​@@Sreetam867 I'm from Australia but we were also part of the conflict so I'll try to explain. Timor Leste was originally a Portuguese colony that was illegally taken over by Indonesia after they got their independence from the Dutch. Indonesia reportedly neglected the Timorese and their laws didn't take into consideration Portuguese speakers or Christians. Lots of Timorese started protesting, which led to the Timorese g*nocide in which Indonesia killed 1/3rd of Timor Leste's population. Australia originally didn't intervene but stated support for Indonesia until we realised Timor has 🌟resources🌟 and helped them gain independence. After they became their own country in 2002, Australia had them sign a deal that basically gave us full jurisdiction to exploit their natural resources and control their media sometimes via violence, which made it much harder for them to climb out of poverty despite being democratic and geographically blessed. I'm guessing partially to counter separatism in West Papua? some (not all) Indonesian media portrays the Timorese as traitors who deserve their current dilemma, and as tensions are growing between Indo and Australia we both use the others exploitation of Timor as a weapon to make ourselves look better. A journalist here was even jailed for reporting on the situation and pointing out how corrupt our government can be to small nations. So it's mostly nationalism and pride from both of us and a vulnerable country caught in the crossfire :/

@@AuChoco Independence from both Indonesia and Portugal. Between 1975-2002 UN members were divided regarding the recognition of the Indonesian invasion and occupation of Timor Leste. Western countries at first recognised Indonesian occupation on Timor while Portugal, Brazil etc refused to recognise the illegal occupation. In the end however Western countries switched sides in 1999 and recognised Portugal as the the legitimate administrator and protector of occupied Timor Leste, so technically speaking - occupied Timor Leste was *still* a protectorate of Portugal. This ended in 2002 when the UN-sponsored transitional government declared its independence.
