    Tiger getting all technical and precise in his pre-shot routine and blasts it 350.. John Daly shotguns a beer in the bathroom, goes to the teebox and takes a puff off a smoke, scratches his balls and rips it 15 yards past Tiger (365 fairway) haha 💯

    John Daly had the talent to be one of the greatest golfers of all time. If he would've taken the game more serious and purely focused on golf, he would've been one of the game's greatest of all time. Still, even after 20 years since his last major win he's one of the most popular golfers in the world. Long live the legend that is John Daly.

    one could argue that if John Daly wasn't the person he was he wouldn't be the golfer he was. Perhaps if he took it to serious he would have wrecked his swing or game trying to perfect it. I'm just saying imo a lot of these guys are as good as they are because of who they are and how they think. whether it be mechanical or self destructive.

    Probably the reason Tiger has won more major championships than John Daley. Championships are usually won or lost on the green, and being able to out drive your competitor, does not always guarantee success. The great German golfer, Bernhard Langer, has written two highly successful and influential books, just on green technique and analysing your swing and putting on the green. You have to remain competitive, and in contention in the tournaments you enter, and few golfers have been as dominant as TW, when he was winning major after major.

    This short video wraps up PGA golf at that time nicely. During the intro for the playoff after the commercial break, they showed a montouge of Tiger and Daly that day set to Lincoln Park/Jay Z "Numb/Encore." Jay Z! At a PGA tournament! It was too cool. The technology was exploding faster than the courses or rules could keep up with. "Bomb and gouge" was the dominating playing style. Players were aiming at new landing zones that the architects hadn't dreamed were reachable from the tee, and if they missed the fairway, the combo of the new urethane covered balls and super aggressively grooved wedges meant they could still throw darts into the green. What a time to be a 17 year old high school golfer. This was the closest to "Rock stars" golfers ever have been. They sure were to me.

  • @TheLocalLt

    @TheLocalLt

    3 жыл бұрын

    Yeah golf was certainly at a high point. There was another element, which was that only a handful of guys, the so called “big 4”/“big 5”, were actually playing that playstyle. Everyone else was still playing 90s golf, while Tiger, Phil, Vijay, Ernie, and at times Retief had another gear that nobody else on tour could reach. At first only Tiger had this gear, but after Tiger’s very rough 2004 combined with Phil, Ernie and Vijay’s extremely strong 2004, this made the 2005-2008 “big 5” period maybe the most entertaining stretch of golf to watch

    I was greenside watching it live! Was fortunate enough to have a one-on-one conversation with Tiger on Saturday & told him I'll be back on Sunday to watch him win. I climbed a tree to see him win in the playoff. Unforgettable! I feel fortunate to have been able to watch him live at a couple different majors & WGC events, while he was still number one in the world & in his prime. It's like being able to say that you watched Jordan play live.

    John Daly is one of the few (if only) people I can imagine that could have the gallery pulling for him over tiger. It’s weird when I think about it, but if tigers in a sudden death playoff with anyone else, I’d pull for tiger...but John “wild thing” Daly is someone they may get me to switch haha

    I try to take up his natural approach, particularly on the green, I can't remember the last time I squated to read a putt. A few weeks ago I hit 32 putts and felt amazing, this week I hit 42 😦 Still buried a 30 footer from the fringe while mid conversation as a played through a 4-some, ironically I was saying how I was putting like shit, "despite what just happened there" as the ball tumbled in the cup. Golf.
