Based on eyewitness written accounts. In the 17th century, a Bulgarian Christian region is selected by the Ottoman rulers to serve as an example of conversion to Islam. A Janissary who was kidnapped from the village as a boy now serving the Ottoman sultan is sent to force the reluctant inhabitants to convert. The Bulgarian christians have to chose between physical annihilation and losing their spiritual identity. Ultimately torture, violence, and rebellion break out. Based on real events and the novel "Time of Parting" (Vreme Razdelno) by Anton Donchev.
The novel is based on two individual eyewitness written accounts - by the priest Aligorko and the Venetian. The resulting text is a translation of the original French and Old Bulgarian (Old Church Slavonic) texts. All names, characters and events appear in the original manuscripts.

In this film the problem is not ottomans or other the problem is Karaibrahim aga he is Bulgarian and he killed his father his brother this man is problem and everyone insult all of turks and ottoman? you really watch film or just what you want to see? aga is bulgarian and other janissaries are not turkish they are all christians children and you can see aga dont forgot his father his village but he choose to hurt his family only turk in this film is ismail bey and his not bad men

They hate the Turks. Thats not about the film. The film wanting to telling a diffirent storie and they wanted to contuneing hate. They are not watched the film I guees.

Who turned this man into a beast? Who took him from his home and made from him a monster? Who send the soldiers to kill innocent people? Who took all these solders from their homes and turned them into monsters? Who sent them against their own parents? Was it this man or were the ottomans? Where is the lie? You want very much to hide the shameful history but you cannot. What did you leave on the Balkans? Did you built something to remain after you? Did you create schools? Did you bring culture? What did you do for the well-being of the people here? And no, we don't hate the Turks. But we hate the death, the pain, the disaster, the destruction, the retrogression you left here on the Balkans!

@@cloneeja You didn't say anything about the total lack of culture and the regress during the Ottoman rule over the Balkans! What will you say about this? The Ottomans were the real racists - calling the Bulgarians with a special name for second hand people, killing them for 500 years. Forcing them to take the foreign faith. Taking their children, etc. Each and everyone who was not a Muslim was discriminated. If this is not a racism, then I don't know what it is... In between the Germans officially recognized the Armenian genocide done by the Ottomans. What can I tell more? When the facts speak, the gods are silent. It is not we that hate you - you hate us! You hated us for 500 years, took our land, out homes, our lives. Isn't it a cynicism what you write here? You better try to do something good now in order to compensate at least a little bit the disaster you created on Balkans in the past because the consequences are still being felt. And about 1988 - of course I don't agree with the change of the names because it was inhuman. But the same happened to Bulgarians for 500 years! Why shouldn't we show it? You have to remember first what bad you did to other people and after that to complain about yourself. This disaster should never be repeated again and the hate you have to everyone who is not Muslim should stop somewhere and some-when before more innocent people die!
