Time Team S04-E03 Birmingham,.West Midlands

Birmingham residents get an on-the-doorstep lesson in archaeology when Tony Robinson and Mick Aston call in the experts to try and locate one of the most important sites in the history of the Industrial Revolution - Matthew Boulton's 18th century mint.
But the task to find the site of the largest coin presser in the world isn't an easy one - given that it is buried beneath the houses and gardens of Soho, Handsworth. But curious to know what lies under their patios, gardens and glass houses, locals are only to willing to give Time Team permission to begin the three day dig in a race against the clock. They even invite them to a street party!

Loved it when they came opon the petrol tank and the way Tony sniffed that bit of pipe. It had me in stitches. Priceless. Love these early episodes in particular due esp to Mick's influence. This series is a real blessing. People who are missing or ignoring them don't know what they're missing or ignoring!

Lost in Woods As kids we would often find scrap metal and occasionally coins. Unfortunately no one knew about the soho mint back then. So the elder (dumb) kids would say it’s just an Irish penny. Shame really. I plan on one day doing my own excavation or go round with a metal detector to see what I find. Here’s hoping for a treasure chest!

While Industrial Archaeology isn't my favorite thing, this episode is a beautiful example of surveying, document searching, keyhole digging, and recreating history. I love it (around 14:10) when Tony asks Stewart how he figured out the maps were wrong.... "ummm, surveying" - that is, I did the job the map maker's didn't do right.
