Tiny, Mighty Kinsale, on Ireland's South Coast
Hello from the south coast of Ireland! I’m in Kinsale - a charming town of 5,000 people, 25 pubs, and a super-sized history.
I’m here with a wonderful group of Rick Steves’ Europe Tours travelers on a Best of Ireland in 14 Days Tour. I had a lot of fun surprising them at the welcome meeting (I signed up under a pseudonym), and now we’re well on our way. I’m posting daily as we make our way around the Emerald Isle - you can check out our itinerary at www.ricksteves.com/tours/irela....
This little clip really shows the joy of a Rick Steves tour: great group, great local guide, great small town, no stress, and lots of learning and efficiency. Our local guide, the wonderful Barry Moloney, has just shown us the clever “Tumbler Cart” - an 18th-century service vehicle that made the rounds picking up the townfolk’s sewage, then went into the nearby fields to provide the farmers with fresh fertilizer. Now he’s explaining how, in a kind of “Cuban Missile Crisis of the 17th century” for Britain, the Spanish nearly took over this town, which would have given them the naval equivalent of the high ground over England.
(This is Day 66 of my “100 Days in Europe” series. As I travel with Rick Steves’ Europe Tours, research my guidebooks, and make new TV shows, I’m reporting on my experiences across Europe. Still to come: England, Scotland, Germany, Switzerland, and more. Follow along at www.ricksteves.com/blog.)

It's been 20 years since I lived in Kinsale ( 2001-04 ) and worked as the bartender at An Seanachai ( traditional Irish bar, unfortunatelly for years for sale ). This was the best time of my life. The people, friends, sounds, stories and love that never happens again. Since than I dream of coming back again. At least for one day. To see old places where we spent our evenings, kissed girls, listened to An Seanachai, played football, saved the boat from sinking, saved the bar from the flood, saved ourselves from the world that keeps on running. It's beeen good old times. These days will never be forgotten and I hope that some day I'll have a chance to return.
Thanks for such an enthusiastic commentary on your trip. Not from Kinsale but VERY nearby (we used to smash the much more populated Kinsale at rugby, and I'll give no more away haha) and it's nice to see this kind of talk from a foreigner about a town I have great fondness for. Cheers!
i went to Ireland on september 2016 and my first stop was Kinsale and i fell in love completely 💚
Hey Rick, glad to see you still alive. Your hairs never turn old .
Rick, I love your videos , especially about Ireland and Italy. I also agree with you on your whole philosophy of travel. I don't care for the touristy places. I hope you and your family are well! : )
We were just there and went on Barry's tour - highly recommend it!
Hey Rick, I love your videos and audio guides. I am currently in Berlin and did your city walk tour yesterday. Thank you for doing what you do best 👌

It looks like it was early in the morning, Kinsale is always popular so book early if you plan on staying in the town.
I’m from kinsale! 😊
I'm sure what the guide's saying is great, and it's not the accent, (love the accent, btw) but I can't hear him, sound doesn't seem very good.
