At any rate: No, I'm neither of those things I'm just someone who believes in freedom of choice and rule of law. The French constitution grants freedom of religion. If the French government wanted to go full secular why aren't they targeting ALL religious garments? (crosses for christians, kippas for jews, turbants for Sikhs and so on). Think about it this way. What do you think the veil ban is gonna accomplish? Do you really believe that the muslim population would be like "oh, guess we have to get our wives/daughters/mothers to walk on the streets in miniskirts now". No. What is really gonna happen is that the political turmoil generated by this will drive an even bigger wedge between "true" frenchmen and "other" frenchmen of muslim faith. Giving more ammo to the violent extremists coopting Islam to spread hate and division. Basically the very thing this move is trying to prevent, the spread of extremism.

It allows people that don’t want to be surrounded by religious ideals to live without such ideas. There are plenty of places that do allow, and even recommend burqas as such, people can always move there if that’s it truly a huge concern for them. The Chant of the French Revolution was liberty equality fraternity. But also laïcité meaning secularism. No one can wear religious symbols in schools or as Public servants or in governmental places. they literally turned all the churches into temples of wisdom after the revolution. You also pretty much couldn’t work in academia as a Catholic until recently. Being secular is a core value of France, France isn’t America. Yeah it would be hypocritical to do this ban in the United States but in France it makes sense. They aren’t like Americans. immigrants are accepted from all countries and races but when you come to France you are expected to adopt the culture. Is it Islamphobic , probably but it stems from just being anti religion. France could change their culture but they view liberty as being free from religion. No gods No masters type of ideology. (Update ) I’m not saying this is good or bad it’s just the ideology of France. I was basically just saying it’s consistent with what French people have historically believed. Hate crimes targeting Christians in Germany have nearly trebled in a year amid a wave of religious discrimination across Europe. From 2019 to 2020, the majority Christian nation saw a rise in attacks from 57 to 141. This included seven physical assaults against Christians for their beliefs, three thefts or robberies, one desecration of a grave and 24 verbal threats. Overall, hate crime in Germany rose by 19 per cent last year. The Vienna-based Observatory on Intolerance against Christians in Europe (OIDAC), which has compiled a report on anti-Christian hate crime in the continent, says the two main threats come from 'secular intolerance' and 'Islamic oppression'. Non-French people don’t know that the modern French culture of post-revolutionary French Empire puts a big emphasis on Freedom *From* Religion and not Freedom of Religion like here in the US. That means the public shouldn’t be bother by or interact with religion if they don’t want to. This resulted in the French government increasingly becoming hyper-secular like banning all religious clothing or symbols from being shown in schools, government jobs, or certain public places. The fear of religious institutions comes from the traumatic experiences before the revolution where the Catholic Church collaborated with French nobles to prevent a constitutional monarchy from being established. The recent targeting on a flat out banning Islamic female clothing in public comes from frustration of the Muslim migrants that want to retain their religion and wear it in public. The French government supports this ban under the guise of Feminism where there were real cases of Muslim women being unable to leave their home if they are unable to wear a hijab or burka, but that’s a dishonest reasoning for it. There was also a survey indicating that 1 in 5 people in France wouldn’t trust living next to a person of a different race along with lingering Jewish mistrust. I personally think this outrageous new law is the French government thinking that they can break Islam to submission to the French state much as how they successfully done to the Catholic Church.

    According to some hard-left French media, their President Emmanuel Macron is losing support from the far-right voters dramatically, and so as a last-ditch effort he came up with this little thingie to boost up his poll numbers. Keep in mind majority of the local votes from the rural areas in France come from the Conservatives, not Centrists or Liberals (moreover Centrists don't even exist in France). It's like a Georgia situation there. Also, Macron is using the Brexit situation cleverly to shift all the focus on himself so he gets all the credit at European Union from COVID management to the migrant crisis, as Britain and France have their own century-old rivalries following the Colonial Era.

    This is happening in Quebec, Canada as well. In 2019 the provincial government passed bill 21, which is referred to as a 'secularism bill'. It bans all religious symbols in government jobs. Teachers, politicians, public servants and persons filling other government roles are now banned from wearing crosses, turbans, hijabs, niquabs, etc. One of the arguments for this is that women wearing hijab and other Muslim dress are not doing so out of choice, that they are being victimized. The Chant of the French Revolution was liberty equality fraternity. But also laïcité meaning secularism. No one can wear religious symbols in schools or as Public servants or in governmental places. It’s nothing personal they literally turned all the churches into temples of wisdom after the revolution.

    Think Muslims around the world don’t understand difference between anarchy and democracy. Democracy is not a promise of ultimate freedom! There are still laws, rules, customs, cultural norms etc that are mandatory and reinforced by law! So if any democratic state passes a certain law it still needs to me followed, especially if majority of nation is supporting it.

    @Focused Studying people have a right to practice any religion and that is by all means considered as part of democratic values. However, showcasing and promoting religion and religious symbols publicly and thought dress code is not part of western values and it’s forbidden by law in certain countries. However, western world is big, so there are many other countries that, although share this point of view socially and culturally, do not have particular laws about it. So it’s on individual to adapt or to find a country with same values.

  • @missanajit

    @missanajit

    3 жыл бұрын

    @Focused Studying not sure why are you always mentioning Christians and Muslims. French Christians themselves are not allowed to promote their religion either, which is clearly against Bible and it’s teachings. Decision is not drawn from religious standpoint, rather than how the county and its society is managed. If government and society do not want people publicly wearing crosses, hijabs, turbans, kippahs etc, and they pass the law to reinforce this decision then there is nothing dangerous about it and has nothing to do with targeting Islam. Rules are same for everyone. Nobody is keeping anyone hostage, if core believes of individuals are against certain culture and it’s values, then they need to take responsibility for themselves and find a society that does support their lifestyle and believes. World is a big place, no need to get iffy.

    @Focused Studying it’s not naive. The issue is only Muslims are taking this personally. Jews, Hindus, Buddhists, Christians do understand that this is how France as secular country runs. But for some reason Muslims cannot rap their head around this very simple concept.

    @Focused Studying you’re taking a bit of a fatalistic approach here. All countries dictate what you can and cannot wear! For example you are not allowed to wear a bikini in public transport, you are not allowed to go to certain institution without formal outfit, you are not allowed to wear clothes in nudist beach, you are not allowed to wear hat and sunglasses indoor etc. That doesn’t sound authoritarian to me, it’s just law and order.
