He or she is dead. You also don't apply CPR in a bed. What do you think is harder? A person's ribcage or a hospital mattress? You don't apply CPR in bed. You're just pushing the patient into the mattress, not actually helping him.

While it's possible that rib breaking can occur, the most important thing is saving the person's life, not worrying about breaking a few ribs.
