Times Method Actors Took Things Way Too Far

Ойын-сауық

There have been many legendary actors who employ Konstantin Stanislavski’s famous acting techniques, known as the Method. Actors like Marlon Brando, Daniel Day-Lewis, Robert De Niro, and Christian Bale have all been known to be practitioners of Method acting.
Some of the most memorable characters in cinema are the result of this technique. We wouldn’t have characters like Travis Bickle from Taxi Driver, Vito Corleone from The Godfather, and Bill “The Butcher” Cutting from Gangs of New York if it weren’t for Method actors.
But Method actors have also been known to take the craft one step too far at times. Here are actors that took things too far with Method acting.

With Christian Bale, it should be noted that he got super fit for American Psycho, lost weight for Reign of Fire, got back up to normal weight and muscle mass for Equilibrium, dropped to an alarmingly low weight for The Machinist, bulked back up in a serious way for Batman Begins, thinned down for Rescue Dawn, then got back into fighting fit condition for The Dark Knight, lost a good chunk of the mass and weight for The Fighter, and then got back into shape for The Dark Knight Returns. This is all over a span of 12 years that he dropped and gained back his weight over an over to different degrees in both directions.

There's a story about the filming of "Marathon Man", where Dustin Hoffman's character is on the run from government agents trying to kill him. He'd stayed up all night, etc., etc., etc., so he could be disheveled for filming. Costar Laurence Olivier asked him what the deal was, and Hoffman explained "the method", to which Olivier is reputed to have said, "Why not do what I do? It's called 'acting'".

He had to take medications both for his mental and physical health, and physical therapy for 6 months after the shoot. If that's not taking too far, I can't imagine how far YOU'd go until you put your foot down. Not gonna lie, I love Adrien Brody's performances and his dedication, but there's certain limits we have to take consideration.

@@strongwise1255 his performance goes beyond the weight gain / loss. American Psycho is accessible and iconic, with a character who is easy to be charmed by, usually because he is so bold and overt. The opposite is true in his portrayal of Trevor Reznick, everything simmers below the surface, and his every action is enfeebled and filled with existential guilt. His weight loss alone doesn't make this so, but it must have contributed to the physical and mental state necessary to embody such a miserable, vulnerable guy. It's fine to like Patrick Bateman better as a character, but the comparison is apples to oranges and I think the nuance and humanity in The Machinist make it hard to say what is "better."

Great actors sometimes give bad performances in a good movie or give good performances in bad movies. A sign of good character is being able to laugh at your mistakes and shortcomings and not take things so seriously, that's what the Razzies and comedy roasts are for. All the best actors have done crappy movies or given crappy performances at some point, with maybe the exception of Daniel- Day Lewis, but that's only because he does a movie every 4-5 years.

Christopher Carr and Tash, The video is about method acting and how it transformed the actor's acting abilities. I know Kutcher played Kelso. But if his method acting paid off, he'd sound like Jobs, not Kelso. And of course he's yelled. The only reason I said I haven't heard him yell, is to show I have no basis for comparing Kutcher's yelling scene to anything Jobs has done. But I have scene Jobs in interviews, and the comparison I can make between the scenes with Kutcher speaking and Jobs speaking, I just don't think they sound alike. Get it?
