Tio Kleberg of the King Ranch on Ranching and Conservation

Throughout the year, Richard Moore has been bringing us a series of stories about the historic ranches of deep South Texas. In today's final installment, Richard shares an exclusive interview with Tio Kleberg...5th generation descendant of Richard King founder of the famous King Ranch.

The king ranch just had to deal with the biggest fire they ever had. Living in Kingsville, TX it has its good and bads but it's a small town that is growing. Now if only they would fix the broken school system in Kingsville

I remember in the 60's my family used to visit my uncle on Maui, and he used work for the Kealakua Ranch who raised the Santa Gertrudis cattle from the King Ranch of S. Texas, I'm not sure of the relationship between the King Ranch & the Kealakai Ranch, but those Santa Gertrudis bulls and heifers were huge and were register cattle of King Ranch.

The Santa Gertrudis breed originated on the King Ranch and is the first registered breed established in the US. They were bred to withstand the harsh South Texas climate. I’m sure the breed thrives in Hawaii because of this breeding.

Story passed down from generations: King Ranch would stop anyone accidentally trespassin on their land, since it is so huge. They would round up these people (Mexican/American) Texicans throw them into an alligator pit. Worried they were going to reclaim the land back....

Mr.. kleberg? Will you conserve hunting opportunities for people, like the rest of us poor needy hunters across,,,,, underprivileged tx,,,,,, who don't even have a place to sit down and hunt or even see massive trophy 🤔 deer ,,like you do every a season ,,,,and I guess powerful individuals like yourself who control a large staff of servants and vast amounts of real estate,,, as an empire,, and who thrive 😉 on a grand scale with out the slightest care or concern in the world ,as the rest of us who don't have whole lot and who can only drive down the road outside your property and only wonder,,,,what it would be like to go on a real hunt there?

That's why I left texas. I'm an avid outdoorsman and texas is like the worst place to be for that. It's like 97 or 98 percent private land. If you grew up poor like myself your opportunities to enjoy the outdoors in texas is very very slim. Which is crazy because it's the largest state in the lower 48 yet has the least amount of accessible land. Now I live out west and can pretty much enjoy the outdoors as I please

Those sweet little animals would starve to death without hunters. Hunters are some of world's greatest conservationists. We let our actions speak for us. It isn't a cause, it is a way of life.
