    I don't own one of these yet but I saw in another video that you can increase the torque of the nano motor by simply using a higher voltage supply. USB defaults to 5V but it will go up to 14v apparently (according the manual). No idea what this does to the lifespan of the motor.

    Is there a way to map the throw of a lens' focus range to a wider range of controller wheel motion on the Nano? I'm probably doing the manual calibration wrong (with lenses that don't have hard stops), but I find the focus moves waaaaay too fast over a tiny range of the controller wheel. Any suggestions?

    Does anyone know if the motor is strong enough to drive a gear ring attached to a helical? As in the cheap Chinese helicals you can get to allow focusing lenses that don't have a built-in helical. They tend to be much stiffer than the focusing rings on lenses.

    How does using it with manual lenses (with long focus throw) compare to focusing with AF lenses (with short focus throw)? I'm planning to replace my AF lenses with manual Zeisses and Samyangs (for easier focusing) but perhaps that won't be necessary and buying the Nano could "fix" my current glass.

    Mateusz Pieniążek the throw shouldn’t really matter since the calibration maps the throw of everylens to the full scale of the hand unit. So every lens should require the same amount of movement of the hand wheel from minimum to infinity.

    Great Video Man! I have one question which is not clear for me. The instruction manual said to set the lens for close distance and the knob as well but in that case the direction of the wheel is not good for me. As you said to set the lens to infinity give me the right direction. But I assume it is not the factory standard because infinity should be +9999 instead of +0000. What do you think?

  • @joshuamacdonald8785

    @joshuamacdonald8785

    The speed of the motor is only really affected by the speed of your rotation of the wheel. But the other thing that would affect the apparent speed is the length of the calibration. For example if a lens has a 360 degree throw the motor will have to spin many times to reach the complete range from min to max but another lens that has a 90deg throw or maybe like an iris control for example, the motor would only need to rotate once or so to reach the full range. There is no speed control in that sense it’s just whatever speed is necessary to reach the full length of the range of whatever lens is attached.

    Great review! Two questions: 1) The length of the motor looks kind of short considering 15mm LWS mounting which I suppose is 85mm from the optical center. Maybe I'm wrong, but the baseplate does seem to shorten this distance by some amount. Have you any comparison to a regular 15mm LWS height baseplate? I'm wondering if the motor is actually too short for a setup like this and would call for a top-mounting solution? 2) Does it come with a M6 Screw? The packing list always shows an M6 key, but not a screw? From what I saw the Tilta G2X has an Arri Rosette which is always M6. I'm thinking about combining a handgrip with it to get some sort of WCU-4-like hand unit.

  • @joshuamacdonald8785

    @joshuamacdonald8785

    5 жыл бұрын

    Hey Andreas, yes the motor is quite short and the baseplate is definitely designed to shorten the distance to the motor, not sure of its offset from centre but it's definitely a shorter distance. Top mounting may be a good way to mount for some setups. As for screws, mine came with one m4, and one m6 screw. the m4 is for mounting to the ronin s, and the m6 is for mounting to the supplied Zhyun Crane clamp.

    Joshua, hi! Why did you buy follow focus by Tilta? Why not by dji? Did you use a dji follow focus? =) I want to buy follow focus for my ronin s, but I cannot decide dji or tilta)

    Алексей Леонидович Hey! As I stated in the video, I was sent the Nano to review and did not purchase it myself, that being said I would still have purchased it for my own setup mainly because of the incredible compatibility with the Nucleus M which I also own.

    A question about the mount on the back of the hand unit/knob itself: Is it possible to mount it to something else, say, a handheld monitor or a something to make a larger "handle" on it?

    Deudremont It’s the same process as mounting to the Ronin-S that I outlined in the video. There’s a through-hole for a screw to mount the quick release plate but the included bolt is not 1/4-20 thread which is an issue since most bolts people have lying around aren’t flush enough for the quick release. I believe Tilta will have to make a screw for standard 1/4-20 mounting points, it may not be included in the kit but I’m sure they’ll have to make one, they’ll get too much feedback from people wanting to mount to things for that exact reason.

    @@joshuamacdonald8785 I see. Yeah, it would be great to be able to mount the handheld wheel on other things!

    What happens if you manually calibrated it wrong and have the motor focusing above or below the thresholds? Would it break the lens ridges?

    If you mean on a lens with hard stops, I'd recommend using auto calibration. If you did a manual calibration on a hard stop lens and hit the limit, I can't imagine the motor would not have enough torque to do any damage, or even lift the teeth off the lens, it would just be hard on the motor. If you mean on a lens with no hard stops, then going past the ends would just mean your marks wouldn't be accurate, you could still focus by eye no problem. If you miss the ends during a manual calibration, just start the process again until you get it.
