Anyone needing to release harmonic balancer pulley bolt and dont have a decent impact, put a long breaker bar on pulley bolt and let it lock into the ground surface at about the 430 500 oclock position and hit the starter key briefly, one quick kick of the starter and this should be sufficient to crack the bolt loose. Works good.

An excellent video on waterpump change on the 2002 Mitsubishi. I wonder if you could also include some drawings of the parts you work on, such as they used to show on installation manuals, (for the more mechanically challenged such as myself)? You did a great job for the more mechanically familiar though. I salute you, and I thank you.

Just like to add a easy way to line your new belt up without having to mark the pullys etc, only if the old belt hasn't slipped, "get a Stanley cutting razor or similar, cut the belt around the belt in half and take the front half of the belt off,fit the new belt half on then cut the old back half of the old belt off and slide the new belt fully on ☆Easy Done☆,cheers.

I'm a mechanic and he should be putting a full timing belt kit in there. These jobs are labour intensive so you replace all the parts while you're in there. His tensioner was sticky. In the timing belt kit, you get the belt, cam (cams) and crank oil seals, a new tensioner and a new idle bearing and in some kits, you get the water pump (if not, buy one separately). While you have it apart, you have easy access to all of these items and the job is done correctly, leaving you satisfied than nothing in there will fail. If you're serious about preventive maintenance, then this should be done every 100 000 km (60 000 miles). I'd guess that this engine has done 200 000km (120 000 miles), by the sound of the water pump, without having a full kit placed in it. In saying that, you have done the job correctly procedure wise.

John, thank you for this information. I was just about to ask a question regarding what else should be changed when replacing the timing belt, since the job is already labor intensive, but you have already answered the question. I have a 2011 3.5L V6 Montero/Pajero that has similar engine parts. I will search online, but might you have a link to a full timing belt kit? I'd like to see all that is required.

Getting ready to do this job. Is it necessary to remove the large aluminum bracket by the timing belt? Didn't know if you did this as you were changing the water pump as well. Debating on changing the water pump while i"m in there even though its not had any problems yet. Lots of miles on the car may save myself some work later on. Any other tips you can recommend?

they're the same motor it's a Mitsubishi design and was shared between Chrysler and Mitsubishi other modifications were made for other components but the engines are really identical. you can also find this motor in some Toyota's and in the Hyundai Tiburon as well as probably a few more cars. still Mitsubishi's design just used in a variety of places.

Me thinks it is far easier to drop the engine out of the bottom of the car to do all this work.Every engine guy I have spoken with about replacing the timing belt & water pump says it is the biggest pain in the arse job, especially in a Mitsubishi V6.They actually charge more to do the fitment than what a new engine is worth.

I'm having trouble same type of motor on a 2003 Mitsubishi eclipse GT. I'm stuck at the crankshaft sprocket/gear I'm unsure as to how it's removed there very few "how to's" and the few I've found show people simply pulling them off by hand. I've removed the balance and pulley and I'm trying to replace the oil pump components. the upper pull pan is still attached I believe I can remove it since I've lowered the exhaust and removed the starter but I'm unsure. Also the engine is still in the car, so far both heads are removed engine block still in place, and the lower oil pan has been removed. if this makes sense and anyone may have someone helpful info I'd be more than happy to hear it, I'm open to suggestions just kinda stuck at what to do. thanks for reading this one.

Sounds like you should of just taken the entire engine out of the engine bay if it's striped down that much and still can't resolve the parts to fit,why would you be needing to replace oil pump drives etc,if it was an internal oil pump,I'd take the whole engine out but as for me,I only have and only buy chain driven car engines, I realize the belt is superior yet once the belt is near due change they become a worry and infact a worry the entire time, the old chain may rattle and not perform quite as well but usually get 2 or 3 times the milage before needing replacement, buy a chain motor, all my cars are chain motors,I'm keeping it that way because of that 1 belt reason.

@@Munibahmad241 For this motor - a full kit includes the water pump, belts, seals and tensioner. The kit costs around 400-450. As you can see from the vid - there is a lot of work involved. The idea of the kit is to get everything done that can be done while you are in there. Labor costs pump the price up if you have a mechanic doing it.
