Tipping the scale -- unconscious barriers to community engagement | Brett Powell | TEDxChemungRiver

This talk was given at a local TEDx event, produced independently of the TED Conferences. Anyone who has struggled with the essence of a volunteer workforce will benefit from what Brett Powell describes as the four barriers. Understanding what prevents us from jumping into the volunteer pool may just help us be a better volunteer.
Brett M. Powell earned a Master of Science in Experimental Psychology at St. Joseph’s University in Philadelphia and works as a marketing consultant at Howell Liberatore & Associates in Elmira, New York. He enjoys thinking big, being creative, teaching at Corning Community College, volunteering on the Five Rivers Council Boy Scouts of America executive board, playing drums in the Ithaca band Not From Wisconsin, and being outdoors as an Eagle Scout in his native Finger Lakes Region. Personally, Brett’s favorite accomplishment was brokering Superball IX, a three-day music festival.
About TEDx, x = independently organized event In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized.* (*Subject to certain rules and regulations)

Great talk, Mr. Powell. To whom it may pertain: I graduated from a state college a few years back, but the journey to get there was not easy, and neither was graduate school. However, between my BA and MA, I had some free time. I decided to volunteer at a local middle school. At first I was anxious. Little kids running around, screaming, yelling. But one of the teachers in the class had identified a handful of students that were struggling; these students could not keep up with the rest of the class. "Can you help them?" he asked me. I hadn't reviewed the history, English, math or science topics that the students were learning, but I agreed to try. The results were astounding. The group of kids that I worked with were all different. A student from a neglected home, one which had Spanish as a first language, a boy who had difficulties concentrating, a girl who had difficulties asking for help. Whatever the limitation, I found each and every one of them could overcome and succeed in the lessons. I did vary my lesson plans, but if you are willing to try, you will find a way to make a person feel valued and self-empowered. All the students in the class wanted to be a part of my group by the end of the year. Imagine if every classroom in America had just one college student helping the teachers. Additional volunteer educators create an exponential potential in students across our country and world. There are no dumb students, but there is a student out there in need of your help. Sincerely, David
