Thank you for the comprehensive review of the RX100 VII. Your content was spot on for this camera. For its size I haven't found anything that compares. Even at this October 21 posting. I did buy this camera for all the reasons you mentioned. Excellent image quality and features in such a compact size. Just great when you don't want to lug the gear & have the capability of creating outstanding results with such a small camera. Yes, the price has remained high & for good reason. I have no regrets for the purchase. This camera will remain viable for awhile. Thank you for your excellent assessment & content. Best Always.....

I own both the V and VII versions of this camera and I use the V for photos (especially in low light) and the VII is now my video rig. LOVE LOVE LOVE them. I was never happy with focus speeds until I bought the V in 2018. Gave my Sony ILC5000 away because it was TOO SLOW TO FOCUS IN LOW LIGHT grrrrr

A truly interesting option and one of the best reviews I have seen of it. I am seriously considering one of these. A few years ago I got tired of carrying all my junk around with me. I went to MFT and I liked it. I got a 1” superzoom and found that I was using it more than my MFT stuff. Because it’s easier to carry one and several lenses. But if only I had something with similar capabilities but much smaller? Ow I just need to convince myself to spend that kind of money on a tiny camera. I may have to work up to it.

Ive had it for a few weeks - it's truly amazing to have a 200mm optical lens that literally fits in my jeans pocket. I wish it was slightly faster at 200mm (best aperture at this length is 4.5) but like the saying goes - the best camera is the one you are carrying and many times while traveling, my DSLR gets to be a bit much. Rather than solely relying on my phone when I don't want to bother with the DSLR, this has been a great option.

Excellent informative review. I have had this camera quite awhile and every once in awhile I get it out and am amazed by what it will do. I was out hiking at Marcus Landslide and saw a cactus wren. I aimed the camera without looking at the lcd and snapped away. When I got home I found those fotos in perfect focus! Great camera except it can be noisy in low light.

This review was one of the best done I've seen - a great combo of use case and demo / review. Not too technical OR too high level. My current predicament - I have an A6000 with a 24-70F4 and 35mm 2.8, but I don't bring it anywhere as it is too bulky to always carry with me. I loved my Canon S100 but it's getting long in the tooth and lacks zoom range. I'm tempted to trade in my A6000 gear for the RX100 VII. I'm worried primarily about the low light performance of this camera for indoor shots in average indoor light without flash. I much prefer using available light and limiting the use of flash, especially for 'people shots' wide open and wide angle. How did this perform for that use case? Also - for handheld/braced outdoor stills in night time 'street photography' with available light - similar to what the phone manufacturers are touting with 'computational photography' - would this stack up even at F2.8? Thank you for your insight!!!

I'm at the point in life that if I don't want to pack my Nikon D750 along, which by the way is very seldom....I'll use my iPhone 7+! We've gone through the small pocket size camera's (usually Lumix) and we're done with them. I'd rather put the $$ of this camera in with some more, and work upwards of the D850...or beyond that at some point personally. If/when Nikon moves upwards on the Z series with dual card slots, that might even be acceptable, but I still love the DSLR, and will stick with them until the end before moving forward. Thanks Leigh!

As a fellow adventurer, I really appreciate this video; thank you. I explain my needs more in this comment, but my question to you and anyone reading this comment is if you'd caution me against buying it, knowing what you know now. I'm up in the mountains at least 3x/wk mountain biking, climbing, and snowboarding. I used to shoot slr, but just got SO TIRED of lugging that setup around everywhere. I was going to buy a flagship phone, solely for the camera (#1 priority is that it HAS to fit in my pocket), but then I happened upon the Sony and Canon cameras duking it out and I'm pretty much sold on the Sony because of the 200mm zoom ability, as well as the ability to access photos on my phone. I primarily shoot landscape, with a little adventure sports photog, so those are my primary uses, although I do take photos of the kids and whatnot. The cost between the Canon and Sony doesn't really bother me, particularly given how much more zoom I'd get with the Sony. THAT SAID, I have always rather enjoyed the texture of Canon photographs; they have a slight bit more "film" feel to them, at least IMO. Do you feel like that's maintained in the G5XII and/or G7XIII? Anyway, based on what I'm saying here, any red flags you'd raise as I consider the Sony?

I haven’t used a Canon point and shoot for a long time but I’m confident in saying that the colors will absolutely be more natural coming out of them. Sony colors are challenging if you want that natural look without having to make extensive adjustments to your settings. That being said, the Sony is amazing. The smart autofocus and zoom are really nice to have. :)

Question re rx100v vs rx100vii. The rx100 v has a faster lense f1.8- f2.8 vs. f2.8 f4.5however the vii has a 24-200telphoto vs the iv 24-70. Which choice makes the most sense for you ? I have Sony rx100iv and shot 2000 clicks in Europe in 2017 and shot raw and jpeg. Wiith simple editing the pictures quality was excellent. The camera was ripped off when return my rental car so now I am evaluating another Rx 100m5 or M7 vs the Sony mirrorless a7riii. These little compact cameras are liberating because you can go on living life and have your camera too. I carried a Nikon DSLR for decades and I take more pictures with the compact because I always have it. I am a enthusiast and the BURDEN of hauling gear around with even a mirrorless format because of multiple lens and body weight. Three plus pounds, cubic inches, is less preferable than the convinces of using a compact, in my opinion. Plus the capability of the Sony is extremely creative for Architecture , Landscape and Video. Nice video.

Did you use Superior Auto Mode to shoot in low light? If yes, were you satisfied? I bought the rx100 vii to provide me with an improved option in low light situations instead of using my iphone. I hoped the 1” sensor would be better. However, after using the rx100 vii for several weeks, I’m unsure as to whether it is better than the iphone in low light situations. The rx100 vii often produces a noisy image in low light. It took me three months to decide on whether to purchase the rx100 vii because of its high price and f/2.8-4.5 range.

It was also a difficult decision for me. I miss the light sensitivity at the longer focal length. But the predecessor with the faster lens lacks the better processor with the faster autofocus and the stronger slow motion. Unfortunately, in the course of development there are things that get worse while others have become much better. Especially in nature a good telephoto lens is irreplaceable. Even in sports you don't want to do without the longer focal length. So which RX100 is the right one has to be adjusted to your own needs. If the RX100 V is enough, you save a lot of money. So here is a question with recording audio to videos (even though the onboard mic and sound quality is great) could you not plug a small mic like the Rode Video Go mic for cellphones in to pick up a little better audio? For those complaining about the high price, the "V" version of this camera is for sale at MPB.com for $525 in Excellent used condition. (I bought it from them a year ago.) The Mark V version is really, really good, too (and, in some instances, even better than the "VII.") It also has a 20.1 mp sensor, though the V's is different. The V has a 24-70mm lens, but it's faster at F1.8-2.8. It also has a zoom ring. It doesn't, however, have the mic jack of the VII.

If you want mirrorless, Nikon just released the Z50. Raymond shared our first video about it today ( kzread.info/dash/bejne/d56Hw7dmaLW8m7w.html ) and a full review will be coming soon. Also, Sony has some great APS-C options. I used the a6400 earlier this year when it was launched and enjoyed it ( kzread.info/dash/bejne/nYyMlamsaNHamZM.html ) but they have other options too!

I wouldn't buy this camera. I would buy an a6400 instead. I have an hx99 that has nearly the same feature with a smaller sensor. It does the small camera work I need ...no prob. I don't think you can justify the cost of this camera easily.

Nice review of a great camera but I'd have a hard time paying $1300 for a P&S camera.

I would have said the same thing until I used it. I'm still considering purchasing it!

Powerful (expensive) compact camera but pocketable ??? Only if one has very large pockets or one stretches those pockets. Very high quality but far too complex for a "point and shoot" camera.

Since it has no ND filter it is useless in bright environments whilst maintaining 24fps for video.

The a6400 is awesome but the point of this camera, or me, is lots of range in a tiny package. :)

Similar to the Leica version I have. Ok for family shots but not a serious camera. But they do fit into your jacket pocket.

Many of these images are horrendously bad. I have this camera. It's fun to use but it really has its limitations.

200mm in your pocket is the USP. Full frame A7 200mm? Nope. Fit in your pocket? Absolutely.
