    Obviously Tim is highly advanced in his technique, but what really strikes me is the music. He creates an atmosphere of sound that I get lost in. The way he layers harmonic content, and his choice of chords and voicings is stunningly beautiful.

    Jazz has always been too complex for my ears. but right now Iam on the verge of crying listening to this. The weight of the chords are extremely heavy for my heart and the notes over them sounds like an emotional story narration throughout. Iam in awe.

    As fantastic as this undoubtedly is, please let us not ignore the fantastic drummer and bass which provides the warm ground and thermals on which the guitar can soar.

    It occurs to me that these few incredible players like Mr Miller that carry forward the ideas of Allan Holdsworth - get criticized for copying him. That is both insane and stupid to say such things. Would we say of whomever that fine, soulful guitar player was on the Mississippi Delta that first expressed himself (or herself) with that now incredibly familiar style - that they shouldn't be "copied"? Thank God that it evolved into a style that decades (and more and more decades) later spread to jazz and rock! Holdsworth is incorrectly called a jazz-rock fusion player and composer. His work - and much of Mr Miller's (perhaps only by extension) work - also have strong influences that originate in chamber music, pub music in England that became popular int he time of Shakespeare - and in the liturgical music of western Europe dating back as far as 500 years ago. This is remarkably sensitive work.... extraordinary!!!

    Actually, to be honest I don' think Holdsworth thought much of clones. Supposedly he didn't think highly of Bill Connors 1980's material because Connors sounded too much like him and Connors sounded less like Holdsworth than Tim Miller.

  • @loszwillos

    @loszwillos

    Жыл бұрын

    @@thewestfaceofdhaulagiri6697"Clone" seems a harsh description to me. Miller seems to move freely in harmonical spheres that Holdsworth "discovered" first, but he still sounds different. And I am very happy about anybody who is able to do so, there are not many.

  • @thewestfaceofdhaulagiri6697

    @thewestfaceofdhaulagiri6697

    Жыл бұрын

    @@loszwillos "different" I don't see much and certainly not as different as Bill Connors and people called Connors clone. Here is what Holdsworth said about Connors that he was willing to put to print "HOLDSWORTH: It doesn't frustrate me at all, but it would frustrate me if I were them, because it's a waste of time. I mean, Bill Connors was, to me, an example of someone who had a very unique style. I think I first heard him on a Stanley Clarke album I loved, and on that album Bill sounded like Bill Connors. Now it's like ... I don't know. It makes me realize how fickle and unimportant a thing style is. It's interesting how something like that can push that person who's been imitated into a direction they might not otherwise have gone. For example, when people start to pick up on my things, it makes me realize how superficial those things are, and that makes me move forward. You realize, "Oh, that must have been so meaningless that it was just like a face panel from 1980," something that everybody had. Something else comes out and you realize it's just not an important thing at all. So when I hear people playing not just like me, but like, say Bill Connors used to play i t's positive inasmuch as it might move me towards something else. If someone else can't take the time to find it. I'm sure gonna look.. hard." Not that harsh but that is what he was willing to say to print. Now there is this guitarist named Dani Rabin who toured with Holdsworth and apparently had some discussions about Connors with Holdsworth. Apparently in private Holdsworth was harsher towards Connors. You can hear this by going to a video titled "4Fusion Friday: Mike Stern/John Scofield/Pat Martino/Bill Connors". It's from the channel Sea of Tranquility and they have review Fusion albums every Friday and they invited as a guest Dani Rabin who is the lower left corner. Well anyway I personally think the "clone" description towards Bill Connors is a bit over blown. I mean he clearly was influenced by Holdsworth but not to the degree in which many say because there is a video titled "Bill Connors 1979 Antibes, France with jan Garbarek" which you can already see Connors use a kind of Legato style 6 years before his controversial 1980s material(1985 was the year of Step it which was the first of 3 albums in this "holdsworthian" style) using technique where he isn't picking with his right hand unlike Holdsworth. Well anyway Connors without a doubt sounded less like Holdsworth in the 1980s than Tim Miller. There is one other guitarist that sounds very much like Holdsworth and that is Nico Stufano. So, I think both Nico Stufano and Tim Miller sound closer to Holdsworth than Bill Connors but yet people described Connors as a Clone of Holdsworth.

    And finally - thank you for the patience in this composition! Nothing is rushed. Everything is perfect. Even the moments of emotionally charged, blazing, intervolic soloing only arrive after easy to understand ideas that are as warm as a heavy blanket - and still every bit as elegant as a complex theory in physics. PS - I'm now into dozens of repetitions into this song. It's a tragedy that this composition won't be recognized by a broad audience as a masterpiece - because on many levels - that is exactly what it is.
