Having met Tippi Hendren through her animal rescue charity, I had the privilege of having dinner with her and she is an extraordinarily intelligent woman committed to animal rescue. Hedren has spent much of her time after "Marnie" creating a haven for large animals that were abused or abandoned. She is a stellar example of how someone who experienced abuse, yet rallied and became an activist for the humane treatment and rescue of large cat's (lion's, leopards, etc..,).

This woman has so much innate beauty - external internal, intelligence, class, breeding, natural elegance, integrity, character and strength - 100% CLASS ACT.

Her voice. There's something magically unique about it.

I read her autobiography and I have so much respect for her in how she regards Hitchcock. She was immensely grateful for being given the opportunity that she was and the training hitch gave her. She regarded him as a genius But she also disliked him immensely. She is gracious enough to appreciate hitchcock's talent and his helping the start of her career even after all that happened. This lady is a class act.

Also i cannot imagine anybody playing Marnie other than Tippi...must have watched that film over 100 times....she captures the characters complexity so perfectly....they don't make films like that anymore...pity Hitchcock let his perversions get in the way of his talent as a filmaker...second to none!. I had the great pleasure of being in Tippi Hedren's company a few times in the mid-90's and I was astonished by her grace and poise and straight-forwardness. A true beauty inside and out forever.

Why is there such negativity towards Ms Hedren for simply relaying her story. You can see she isn't fabricating, she is telling what happened, and anyone in the business will truly know this situation is SO typical. In other interviews/discussions Ms Hedren praises Hitchcock for his work etc...She is just telling her story and why shouldn't she, why shouldn't people know what he was like. It isn't really that surprising is it!!!???

She could've left at anytime. She knew Alfred liked her and she used that to her advantage. She didn't just reject him but, humiliated him, called him names and degraded him. Obsessed or not Imagine having someone that you really like do that to you and Imagine the heart break he must have went through. She even said "today if this happened I would be a very rich women" sounds like a women who has a total disconnect for other peoples feelings and is only thinking of there selfish agenda. I believe it was a horrible experience for both parties but, Alfred was just a way for her to make a name for herself instead of a human being with feelings.

Mark Strong Actually, Mr. Hitchcock threatened her with ruining her career as an actress. Which he did for a bit, she didn't find a proper job in some time, luckily, after some time she succeeded by herself. He basically had her career as a "hostage" Mr. Hitchcock may be the master of suspense, and an amazing director, but he wasn't a nice person. I mean, he threw big, living birds to her. I doubt that Mrs. Hedren came out unscratched. And if any of you are familiar with the filming industry, the birds probably weren't unharmed, either. So no, she couldn't have left anytime, she was threatened. And the person who ended up being humiliated was Mrs. Herden. Just think, how is Mr. Hitchock viewed by the general audience? A genius, the master of suspense. A God, if you're feeling dramatic. Horrible experience for Hitchock? Please, that movie became extremely famous, that's far from a horrible experience for him.

I love how her voice has not changed one bit. A great, unique voice....and a lovely actress. Loved you in Marnie!! And so respectful of him still in calling him "Mr. Hitchcock". I think it's important to point out that Tippi looks amazing, period. She is gorgeous without needing to add on "for her age" at the end of the compliment. I love how she presents herself.

It’s very interesting to me how often madness or cruelty goes hand in hand with artistic brilliance.

Such a formidable, sharp-witted person. All kudos to her for retaining her integrity through speaking out.

I met her two years ago, I got her autograph in my own copy of "How Hitchcock Filmed The Birds" book. She is still so hauntingly beautiful. A very nice woman! She does not like giving autographs but this is what pays her bills to live comfortably. She is very simply awesome and gracious. I did NOT ask her about Melanie.

Tippi Hedren & Joey Bishop stopped at An Lo Bridge North of Hue in Vietnam that we were guarding. They were traveling through a war zone in 1968 in a small convoy. They spent around 30 minutes visiting with us and Tippi gave me an autographed picture of herself which I treasure to this day. What a beautiful and brave lady I think she is.

This woman was so beautiful at the peak of her career. Almost indescribable. When you are the subject of someone's obsession and that person has money then nothing is beyond their grasp.

8:48 this part is chilling! poor woman! I truly believe every word she says when she tells this real-life account. such a wonderful and beautiful woman must have had tons of admirers and fans. all types too, the good, the bad, and the terrifying!

Glad she's made it to 90! Hope she lives even longer 🙏

This lady was so beautiful & a talented actress!

In the early 2000's, I was wine tasting with friends in Sonoma County (northern California), and we decided to head west to the Pacific Ocean. We stopped in Bodega Bay (location site of "The Birds") and lo and behold, Tippi Hedren was doing a book signing in the local restaurant. She was instantly recognizable. We also stopped at the school house which is shown in the film. At that time, it was a small museum devoted to "The Birds".

I also stopped by the “Tides Restaurant” that day and got Tipi’s autograph on one of her photos for my friend. He was very surprised when I came home with it! She was about 84 then, looked great and very intelligent lady! I think it was a 50th celebration (2016?-2017?) of filming, “The Birds.”

@@TheMartinick My encounter with Tippi Hedren was at least a decade earlier (2006?) so apparently she made repeat appearances. At that point, the school house bldg. was a museum. Sadly, that's no longer the case. Thanks for your reminiscence. P.S.: It's amazing that at least FIVE of Hitchcock's leading ladies are still alive:Tippi Hedren, Kim Novak, Eva Marie Saint, Julie Andrews, Vera Miles. Andrews is the youngest at 88. Miss Saint will be 100 on July 4.

Those eyes and facial were always so expressive. One of the most beautiful women alive. I was enamored of her even as a teenager back in the 1960s. And that doesn't come easily for me. But you couldn't forget Tippi. I didn't know about all the oppressive background. It sounds like a Hitchcock movie in itself! So sorry she had to deal with all of that. You know though, it is no wonder she was stared at. She turned many a head...and absolutely beautiful. Bless her for having influenced so many in such a positive manner. By the way, the musician/composer is about my favorite in the world of music, Bernard Hermann, and this movie had the most beautiful music!

Years ago, I had a friend named Kim. She helped Tippi train lions for the movie, Roar. She said Tippi was wonderful, but Melanie was a snotty B with an ITCH.

So glad she didn't stay under his thumb. She's a great role model. Never compromise your integrity. It's not easy.

Polanski isn't great, and his is more than a mere moral failing. Hitchcock may have acted unprofessional and been disloyal, but I doubt the dynamic between him and Hedren was as one dimensional as she portrays it. Women frequently get themselves into situations where they use their sexual appeal in exchange for something in return. If a crime was committed, press charges. Otherwise it just sounds like you're airing a dead man's laundry long after he has any way to reply.

She is so beautiful through all her life.

What a strong, beautiful, and professional lady. She's full of class and confidence, a real rarity in Hollywood (of ANY era)...I'm personally glad that she decided to get out of that situation for her own personal safety. I read in the comments that she doesn't look her age; On the contrary, I believe that she looks much older than her 82 years. It's her beauty and her personality that mischief and the fact that she remains sooo Tipi Heidren. She looks her age, she looks more than her age, but she looks it beautifully. And even gracefuly, I should say.

This was one of the first movies I saw at the theater as a kid. Scared the crap out of me.

I have heard that too but I also think he got on extremely well with Janet Leigh. She had said often that he was very generous with her & they got on well, go figure. Maybe Miss Leigh was one of the lucky ones. If the movie called Hitchcock starring Anthony Hopkins is based on fact this would be the case. I also thought Tippi was great in both movies she did for Hitch.

Many did. Just the "politics" of the industry, only back then if you made the deal you accepted it and didn't cry about the abuse that made you a star. Being a waitress or secretary with virtue didn't have the same 'ring' as starlet, it seems.

Born in 1968 I saw both Bonnie And Clyde and The Birds around age 6-7 around 1975, and Tippi, and especially Faye Dunaway in that first scene where she's dressing gave me my first Freudian chubby and pounded my little boy heart something big. Tippi was beautiful and still looks great here for her age, but Faye in B&C, WOW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

yeah i read it in an article some time ago. Hitchcock also only kept Tippi under contract because he lined her up for Mary Rose production. When that fell flat, he released her.

I love her! She’s so real!😘 Go, Tippy!

Tippi Hedern is a class act. She and Vera Miles had contracts with Hitchcock. Miles signed her contract in 56. For seven years. For seven films. She did “The Wrong Man.” She of course was supposed to do “vertigo” but became pregnant. Hitchcock of course cast her as Lila Crane in psycho. Miles ended her contract on the set of psycho. Miles to this day hasn’t talked about Hitchcock. She and Tippi. Could compare notes.

Always wondered if Alfred Hitchcock was a mad genius and what it would taken to create these movies that have stood the test of time.

I can relate to her story. And I love her pin!

I wish I could hug her.

I love Alfred Hitchcock movies and I love tippi herden. But even though I love Alfred Hitchcock movies and he’s probably one of my favourite directors what he did was really bad and no one has the right to do that.

This might sound mean, but Tipi has aged much better than her daughter. Shes still so beautiful.

Having seen 'The Birds' as a boy in my early teens, I thoroughly enjoyed it even though it scared the crap out of me. I have always held Tippi's acting ability and her flawless beauty in high regard, but having found out about Hitch's crush on her much later, I wish she had stated that "at least he didn't pull a Harvey Winestein on me", but the Me Too thing happened after this interview. Alfred Hitchcock is still a genius. His work can't be compared.

This goes on everyday and has in all times. My situation was with a brother-in-law. I went to my sister crying because guy grabbed me trying to force kissing. She said I miss understood, it was love of father for daughter. I disappeared from their lives for over 35 years. When remet due to sister's terminal CA diagnosis, this guy at 81 years of age, asked "do you remember when I got you in back seat of the car?". Yes, I remembered and no longer a girl (19 at time), I begged him to bring it on and now I would take care of him myself. He did not advance, only enjoyed his sick, twisted fantasy memories. Yes, it is very frightening, their fantasies are real and deserved to them.

@Jeffrey Dohnger I think she meant to say her brother in law tried to assault her and when she went and told her sister what happened, the sister dismissed it for what it was (sexual assault) saying that she (the victim) misunderstood his actions (the perpetrator). She (the sister) minimised the assault by saying his actions were not the actions of a pervert, he was just showing affection towards her (the victim) like a father does towards a daughter. Good on her to exclude them from her life. I know it was a different time, but still... It must have hurt even more when the sister didn't believe her and dismissed the assault like it was only in her head.

When you listen to Hitchcock's interviews on KZread and hear that famous line of his " actors should be treated like cattle", it makes a lot of sense listening to Tippi. I believe everyone word she's saying. It's sad how people get hypnotised and struck by celebrities aura and can't see straight. I make one observation comment about some well know actor and I get attacked by 10s of other commenters like how dare you say something like that about him!

In the Hitchcock/Truffaut interviews he rarely calls the actors by their names, it's always the girl, the boy, the man. He was a very strange person with a casual disregard for the actors who brought so much to his work. And completely tactless, criticising actors who'd been in previous films of his while they were still alive.

The interviewer says Hitch was always doing this with new actresses. But the famous 'Hitchcock Blondes' like Grace Kelly and Kim Novak claimed that he never crossed the line.

Topi Hedren is a wonderful actress I love her still so beautifu!

The interviewer and Ms. Hedren said "it (i.e., the sexual harassment & stalking) by the director) couldn't happen again" in this time. I disagree! It does happen. Incidents and situations go unreported (for years) due to the power imbalance between the "boss" (or person in power) and the underlying. (Think FOX's Roger Ailes, and Harvey Weinstein...and sadly, bosses in corporate and academic worlds...)

I'm afraid you misheard what Hedren said, as have some others here. In context, she was responding to what she thought was a question about the audition process when the studio system prevailed. But she then catches up with the question. And responds to it comprehensively, and in no uncertain terms.

Still very beautiful and articulate.

Heartbreaking. Her girls got success for her!💝

The snide remark about Martin Balsam was uncalled for. Beauty is only skin deep. Mr. Balsam had a stellar career, active from 1947 to 1995. He and Joyce Van Patten were married for 5 years. Their daughter Talia Balsam is also an actor. Las Vegas, NV July 21, 2019

I really feel for her. I had an ex-boyfriend who stalked me for years. I moved halfway across the country to escape him, then months later he moved to continue stalking me. People thought it was flattering; it was horrible. The only thing that stopped him was that he was older, got prostate cancer, and died. Stalkers are terrible. They take so much away from the people they stalk.

I agree. Try being stalked by a cop. That's even scarier. Retaliation is always possible by their friends on the force. They can and will frame you or take your freedom.

I'm so sorry to hear any of this about people for whom I have great respect. Ms Hedren certainly was talented enough to have had a wonderful career. Hitch must have been a bit full of himself, the quality of his work was worthy of adjectives used these days in promotional extravaganzas. This is an ugly business, destroying people. You don't need facts, only power, nobody questions that. Hitch had more than just power, he earned it, but this is the lamest use of it I can imagine. I have had those words used against me, also (I'll end your career) for different reasons, so my career never started. The perverse reality of the system that supports this kind of action is oddly necessary at times but often should not be so fluid or peerless. I truly hope, and believe this is a frank and candid translation of actual circumstances and not missing some subtle aspect or temperament more enlightening. I don't think an established studio star would've put up with the live birds in any case, that could well have been on his mind at first. Doris Day comes to mind as an alternative, but I don't think so. Sometimes, in the making of a film, much of the character's deconstruction is echoed by the actor's experience and imagination. Maybe Hitch felt a little guilty, a metaphorical white knight in some subconsciously desperate search for his own humanity? He was, in many ways in uncharted territories.

Back in 2o14 near Acton where she lives I too lived there in a small country community she happened to be at the local market as she always went to I saw her and greeted her and she asked me for help while she loaded her groceries in her car. She handed me her wallet and said can hold this while I finish loading this bag? I couldn't believe it but then again, everybody knew each other so she wasn't worried.

She sounds grateful for the opportunity but ungrateful for the stalking.

I’m so sorry that Ms. Hedren had to endure such abuse and ... weirdness. I can’t imagine anyone else playing the female lead of The Birds. I’ll make sure to read her memoir.

Tippi Hedron describes awful abuse dished out by Hitchcock, the interviewer asks.."Could this happen today?..." well I guess we all know the real answer to that. Weinstein and others make Hitchcock look like a saint by comparison.

"COULD THIS HAPPEN TODAY?"- SHE SAYS NO....HARVEY WEINSTEIN, ASSAULTED OVER 100 WOMEN. YES ITS STILL HAPPENING.

Shortly after seeing The Birds as a child, I was gifted a parakeet by my Grandmother and promptly gave it back!

I read he didnt dare to do it to bergmann. She freaked him out 😂

It is simply amazing how directors and producers in the so-called "Golden Age of Hollywood" saw the bodies of the women who worked on their projects as their province, as much of a perk of their work as limousines and personal assistants. Most leading ladies simply made their peace with this ugly reality. Joan Crawford, when asked her opinion of the so-called "casting couch", replied: "It beats the hell out of the cold, dirty floor."
