    I just found out that the SEPTA transit system in Philadelphia is making another subway station accessible.

    In the US, we can vote by mail, meaning we don't need to go anywhere. Contact your local Election office to get added to the vote by mail program.

    This makes me grateful to live in a country where the government informs me that I'm eligible and which polling station I need to use and everything else I need to know. Voting should be as easy as possible and registering to be eligible definitely isn't that.

    In Portland, OR every resident is sent mail in ballots for every election along with a booklet with the key laws being voted on with feedback from each party on how the law will impact citizens...the booklet also contains the name/location/title of each candidate up for election and each candidate provides a synopsis of their platform. The booklets can be obtained in nearly a dozen languages. Plus you can also vote in person if you prefer but most citizens mail in. This is an amazing program that's not only accessible to all but allows citizens to make informed choices. I wish more states in the US did this program.

    That sounds amazing, especially the booklets. This way it's actually possible to make an informed choice without getting confused by all of the information out there.

    If you have a postal vote, make sure you've received it in good time. And that your local postal service is up to getting it back to the receiving office in time to be counted. Dont forget you can still take it to your local polling station if it arrives too late. Yes, this defeats the purpose of a postal vote, but it means your vote is counted, your voice heard. And you don't need ID to do it either - just hand over your completed and sealed postal vote.

    Check the info on your postal vote carefully, as I'm pretty sure that my local election one said that postal votes could be handed into the Council, but *not* a polling station. Might be differences in local policies?

    If you're in the UK, you can vote by post even if you don't have ID (you submit your signature when you register for your postal vote).

    I like Australia system, it’s a requirement that you vote, but you get a sausage so that makes up for it.

    They need to start doing that round here - the turnout for the last election was 19% (UK, local only). Now, I was happy with the result, but dear GOD I am appalled by that statistic. Everyone moans about the state of local infrastructure, but don't bother to vote??? (That said, once again, my postal vote only got in because I physically took it to the polling station. The returning officers are wondering why they still bother, with how bad the system is. That might account for some of the lacking turnout, but certainly not 71%.)

    @@CharityAngelSpectrum That's crazy 😳😳😳 If you renounce your right to vote, you also renounce your right to complain. It should work that way, anyway 🤷 I lived in the US for 17 years and it would drive me nuts to see people just not be bothered to vote. Here in Australia you can invalidate your ballot, but that's an active choice. You can't be too lazy to do nothing at all. (There are provisions for illnesses and emergencies etc.) And since covid the eligibility for early voting and postal voting is much wider, thankfully.

    @@sarahmacintosh6449 I suspect some of it is apathy - the whole system is run by people more interested in their own importance than what the job is supposed to be, so why bother? But, my local representatives are all actually *good* politicians, doing it for the right reasons. I'd love for them to be more supported by their constituents. A responding victory doesn't really mean much when you have fewer than 400 votes. I like the idea of being able to spoil your ballot. I haven't taken that option yet, but I'd have been tempted this year but for my MP being a decent bloke. It's just a shame about which party he represents - I want him, but not his boss.

    What political issues are important for disabled people? Is there any party who is more anti-disabled people? Or any party that is more friendly to disabled people?

  • @CherylLime

    @CherylLime

    Ай бұрын

    In general more right wing (ie conservatives ) political policies are less friendly towards disabled people because they believe in the free market, lower taxes, and therefore less investment in public services such as health and social care. This goes a long way to explaining the current state of public services in the UK. However it is impossible to know what you are voting for because all political parties just say what they think people want to hear to win votes and then do whatever the hell they like.
