Tie This Pheasant Tail Variant | The Diablo Rojo

Спорт

If you ever visit Argentina's Lago Stroble, A.K.A. Jurassic Lake, make sure you have a few of these Pheasant Tail variants in your fly box. Lago Strobel's trophy rainbow trout love red fly patterns such as the Diablo Rojo.

Hey Philip - Martin and Lucho sent me the link to your video of the Diablo Rojo . Unfortunately I am the culprit for this one- started tying it and avidly sharing them around about 3 years ago . Glad it is being noticed as it is a great fly for there. I have also used them in other places . You did a great job with the copy . I tend to use Flunky Bob UV under the wire and use 3X heavy Mustad S82 hooks . Thanksfor sharing this. I started teaching myself to tie flies when retirement was on the horizon. The first Diablo Rojo was tried at Strobel in 2019 ..they really love them when they have been beaten up a bit . Think my record is 5 on the same fly. I watched a number of your videos as I learned - so thanks for that. I am hoping this great fly gets tied and used around the world - it deserves to be !

Hi Gary, thanks for taking the time to comment and for creating this great fly. Martin had provided me with a couple during my last trip and then sent me an image that I used to base this video on. I did a few twists based on how I tied Pheasant Tails and similar patterns. Thanks again for your creation. From the feedback I have been receiving, your Diablo Rojo will be in a few fly boxes this upcoming season in a few sizes. Cheers, Phil

No reason a tiger wouldn’t like it or a brown or rainbow for that matter. There are more patterns coming too. 👍😃 Cheers, Phil

Nice tie Phil. I see a little of Higas sos in that fly. The hareline black peacock ice dub is magical stuff.

Thanks. Yes you could say there is a bit of any fly in every pattern these days. This Pheasant Tail variant was introduced to my guide in Argentina from some South African clients that were there before me. Cheers Phil.

I bet the Cuttrhoat would be very interested in this pattern. Time for a field trial on the Fraser.

THis is IDENTICAL to a fly in the umpqua family of flies tied by a friend who works at Fly Fish Food.

Hi, As I mentioned both in the intro and in the description of this video. I was first introduced to this Pheasant Tail Nymph variation by the Head Guide I fished with in Argentina last year (2022). One of his clients from South Africa, Gary Hughes, first introduced it to him. I am friends with most if not all of the gang at Fly Fish Food. I know Lance and Brandon are with Umpqua but didn’t see any fly of theirs that resembled this pattern? As a contract tyer myself, I won’t want to take away from someone else’s fly. Cheers, Phil.

Nice looking fly! Do you think it would work better than a traditional PT as a mayfly nymph in smaller sizes, say 14 - 18?

Thanks John, There is no reason why not in certain situations. I have done well with dark, almost black, Diawl Bach’s when trout are feeding on Callibaetis nymphs. Cheers, Phil

Thanks. I haven’t tried it yet. I was only introduced to this fly during my last trip to Argentina this past October. By the time I got back to Alberta the lakes were frozen. There will be a few of them in my fly box ready for spring. 😀 Cheers Phil.

Hi Greg. It should work well. I often use dark or black nymphs when trout are feeding on Callibaetis nymphs even though the natural nymphs are much lighter. Cheers Phil

Phil, the Spanish word for red is Rojo, not Roho. The j is pronounced like an h, and h in spanish is most often silent.

My apologies. Just a typo in the pattern title that has now been fixed. I spelt it correctly in the thumbnail. 😃 Cheers, Phil
