I just finished reading Johnny Wray's South Sea Vagabonds (1939). He built his own 34 footer and sailed around the south pacific, and it had a tiller. And note, he was only 21 years old at the time! It's a fun read if you have the time.

I have a tiller with a tiller extender so I can man the tiller from anywhere in the cockpit. Really handy little gadget.

Thank you very much for that video. Feel much better about a tiller now.

I had a tiller on my o day 27 and agree 100% with. Loved it and a work of art

I lived onboard a Thunderbird 26(yes it was a tight fit for my 6'1" frame). It had a tiller. I sailed it for pleasure. I crewed on a Beneteau 42 that had a wheel. The difference between the two is night and day. With the tiller it's almost like you can feel the current flowing over the rudder. The wheel feels incredibly disconnected almost like you're playing a video game. Great video!

I have a Pearson Wanderer with wheel. This is my first wheel sailboat. I agree with you 100%. I’m in the process of converting to tiller. The only part I could not find used was the coupler from the rudder shaft to the tiller.

I just bought an Islander 30, but I haven't been able to sail it yet because Maryland has a stay-at-home order & they aren't allowing recreational boating. It has a wheel. I thought I would rather have a tiller, but, considering that I only paid $500 for the boat, I can learn to adapt to the wheel. Thanks for all your videos. You have a lot of valuable information to share.

A lot less to break on a tiller too. I’ve been underway with wheel/quadrant three times and had something go wrong. It was never terribly tragic, but stressful (and expensive) nonetheless

It's also easier to rig up an emergency tiller, as well as do sheet to tiller steering.

Every component has a failure rate. Reduce the number of parts and reliability goes up. Fault finding is easier. Add in all the factors and tiller wins. Also a tiller extension allows steering from just about anywhere in the cockpit/combing.

Id never buy a boat who's wheel was controlled by cables and pulleys. Id only get an Island Packet with rack and pinion.

Interesting. Thanks. Let's be clear, though. A more honest title for your video might have been "Tillers Are Better Than Wheels on Sailboats: Here's Why." This is hardly an unbiased view you have.

Being a dinghy sailor I naturally like the idea of a tiller (I sail solo on the dinghy), but I have found on a yacht with a few in the cockpit that people are always in the way, either of the tiller itself or of the helmsman during tacks & gybes... and I've got the bruised shins to prove it! Depends on how you use it I suppose.

Great video ! Love the helm looks, but tiller has extremely simple design, thus more reliable. Currently sailing swing keel Catalina 22 , but looking for a bigger Coastal/Offshore vessel. Most likely Cape Dory 28, with a tiller ;)

Tiller for me - if I'm tacking a lot takes more space in the cockpit - it's not so fun, especially taking family upwind and have to switch places with someone every tack. Other than that - I'm TeamTiller.

How to fix the looseness in the steering column in a sailboat ( tiller)?

For a small boat a tiller is better. I've seen some Biiiiiiiig boats with huge tillers too! The thing is the autohelm type drives for bigger tillers can become a problem.
