    OK nice job, and good point about making the transition first then terminating at the wall. I did the opposite when I installed laminate floors in my family room, but I was planning to use a custom flat transition, since both my laminate floor and tile are at the same height. Liquid nails is great for permanent install in some applications. I used this in my custom laminate stairs that have zero edge metal or corner molding, in other words clean flush edge corners, using same laminate flooring with modified T-Molding as the edge, save me lot of money in laminate dedicated stairs from manufacturer and, they have held solid at the beveled edges, through several years now. Dude, drinking beer on the job? 😉. Once I had a cement work job done, by an installer who was inebriated and he messed up a section of my stamp cement work, I noticed this by the smell on the installer's breath, pure alcohol. Luckily if I did not point the error, on the cement work, you would not know it, so I let it go because it would have been more effort to fix it. I did mention this privately to the installer and told him to be coconscious next time as this can hinder the precision of the work, prosperity of him as an installer and the company that hired him. I told him I would not tell his boss and I kept my word. He came to me after the job and apologized and thanked me for keeping it simple and private. No names mentioned so this is just a small but important detail to keep in mind. Alcohol, even 5% in some of the fruity drinks can impair one's judgement and precision of work. When a person learns that one's mind and body are the result of what we eat and feed into these, we begin to understand the importance of keeping both like a Ferrari. High octane foods only and lots of water, to flush the impurities, works wonders and avoid potential health issues, as we get older.

    To this day the transition that is done in this video looks the same as it was when the video was shot. No issues. I do however have a very high traffic area in another room where the the adhesion from the sub floor to flooring has broke, which has caused up and down movement in a small area, and a crack in the grout. I notice it, only because i did the work, you have to be extremely nit picky to even notice it or care for it. it is also repairable if push comes to shove.. as far as grout brands. in my opinion i would view it more as preferences vs actual advantages from one to the next. The most important part of all of this is to make sure that the flooring edges are adhered very well to the sub floor. As long as there is no movement of the floor, i don't see any reason that either brand is better then the other. cheers!

    You mentioned the flexible underlayment. Did you glue the first strip directly to hard surface or is it still on the underlayment? If it is on the underlayment then won't you still get movement and cracking of the grout or, did I miss something?

  • @SebastianBalos

    @SebastianBalos

    3 жыл бұрын

    i left a gap between the tile and the underlay. that gap was for the glue to directly attach to the wood. So its wood glued to concrete, and the underlay starts a few inches later.

  • @SebastianBalos

    Generally speaking, if your flooring material needs to be nailed in, then you should have plywood under it. If its snap in/floating, then a underlay/vapor barrier is enough. For the best answer, contact the manufacturer of the flooring for advice.

    James Guan hey James, to this day the floor and grout are still fine. There is one very heavy traffic area into my office where the grout has cracked but its only noticeable if you are really trying to find it. And it can be repaired as well, which i do r plan on doing at this time. With regards to the expansion gap. Every edge except for the grout edge is free to expand. So there is some breathing room. Also note that warm climate areas may not have this issue. Here in florida its common to glue the entire floor down to the concrete slab. Good luck!

    Expansion is not an issue. I used this method years ago and found it to be very sufficient. The look is a lot cleaner and I had no issues. Homes are kept within a pretty small temperature range so drastic expansions and contractions are minimal. Worst case scenario... you use transition strips if this method fails for you. Not a major expense or use of time.

    There are arguments that the floors need to settle. Depending on flooring type. i can only speak on the flooring in this video and say that 2 years later the grout line still looks the same as it did in the video. Personally i don't like the "silicon" style of grouts, they tend to sink/cave when they dry, and also dust tends to stick to them. Its not uncommon to completely glue down flooring, just google "gluing hardwood flooring". i don't recommend doing it tho, its a painful process.

  • @SebastianBalos

    Although the first row is glued and butted up to the tile with no expansion space. The rest of the flooring is free floating with expansion spaces at walls. The idea is to not have the wood move on the first row where the grout line is, but it is free to do so everywhere else. Since i have a almost pie shape tile line, i do have some concern of this being a issue, but thus far this has not been an issue. Mined you i live in Florida where the climate is pretty consistent.

    Very nice work, but you wasted money on the green tape..... plain old masking tape would have worked the same.... js.......... again, nice work.....

    buy a expensive finishing saw blade. i use a Diablo 80 tooth. then put painters tape on flooring where you will do the cuts to keep the saw from scratching. saw blade is key. cheers!

    A lot of people worried about expansion and contraction. You could always use same colored silicone instead of grout, would allow for a little bit of movement, but being in a climate controlled home, humidity levels aren't as drastic as they are outside. May depend on where you live as well.

    Didn’t use any transitions. The title should just be how to install hard wood floors.
