Australia unfortunately have their laws out on this species. The US encourages catch and eat for Tilapia and they brought the numbers down considerably. There is no motivation to target the species. I fish in that same dam in Gold Coast as well as many others and Tilapia are everywhere. When I ask locals about fishing for Tilapia, they will say its too risky with the high fines. In South Africa we used to catch and eat them. Most delicious fresh water fish I have tasted. If more people knew this and were allowed to eat them the numbers would drop quickly. The solution is education on proper disposal of waste and there will be Tilapia on every BBQ every weekend.

They grow big. My pb a 2.8kg but biggest I've seen caught is just under 5kg

Wow, you're going bananas? LoL. Actually, here many people put banana essence on soft green algae to catch countless tilapia...so bananas aren't considered bad luck in fishing here, instead it was a good luck. There are other similarly silly superstitions here though... 😅😅😅
