TINY Nintendo Switch ornament with a working screen!
I built a Nintendo Switch Christmas ornament, with a working 1.14” (2.9 cm) LCD screen! It’s about 1/5th scale, has an SD card for playing videos (actually animated gifs), working WiFi, and the “thumbsticks” are clickable. Incredible 240x135 resolution!
We’re in a golden age of hobby electronics where this kind of project is doable from the comfort of your own home with free tools and relatively cheap parts!
3D CAD was done in Fusion 360, PCB design was done with KiCad, and firmware was made with Arduino and PlatformIO. Firmware is available for reference here: github.com/sco...

Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays!
Note: this ornament is not for sale, nor will the designs be made available (other than the generic reference code and schematic); this was just a fun side project that I documented to encourage others to learn more about STEM and build cool things.

Solder paste - Chipquick NC191AX15: www.digikey.co... (Works great. yes, it's leaded, so don't eat it!)
No-clean gel flux - Chipquick NC191: amzn.to/3KP5LMk (must-have for surface mount solder - I used this when soldering the LCD cable and tiny buttons in the video)
Highly recommended soldering iron - TS100: amzn.to/3Olswd0 (I use the Ralim/IronOS firmware, and built a barrel jack extension cable with flexible silicone-insulated dual-core wire for better maneuverability)
Solder - kester 60/40: amzn.to/3jJLdbZ (Probably overpriced. I'm very happy with this, and it was a huge step up from the cheap junk I used previously, but Kester has nearly doubled the price since I bought it, so I don't know if I'd truly recommend it anymore)
Similar tiny LCD module - 1.14" 240x135: amzn.to/3vhd8W0 (I bought the LCD bare, but this module should be easier to prototype with on a breadboard)

The fact that you were able to pack that all in in such a small area, really impressive stuff! Also, very clever to hide the battery cables in the ornament connector.

the screen resolution and brightness is brilliant for the size, looking great
Aw too bad you are not sharing/selling the files. I would love to make this ornament for my friend who is a really big switch/nintendo fan. Really love the work put into this! It looks absolutely amazing!
this is actually mind blowing to me. technology continues to amaze me with how all that worked in such a small space and all the coding to plays the gifs...just wow
Insanely impressive concept and execution. Also, it's been maybe 5 years since I worked with hobbyist LCDs, and that screen blew me away. It's on a completely different level than what I realized was available to the hobbyist now. Pretty incredible!
i found this from a random article that was recommended and as a complete sucker for the switch, this is probably the best Christmas gift and ornament ever. this was super cool to watch!

Man... imagine what tools we will have to play with 10-20 years from now!
That’s so cute. I love it, wouldn’t mind having one in gray.
So glad this got recommended too me! This is so cool and my mind is racing with ideas for how else this kind of tech could be used! :D
Nintndo Direct in a year be like: “We are so happy to finally introduce the switch light light light light light light light light light! Only for 1787876976586576765568 Dollars!“
Absolutely incredible that someone in their home with a computer can design all this stuff and have the parts show up at their door a couple weeks later.
Amazing work! Absolutely mind-boggling. I will admit, the first thing I thought when I saw this was, "Okay, but can it run DOOM?" 🤔

Don't give Todd ideas, they'll re-re-re-re-re-re-rerelease Skyrim for this and call it Insignificant edition.
Now this, this is art.
This is such an impressive project, really cool!
this is so cool! thank you for all the details about how you made it! this makes hobbyist electronics feel a lot more approachable!
My jaws dropped in disbelief and surprised at how awesome this tiny Nintendo Switch built. How I wish I can get this to gift my cousin as he's a Nintendo game fan! Amazing!
I don’t know what’s more impressive because I don’t know anything about anything that’s going on but it’s amazing that people know how to do this stuff.
This is an awesome project, and the end result is so cool! Nice Job!
I also recently experienced the pain of trying to fit too much components on a small board (not as much small as yours but it's my first time designing PCB). Your result looks great, and I find it even more impressive now that I have a better idea of just how much work must have went into it.
This is awesome and completely Greek to me! I tried to follow along but my jaw dropped by 4:45. I have no idea how anyone learns to do this, this is so incredibly cool!

Have you figured it out?
Great job there Scott, thanks for sharing such a fantastic hack. There’s not much that has brought a smile to my face since I have been in isolation and this hit the mark on so many levels…
This was a lot of effort for something 100% worth it.
Definitely makes me want one! Amazing job.
I like how you said the fireplace ornament is out of youre league yet you can make a tiny Switch! Very Cool!
resistors in the SD card slot - absolute brilliance!
Super well put together video, and an awesome project. Nice work!
This is absolutely amazing, the amount of detail is insane but the fact that it's all packed into a tiny ornament is incredible ✨✨ this was so inspiring to watch even tho I have none of your skills to create something like this, keep up the amazing work
the fact it works blows me away. You are bonkers good
Seriously I would buy it, I love miniature stuff, just like my miniature switch in ACNH lol
Very impressive. Great video. Looking forward to more like it!
Nintendo dont take this down please
Ridiculously Clever and well-executed. Brilliant Job!
This is genuinely so impressive. I am flabbergasted. The screen is so small, and to be able to play small gifs on it, is so impressive.
Get this man some more subs!
So Nintendo's going to commission you to mass produce them (with a backing) for the 2022 xmas holiday season? Because I'd place an order for one. Nice work.
this is very cool I never thought they made such tiny colour LCD's
This is insane- I’m obsessed with miniature things, and seeing this have a functional screen is amazing!!!
What is the 3D print service you found?
@scottbez1
2 жыл бұрын
JLCPCB just started offering it! When I ordered this the 3d prints had to be ordered and shipped separately from PCBs, so although the prints only cost $2, I had to pay an extra $16 for shipping even though I was already paying for shipping on the PCBs. They did say they will offer combined shipping in the future though.
Can it run Doom?

Probably
I hope you end up selling copies of these, because that is phenomenal. Just having the talent and intelligence to make this on your own is so inspiring.
Nintendo should hire you for their holiday decorations they sell at hallmark and Nintendo stores near the holidays. This is dope.
I wish I had that kind of understanding of electronics. Really amazing
WOW you have steady hands. good work A spray finish with a vinyl mask for the buttons would give you a better surface finish, but It probably looks very uniform in person anyway, the camera honing in on it just makes imperfections more obvious
Work of art
Just actually what the heck, bro! This is amazing 🔥
underrated AF video, very nice work
Awesome video. Now all I can think of his having a game boy color ornament..
This deserves 10 million views! Omg you are literally a genius!!
These kinds of things are amazing and me realize anything is possible. I get goosebumps when I see all the cool thing people have been creating recently and it motivates me to do more
This made me realise how cool technology is. Simply incredible.
That's freaking GENIUS!! You could make a lot of money with these...using unlicensed merchandise with the working screen though.
imagine being this smart and creative
Incredible! You made that look easy but I know how much work you put into that 👍 Keep up the great work!
I am a simple FOSS fan, I see kicad I press like.
I somehow never got around to watching this video. Thanks for showing off my fireplace! What you've done in such a small space is amazing.
Aww this little Nintendo switch is sooo cute 🥰
man thats up there with the coolest things ive ever seen.
It’s so cool that you designed this all and built only once that’s some serious planning! Incredible
I swear THIS IS THE PERFECT DOLL PROP DAMN
You are brilliant you should sale them as ornaments as long as they are like this product that would be amazing.
this is mindblowingly amazing. the level of detail is insane
Now we need a speaker to play loud Christmas music when it’s time for Christmas!
im gonna be honest, this deserves to be in the guiness world records
I love the fact that this guy shows every step in the process for those who's curious about making something like this on their own!
you're crazy dude. this is a seriously cool idea and works too well.
Sometimes I wonder how unfathomable it is, that I'm even the same being, as people like this.
Some people on this earth just simply amaze me everyday 🏆
The moment you started to design the board my brain melted. You probably could make a new one for me, anyway.
This is insane, unbelievably awesome
I love these ordaments and Christmas
that's incredible! i would pay to have it on my christmas tree (or desk, or shelf or really anywhere) i would want one of a looping footage from my favorite switch game SMT5. it would be something like a clip of a battle where the player attacks and the enemy heals and just have that loop 😁
It is not even Christmas anymore and I am still beyond impressed!
I don’t know what say…absolutely amazing
This is amazing. You explained it so simply and humbly and the final product turned out great.
I am speechless, the amount of effort put into this is incredible
This is my whole life right now its the cutest thing I've ever seen.
This is a certified nintendo tiny classic
Impressive. Simply impressive.
Very cool and the amount of dedication is admirable!
I would actually be interested in buying this. I love mini stuff
This guy saw Shank Mods' Gamecube controller on a Switch video and said, "I can make that way more ridiculous." Good job bro. Looks great!
It’s just too cute!!!
Three seconds in, that is the coolest thing I’ve ever seen I’m my fuggin life.
This is just the kind of brilliant and informative KZread video ive been waiting for!
Hoping this gets more attention, because wow what a creation. That’s awesome!
Very nice design and Build. I like it a lot. You did a great job.
ABSOLUTELY BEAST
Absolutely phenomenal
Brilliant ornament!
It would be nice to protect the components on the back to enclose it with a hatch for the SD card and a hatch for the programming points but MAN This is CRAZY COOL!!!
That is shockingly viewable too... In the zoom lens you have. But still, that is really cool.
It’s amazing how people at home with a KZread channel are building things more incredible than multibillion dollar companies
bravo. Tom would be more than proud !
This is the cutest thing ive ever seen.
I wish this was for sale. I would buy it in a heartbeat.
This is just absurdly amazing. Great job!
Wow i'm speechless, this is awesome 💕🦄
