Rhythmic Analysis: While 'Levitation 21' was all about the number 21, 'New Maps' is all about the number 20 - Every line of music adds up to 20 quavers. This opening section is pretty standard Tigran: -0:00: rhythm for each line is, in semiquavers, (6,6,6,4,6,6,6). I decided to split it into a 9/8 bar and a 11/8 bar. -0:42: 8 groups of 5. Nothing too complex. -1:03: Here, Tigran combines the rhythm and material of the opening two sections. I have decided to notate the upper line in different time signatures to make this clear. Something Tigran uses quite often in this piece (and Levitation 21) is 'displacing' melodic lines by a certain amount. At 1:45 Tigran gradually does this quite ingeniously. The first line is as you would expect - however, after the flourish at the end of the line, the following line (1:50) starts a quaver later, shrinking the first rhythmic group as a result. The rest of the line is still pretty regular, though. The following line is where the displacement happens (1:55): If you look at the lowest notes - the C#, E and F - they all occur a quaver later than the beginning of the rhythmic groups - remember, we are still in 8 groups of 5. When the drums come in at 2:05 we are well and truly in this displaced time. The rhythm returns to normal at 2:25 after what seems to be an uncomfortable gap, since Tigran has had to remove the first beat of the riff in order to 'un-displace' the rhythm. Some more subdivisions: -2:55: although I have decided to notate this section in 8 groups of 5 because of the drums, the rhythm in the piano can be thought of as (5,5,7,5,4,6,4,4) -3:14: Each bar becomes (5,4,3,4,4) Another instance of displacement occurs occurs at 4:15. Although the melody stays the same, the bass line and harmony is delayed by a crotchet. To add further to the confusion, Arthur begins each of the following lines with rhythmic patterns that should, in fact, end the phrase. The really interesting part begins at 4:55. Although this is still 8 groups of 5, Tigran hints at an upcoming rhythm with the placement of the top Cs: (7,7,6). This is reinforced at 5:05 and 5:12, where we don't get the exact rhythm - instead we get the rhythm backwards. The regular cymbal hits should be noted for the next section at 5:25. This is the really ingenious bit, where Tigran brings in the (7,7,6) rhythm hinted before but it comes in a semiquaver early, beginning on the second group of 7. On top of this, Arthur somehow manages to play the previous cymbal hits (in 8 groups of 5) in the original time: This is why the cymbal and snare hits sound a bit off. In order to keep the score clean, I have decided to remove a semiquaver from the first bar and add it on to the last (6:02).

My opinion as a percussionist/rhythm section person: the jam section starting at 5:25 should basically be counted as 4/4 maintaining the quintuplet subdivision (so stay in 20/16). The rhythmic pulses are kept by the cymbals, bassdrum, and snare drum on the backbeat. The biggest evidence for this is how the pulses are foreshadowed all throughout the previous section and are emphasized starting 5:20 by the unison hits. This fits with how Tigran usually does breakdown sections and is taken straight from metal music (see: Meshuggah) where the drums keep 4/4 time and the band "hits" follow some other more interesting rhythm. Like happens in the verses on Levitation 21, the first quarter note (I'm American so I think I mean a crotchet?) is basically silent from the group. The first band "hit" is actually on the second semiquaver, right after the snare hits on the (2) of a bar of 4/4. Tigran does this all the time, having the dominant rhythm hit immediately after a downbeat. This way, you don't have to cut a semiquaver off of a bar. And it's easier to headbang to.

A 380 second piece transcribed in 720 minutes, so that's just a tad under 2 minutes per second. Given the complexity of the music, and the fact that you transcribe the drums, too, I'd say that's amazing.

@@HanZhao Well, Tigran is playing about 300 notes/second, so there's that. Have you ever considered transcribing Keith Emerson's The Three Fates? You'd have more than a day. There is a transcription of Lachesis (Kenny Floyd, RIP, I believe or there may just be Emerson's score, which isn't published), but to my knowledge not of Clotho or Atropos. And Atropos, for three pianos simultaneously, well, that would be something else.

5:24 WTF HOW DO I EVEN CONCEPTUALISE THIS DJENT ALL I WANT IS TO HEADBANG IN TIME I fully expected the crash cymbals to fall neatly at the barline but most are a semiquaver off. Could I understand the relationship between kick, snare and crash as merely grace notes or is this another oppenheimer-level division of 20 that gives the illusion of a 4/4 beat?
