Writer-director Issa López’s highly anticipated horror-fantasy film Tigers Are Not Afraid will get a Toronto-exclusive theatrical run at TIFF Bell Lightbox starting Friday, August 23.

Guillermo del Toro was born in Guadalajara, Mexico, where he studied at the Centro de Investigación y Estudios Cinematográficos. His features include the Festival selections Cronos (93), The Devil's Backbone (01), and Pan's Labyrinth (06), for which he received an Oscar nomination for screenwriting. Additional credits include Hellboy (04), Pacific Rim (13), and Crimson Peak (15). The Shape of Water (17) is his latest film.
Issa López is a Mexican writer and director. She has won several literary awards, including the National Novel Award granted by Mexico’s Institute of Fine Arts and Literature. She has written multiple TV shows and 11 feature films, two of which she directed: Efectos Secundarios (06) and Casi Divas (08). Her third feature, Tigers Are Not Afraid (17), premiered at Fantastic Fest, where it won the Best Horror Director Award. In Mexico, the film won three Diosas de Plata and two Ariel Awards.

I love how Issa was creating, building, reevaluating, and recreating through the entire filmmaking process, which contributed to the essence and texture of Tigers. As much as I really liked Night Country, I imagine that there was much less freedom to do this and I'm so curious what could have been if it was instead a standalone film or miniseries free from the restrictions of a major franchise. At the same time, it's so important that the crisis of missing and murdered indigenous women (MMIW) and girls is given a spotlight in a major franchise like True Detective. Bravo to Issa López and crew and congratulations on being brought back for season 5!

Guillermo del toro buen director? creo que ustedes vieron una versión diferente de shape of water, en la version que yo vi, se robo descaradamente Abe Sapiens y la trama es insufrible. El oscar? no me extraña que hollywood este en decadencia si premia pelílculas tan malas y todos los borregos aplauden cuando les dicen que aplaudan. Si voy a ver los "Tigres no tienen miedo", espero que la directora Issa Lopez no recorra los mismos caminos que del toro-cuaron-iñarritu. Si termina ganando un oscar la perdimos. Mmm pues cada quien su percepción de las cosas, mi punto de vista es que si te cuelgas de las ideas de los demás, ¿que vales? Ejemplo, hugo sanchez, el fue uno de los atletas más importantes de méxico y lo ¿celebramos?, al contrario en todos lados he escuchado que es un sangron, que es pesado, etc. El si es un mexicano que vale, Obvio del toro tiene su valor, como todos, pero que lo celebren y lo premien con los dos premios más importantes del cine ¡¿¿¿¿??!! Pues no estoy de acuerdo, pero ahí estan los borregos aplaudiendo. Pues aplaudan.
