BRO, I JUST WANT TO SAY THANK YOU! I have an uneven lot and we are so used to slab on grade for homes, we forget about Pier and Beam! Your terrain is almost identical grade-wise, and I finally see a full project from start to finish that is DYI! Thank you man, I hope you have this place for many years to come and maybe some day your kids can see you building with your own hands!

I’m 100% building an A-frame. I was undecided between that and a container home, but I have always been obsessed with the triangle. 😅 and putting solar on it.

the principle of the A frame is aesthetically cool and seems simpler to build but it requires a very high roof height to have enough habitable floor space useful when standing
@retireorbust

I bet those who live in Mammoth Lakes in the Sierra Nevada are wishing they had an Aframe. Sheds snow like nothing else.
@poofygoof
Жыл бұрын
They are not efficient with materials either, and inherently dark unless you break the A-frame-ness with "skylights" or dormers to get windows in elsewhere than the two ends. Designs are heavily weighted to use mezzanines and open floor plans to get any natural light past the ends. The aesthetics are fun though, but I wonder how much of that is borrowed nostalgia from the A-frame boom of the late 50s and the contrast vs conventional straight-wall houses. For snow shedding, you can build a regular house with a 60 pitch roof, and even design your attic like an A-frame, but you get all that sweet conventional space below the roof. :)
Thanks for this lesson.

This is so awesome, thanks for sharing because this is giving me an idea of what I need to do when we build an A-frame in NC starting later next year. How did you attach the floor joists to the beams? Nails? I would have though some sort of bucket/angle would be used... Also, I noticed that you have some joists flush with the beams and then you put the joists on top of the beams...why is that?
@darryldarks
6 ай бұрын
Howdy! Yeah, my buddy convinced me to just to throw the floor joists on top of the beams and I just never took the other joists down. But yeah, I used galvanized nails when I nailed the floor joists to the beams. Good luck with everything! 🙏👍

If you don't mind me asking what are you using for rafters 2x10s? Married in the center? And how wide and tall was that house it's so hard to find info on these houses unless you buy a kit
@darryldarks
2 ай бұрын
For sure. So, the roof rafters are joined 2x10x16s. Two 2x10x16s make 1/2 of a full rafter. Then I cut them down ton size at 27ft and change long. The rafters are joined together in 3 spots. Ripped 8 ft pieces of 23/32 plywood connect the sides and a triangle piece connects both sides of the rafters at the top. Make sense? You may need to watch my “Raising the A’s” video. It will give a better visual. 🙏👍

Liked the video, wish that music wasn’t in it. What was the benefit of using a cement post vs having a concrete finished basement as the foundation?
@darryldarks
Жыл бұрын
Are you telling me you didn’t absolutely love those boppers? Come on now. All I play are straight bangers only. Just kidding. Glad you found my channel! The reason I just went with piers vs a finished basement is because I’d have to excavate way more to make a level basement floor. 🙏👍

How were you able to figure out city codes and how big you could build this cabin? I’m trying to do this in California
@darryldarks
Жыл бұрын
Great question. So, the A Frame is in Comal County, TX. Which is super loose with building codes. In fact, all that the county cares about is your septic tank and driveway. They do not care how you build your house. Now, in the property deed, it did specify things like square footage requirements and some others. So, I just went off of those things to put a plan together in respect to the other houses in the neighborhood. But that’s really it. Yessirski!! 👍👍

Terris! You can absolutely do this! Before I started building this A-Frame, I’d built a few small things around the house like; barn doors, tables, and a faux fireplace. So, this project was entirely different. My best advice is to watch all my videos. Lol. And, read as many books on construction as you can. I like to shop at ThriftBooks online. Learn framing, concrete, roofing, plumbing, etc. If you can learn about the mysteries of the human body you can learn this. They have better pricing than Amazon. God bless you, bro! You got this! 🙏👍
