TIG Welding Stainless Steel: A Beginner's Guide

Learn the basics of welding Stainless Steel!
First we learn an easy way to identify if our part is stainless steel or mild steel. Once you know what your part is, you need to choose the correct filler metal. To do this, you can download the filler metal selection chart by following the link above.
The Welding:
In this episode, you will see the difference it makes in Stainless when purging from the backside. We will run two samples, one without purge gas and one with purge gas.

    Loved the video. As an hvac guy needing to weld stainless, not having a y for backing gas for my project, I was looking to see if anyone had tried nitrogen as a purge/backing gas on stainless. I found a wonderful article from the AWS including chemical analysis and and for using nitrogen as a purge gas for welding 316 austentic stainless pipe. Upshot was results were within tolerance. I think that if you would be interested, this may be an interesting alternative to argon. As my argon fills run 4x what the nitrogen fills run, andcwe are considering bringing in a ln2 dwyer in because of the cleaner cuts in stainless with dry nitrogen, it is an interesting alternative as a purge gas for stainless. It is what we were trained to use for R410 line sets when installing equipment on site. I can forward aws article if you would like

    I though that it was bad if the bead turned a dull grey color like that, that means that the metal is getting too hot and oxidizing the air. Shouldn't you have pulsed your amperage or increased your travel speed?

    Mr.TIG is wrong about why 304 stainless is not magnetic. 304 stainless is not magnetic, because it contains about 8% nickle in its compostition, not because it contains chromium. As an example, 430 stainless has chromium content, and is magnetic, so if you use the magnet test, 430 will stick to the magnet, which means you could be welding 430 stainless. Just thought I would mention it.

    300 series are non magnetic in the annealed state. Cold work from bending, stamping or otherwise deforming causes it to become magnetic. This applies to all 300 series.

    304 is magnetic, but usually not responsive to common magnets. I use Neodymium magnets to help hold my 303 and 304 stainless projects together on some homemade spanner type clamps that I use.

    2 years too late, but turns out you can apparently lol...saw it in another dudes vid, i think they called it "solarflux" or something like that, you pretty much paint in on the backside and leave it to dry, though it does make me wonder if it could contaminate the weld...i'd probably just purge instead but finding the setup/equipment for it is a pain since most major hardware stores near me seem to only sell the bare minimum welding supplies lol..gotta be an online or specialty welding shop job...

    Some comments below make me think if these people ever passed 5th grade. Dropped out of school and then saw this video to make dumb comments. Get a magnet and test it your self. You can make SS magnetic by pounding it but it will never be like regular low alloy ferrous metals. There is magnetic attraction but its obvious how strong the metal pulls or how weak it is. You are the judge !!

    Simply using a magnet to tell if it's stainless steel is misleading. The most common SS will not stick to a common magnet; however, there are many varieties of SS that will stick to a magnet (some will actually rust a bit). As an inspector in a metal industry for nearly 50 years, the most economical way to tell, if you at least think it's some type of SS, is a comparison method. Use the magnet on a known magnetic material such as an iron part or a crescent wrench, screw driver, common angle iron. FEEL the pull force on it then FEEL the pull force on what you think may be SS. If it's SS and sticks, the force will be much lower, there will be no doubt.

    Back purging is when you keep a steady flow of argon on the back side of the area where you are welding. Example: When welding pipe, you add an additional argon line to the inside of the pipe. One end gets capped. This prevents your welds from looking shitty like this clowns. Check out Justin on the fabrication series or Jody on Welding Tips and Tricks.

    There are many welding schools throughout the country, just do an online search. In my opinion if you really wanna become a good welder you need to go to school and then find a good experienced welder that is willing to take you under his wing as an apprentice, even if you have to buy him lunch every day and polish his shoes. If you do this and you pay attention in about four or five years you should be a decent welder and the rest is up to you.

    good video, but that's not how to weld stainless, to make a good stainless weld one should provide a much better argon shielding (or Ar+H2 shielding) either from the torch and from the backside of the weld, or should have to increase the welding speed a good stainless weld is colorful, and here we got it gray - that will affect the weld performance

    This dude really was a proper plonker. Typical salesman without much experience other than simple demonstrations. Hence why at any point there was anything that couldnt be turned and moved so it was all welded flat, little bit at a time there was somebody else doing the demonstration, ie Bob Moffat. Well he definitely demonstrated how to cook the chromium content out of that stainless😄😄 If he knew what he was talking about he would know that with stainless you use enough amperage to get the puddle going quickly, then keep a consistent, quick travel speed to keep heat input down and a nice few seconds downslope. No need for a footpedal what so ever, being able to lower the amps and slow down simply compounds the problem with heat input.

  • @miguellibanio8392
    @miguellibanio83923 жыл бұрын

    His advices may be good for beginners but his welds aren’t a good example to follow. His welds have too much heat input, your filler must be in the shielding gas area at all times(otherwise it will contaminate your weld). Again, he does give some good tips but the welding itself isn’t that good. And, as many users have said, there are magnetic stainless steels.
