They didn't exist before the internet, the internet caused this along with hipsterism. Smart phones brought the net to the masses in the late 2000's. People realized how uninteresting they all were which caused mass depression in your average middle of the pack young person. This then caused a desperate arms race to seem unique and interesting. It's started with tattoos and thrift store fashion, eventually that got old and the next generation said "hold my beer." Not sure what's coming next but god damn this is entertaining

It's the inevitable outcome of telling children they're special, unique and wonderful even when they're not.

The nice thing about face ink, is it makes it easy to identify the lunatics, without having to actually talk to them, and thus suffer from listening to their insanity.

I'm in a theater group and improv group, and I'm around the pronoun/gender people all the time. They only hang out with people with the exact same mentality, and that's because regular people get annoyed having to keep listening to complaints about gender. I love acting and performing so I tolerate it, but it does get pretty goofy when they need to spend 20 minutes telling people their gender. Just tell me your damn name and I'll call you that.

As the war progressed and casualties increased, there were infantry companies that had senior NCOs who were still teenagers. They all took the ball and ran with it and did what was required of them so, yep, a friggin 19 year old First Sergeant! Ordinarily, a 1SG is twice that age with 20+ years in the Army!

He noted that even in the 50s, culture had begun to shift from celebrating the individual and their achievements in favor of the masses and their perceived flaws. A man who has achieved must prove each day that he is as good as he was, but when you give someone a problem, they're fixed so to speak, for life. Mass media has compounded this. And it gets worse with each major communications innovation because as you said, it gives the lowest common denominator of every group a platform. Also, I used to do this kind of stuff when I played Dungeons and Dragons when I was making a statistics sheet for my character in the game. The difference of course is that I could remove myself from my player character, and go live in the real world, with other real people, with a real life and real jobs.
