Ye a bit different. Can't remember how I thought of tying in the garden. Justin and myself have been busy working on a few new patterns. And doing our best to keep them simple. You will see the first one soon, as I take you on the water with me for its first trip. We are fishing for resident fish, as the water has not been stocked for over three weeks. And the conditions are flat water and sun. So it will be a challenge. How the pattern gets on you will have to wait and see. Thanks for the comment Charlie. Take care mate. Shaun.

What!! in my Garden. Your more than welcome, but I think in the house is really better. So many people say how nice it must be to do your own fly and then catch on it. This is a simple fly and it catches a lot of fish. So with a few ideas on how. maybe. Thanks Anthony, glad you commented. Happy Christmas mate. Shaun.

Hi Shaun, I commented initially when you put this video up that I would give it a go as a new to fly tying. Made half a dozen in the comfort of my home and fished them this week on my local lake. Amazing takes, after a few hours, bag limit of three trout. Largest just over 3 lb, total weight 9 lb 4oz. A gentleman next to me struggling so gave him one to try. Second cast and he was in. Very satisfying!! So looking forward to more of your videos. Thank you for sharing….

Absolutely fab. I have had a lot of fish on this pattern. It is obviously a remake of the app of peters. But I think the app was only half done. Great attractor, but limited. Shorter legs means less plucking by the fish. Add weight means we can fish more ways on a floating line. Which every body owns. Just think about the pattern in the water and how it can be presented. The best patterns are so simple. A few of my latest ones are on a size 16 and 14, dry hooks. A small amount of squirrel or hairs ear, fine wire to hold it together. It is just a small amount of fluff on a hook. keep it sparse. On the water just put a little bit of jink on to hold it up a bit and slow it down. Oh when putting jink on, allow it to dry for a while before going into the water. works a lot better. Not sure jink is the proper name. Floating stuff. Brain block mate. Latest video gives you a bit of an idea. But I am getting a load of tricky fish with this.

It is really worth doing Mike. Keep it in the fly box, as its not just me that catches on this. The great thing is that with the bead you can do so much more with it. If there are fresh stock fish they will normally be higher in the water. So you will move it a bit faster, or even real fast. The bead helps keep it down a bit. If the fish are on a certain level more consistently try slow intermediate. Long tippet when they are down and tricky, with the floater you will be able to fish it dead slow. The length of leg is worth trying things out. We have found a bit shorter is better. Long gives lots of movement, but not hook ups. Long fished fast gives more of a quiver trail. Short is more of a flick action. Fished dead slow on the bottom will still have movement. When fishing dead slow all we do is keep the line tight and hardly retrieve. If the line has tension, what ever you have on the end is fishing great. Have a great Christmas Mike. Shaun. Oh and don't worry if the pattern turns out a bit scruffy. And don't worry about putting the cotton on evenly. I have done then as rough as you like and it makes no difference.

I have heard Ellerdine has been fishing well. Mind that was following a good stocking. For finding the fish there the larger patterns are going to work well, due to the water. Lures are slowly coming into there own now. I know a few waters have been slow on the lures. But we have noticed more fish lately coming out with lures. The red wriggly thing is a pattern I put on if I am finding it difficult. Does not work every time, but it has a great track record. Just remember before giving any pattern up make sure you have fished it well. Like every retrieve and speed regardless of what you have on. Good luck for the new year Sam. And who know we may meet up at Ellerdine some day. Happy Christmas Sam. Shaun.

The apps is a good pattern. But add this bead to it as I have done, oh and shorten the legs. That means less plucking from the fish. Then this pattern can be fished really well on a floater. A longer tippet gives you more choice of presentation. As in the video. I have had a lot of fish with this through out the year. fished fast or slow. I can not remember if he had any fish. But I am certain if he fishes that pattern often he will work out how to fish it and catch plenty. Thanks for the comment James. Take care mate. Shaun.

Have been tying flies for years now Cameron, and all done on the cheapest vice out there. So long as the hook is secure. I have splashed out recently, and upgraded the vice for one that swivels. About £80. The end result of the fly does not need be perfect. Actually the killer fly is normally hammered and falling apart from all the fish hitting it. I quite like scruffy. Take care Cameron and have a great Christmas. Shaun.

  • @shaunfishes101

Sorry Byron I did miss this comment. Its definitely the floater. This pattern was made for the floater. I never fished much with an apps. But one of the boys was on the water one day with the apps. When I looked at it and seen how he fished it. It took me about 5 seconds to see it needed a bead. This means we can fish it with the floater. And as most of us fish the floater, it was just a matter of making the pattern more versatile. On the floater when stripping fast the bead helps keep it down that little bit. Floater with longer tippet enables us to get to depths quite quick. So much more can be achieved with the floater. And that goes for most patterns really. Sorry for the delay Byron. Shaun.
