awesome. Also, I would have preferred if you had a video presentation/example showing the presentation tips 😁

Hi Lucy... Love your hair 😍. Thanks for the sharing, my debut is in october 2019. I'm starting on with my slides as I search through for presentation tips, and walla I found your awesome vid. Good luck to you and thanks again. (P. S. I am in 3rd year PhD too 🙏😁)

Thank you for the tips, next week will be my very first online conference.
Thanks. That was helpful.
Very nice video Lucy! Regarding the last slide. Many people dread the "Questions?" or "Thank for your attention" slides; some just put a black page in the presentation. What I like to do is end with a slide that makes it obvious that the presentation is over, even though it does not say it explicitly: almost always a slide with my contacts for non-academic presentations or a slide with citations for academic presentations will do the trick.
@ThePhDiaries

ah yes having your contacts is a great idea, so people can contact you and look you up after.
Thank you sooo much 🤩

Well done Lucy 👍

Hi Lucy! I am PhD student too, and I can understand how nerve racking presentations are. The problems we face are definitely with the slides and keeping them engaging. Could you please share your slide format or template if you don't mind?
Excellent 👍
Thanks for sharing Lucy, I can relate because the first time I had to present my work in front of the scientific community I was terrified.

I have a presentation in two days. I am stressed af 😐
First rule of a great presentation is always break the ice before starting. Know your material through and through. Treat your audience as if you are talking to one person and never take a cheat sheet.
Thank you!

Hi Dr. Lucy, I am a new subscriber. Just want to know where did you get the sound you put at the end of your every video? Is it your personal composition or an online clip? I would like to hear the full track. It really stuck to me from the first time I heard it. Appreciate the response! Your work is inspiring!
WOW
Have you done a video on how to present a paper on Zoom or for a webinar?
You sound like Hermione granger!! Thanks for the tips!!
Thank you very much mam
Which software you used for your presentation?
i have a presentation in a few days in a big Conference at Wits university
I had my first conference presentation yesterday, and am crying right now, I really fucked up, I didn't prepare well, I tried to learn by heart the script, then when I was presenting I forgot many lines, and as a result I stuttered any many words because my brain went blank, I think my presentation was the worst and I didn't eat anything all day, today am searching how to heal from this trauma and started to question my life choices, and whether I deserve to be in this place, this feeling sucks and I just can't forget about it
I would hire you just because of your voice 😚 very swift ...
Would you please mind to do it with English subtitles ...
