Tim wrote this song when he and his wife were living in the UK with their new baby daughter, nine-thousand miles from his family at home in Perth. It starts out with Tim's usual tongue-in-cheek contempt towards organised religion but it's later revealed that he's singing to his daughter and teaching her that Christmas is about family and the people who love you and you can rely on. He really loves Christmas because he'll be seeing his family and drinking white wine in the Perth Summer sun. I cry every time when I listen to this song and I've probably listened to it (and every version of it on YT) about a hundred times.

This. Christmas. Family, chilled wine, cold ham and salads, talking and coming together, thinking of those that are away or gone. Sitting in the sun on a scorching summer's day and mindlessly singing along to jingle bells or white christmas despite the fact that most of us haven't ever seen snow. The person looking for someone to write the songs for the musical Matilda went to a Tim Minchin concert. It wasn't until Tim played this song as a last minute encore that the Matilda scout thought that Tim could write the entire emotional range needed for adapting the beloved children's book by Roald Dahl to a musical. Minchin was hired, and Matilda became a huge hit. I think White Wine in the Sun expresses how 85% of Australians experience Christmas. Whatever our private relationship with god, faith or atheism, the majority aren't into organised religion, or attending church/temple. We'll go once or twice a year to make our relatives happy. Or when we gather as a family for Christmas, the religious might go off for midnight mass while the atheists stay and do the dinner dishes, and both sides think they've got the better end of the bargain. When I was young, families were still doing a full English roast dinner, with steamed plum pudding and hot custard in the heat of an Australian Christmas. We decorated with fake snow and holly wreathes. Over my lifetime Christmas meals evolved into cold platters: it's prime seafood season, and fresh berry season. Little multicultural treats like Gingerbread and (fruit) mince pies and cakes broadened outward to Eastern European and Middle Eastern small dainty cake treats like baklava and halva. And chocolate. Lots of chocolate. We still love fragrant pine trees to decorate, but wreathes and decorative flora have shifted towards eucalyptus twigs and native flowers. Painted gum nuts will last a lifetime of christmases. Stars and Angels are universal signs of benevolence and well wishes, even in homes where you won't find a Nativity.

He is frickin brilliant Nick isn’t he… this song particularly and personally feels like he has me on a knife’s edge……one line of lyrics, even one pause or inflection and he can tip me one way into belly-laughter, or the other way into tears…. In one sense it would be merciful of Tim to release the tension right at the finish of the song with something that cracks the entire up in hysterics, but I guess that would maybe be to easy and obvious. Instead he leaves us, balancing ( if not resting) on that knife’s edge….

Tim can put a little levity into his serious songs, and makes some of his humorous songs thought-provoking. In the before times, lots of Aussies (if they had the financial resources) liked to try and travel abroad sometime between finishing high school in their late teens and settling into more rooted life in their 30s. Sometimes it would be a gap year spent backpacking across one continent or another, or working for a couple of years in the UK, North America, or Europe. Being stuck literally on the other side of the planet from home during family commemorations (not necessarily Christmas, but also birthdays etc) is a familiar ache for many. And then Covid-19 happened and people got stuck everywhere.

It’s such a perfect Christmas song. The link to family is so strong. There’s the usual nod to Tim’s beliefs, which make it brilliantly honest, and the phrasing of some of those complicated sentences which are so indicative of Tim’s writing. I love it. It was the first song I listened to when my niece was born on Christmas Day 7 years ago. It will always make me think of her and Tim is right, wherever she goes and whatever she does, we will make her feel safe in this world☺️

This is also the song that nailed down for the producers of the MATILDA musical that Tim would be good to write the book for that show. He'd been very funny at the show of his they'd gone to see, but they weren't sure he could do the serious, emotional writing that they wanted. Then he closed the show with this song and they knew he had everything they wanted. The Matilda musical has since gone on to massive success, of course.

Also, there’s a wonderful documentary on him called, “Rock n Roll Nerd.” His sister, or something, filmed it when he played at the Edinburgh film festival is wonderful as is the speech he gave at a University of Melbourne graduation. He is a really wonderful person.

Nick, I am so glad that some subscriber back in 2021 asked you to check out Tim Minchin. I have followed his career from the early days. And yes, I consider him to be a genius, in that he has a boundless talent which no-one else in the world can replicate.

I can't believe that I'm sitting here, listening to this song - with interruptions - for the umpteenth time and bawling my eyes out, like EVERY single time I hear it. And I'm not even Australian, so his Christmas experience is a lot different from mine, but the way he transports the sentiment of that song that is both homesickness and infinite joy in the simplicity of the melody, the performance and the lyrics is just mind-blowing to me. And I'm with you, I came to Tim Minchin via his batshit crazy insane genius comedy, but this one and 'Not perfect' get me bawling cathartic tears every time, like mini therapy sessions and they're my favorite songs. Just beautiful. Sorry so vomit my emotions all over your comment section without really commenting on the reaction, I just needed to put this down somewhere. LOL.

The death vibe- right on, I got that too. The last verse he's singing to his baby daughter- when she's 21 or 31, and doesn't include Gram in the list. I think that's why this gets to me, I'm an only child and didn't have children. When my folks are gone it will only be me at Christmas. Anybody reading this- take a minute to appreciate your family and tell them you love them.

I saw one of Tim's shows live at a medium sized venue in my hometown, not long before he got huge. He was already nationally known, but not so famous that the line for autographs was crazy so we got in line and chatted to him for a bit, he's a lovely guy. And then before you know it he's not playing anything smaller than a stadium and is writing Broadway plays. He deserves all that success though, he's brilliant. He can be scathing or sincere with equal ease, he's a phenomenal pianist, his insights are raw and his wordplay is genius. There is only one Tim Minchin.

Your feels on this song being a tribute to a lost loved one (daughter) is actually pretty on point. And the white win in the sun is a reference to Australians celebrating Christmas outside as its mid summer here that time of year

My favourite Christmas song, celebrating the Aussie way. A buffet of prawns, cold meats and lots of salads. Christmas cake and assorted cold desserts and cheese. White and rose wine, champers (short for champagne) and beer. Everyone in the pool if there is one, backyard cricket if there's not. Welcome to an Aussie Christmas, where we try to keep cool instead of warm.😎

Like everyone else has said this is the quintessential Australian Christmas song. It’s everything about a typical Aussie Xmas. Family, Sun (it’s hot down here at Xmas), drinking chilled white wine/beer, bbq’s. The bridge verse about his daughter gets me every single time as a parent. Splendid, Tim simply is a mastercraftsman lyricist and performer.

I just watched your previous reactions to Tim, and it was giving me a hankering to listen to this song because... even as a Brit, living less than 50 miles from almost all my immediate family, it is still my absolute favourite Christmas song and makes me sob from start to finish. I pretty much only ever play it once a year because it destroys me! (I'm counting this as my 2020 listen, because... yeah, I skipped it that year) So I was super glad to see it pop up 'next'. And yes, I am now a wreck. But I'm so glad you felt it too. I'm loving your videos.

I cry so often at this song, as for a lot of us on this side of the world (NZ, for me) this is such a clear tie to our memories of Christmases. Whatever goes on in the year, come Christmas we're relaxing and having a drink in the sun with those we love most. It can speak to the loss of those not there for the drink this year, or the anticipation of new family members to come, and even the loneliness of someone overseas and not part of the festivities. It's our Christmas, in a song.

I loved to hear this song first time with you, via your reaction video. Great commentary. I've never quite thought of the Australian Christmas. It is quite fascinating to find that we share the exactly same sentiments in rather different circumstances; in my case, in the middle of the gloomy snowy winter of Finland, singing our beloved melancholic traditional songs, coming together to my parents' home, remembering the loved ones that are with us no more -- visiting and lighting candles on their graves -- taking a look over the graveyard lit only by thousands of candles and lanterns... Tim Minchin is a formidably humaine being.
