Tidal Twister (Off-ride and HD POV) - SeaWorld San Diego

Tidal Twister is a brand new ride concept from Skyline Attractions and opened on 24 May 2019 at SeaWorld San Diego in California. Chris Gray from Skyline describes this design as a 'flat ride', although RCDB lists it as a powered roller coaster.
Video features off-ride footage of Tidal Twister in action, plus an on-ride POV filmed by my good friend Jim Guy.

    Having a better look at this David encouraged me to change my decision. It does not look like a coaster to me. I always thought that roller coasters were named because they coasts around the track. This one looks more like a Himalaya ride. Excellent footage ~ Rob/Boston

    The drive mechanism and controls are similar to those of a pirate ship swing. Tires mounted on electric motors run against curved plates on the trains. The tilt mechanism at the stations, though, is very complex. The train has to be rolled to exactly the right spot, the cars unlocked from the undercarriage, and then hydraulic rams need to level the cars while those blue shields come up to prevent people from falling out the side opposite the station.

    this brings up a good issue in the coaster community. What About hybrids? Technically I would think a coaster like gemini or excalibur should be considered a steel coaster. cyclone at coney island is a wood coaster. I think the structure material should not dictate that. but maybe this could be considered a coaster.

  • @davidjellis

    @davidjellis

    The coaster class (wood or steel) is generally judged by the track and not the supports (which is why Gemini at Cedar Point and Excalibur at Valleyfair! are steel coasters and why Coney Island Cyclone is a woodie despite having steel supports) however they all coast under gravity - this is powered all the way around so doesn't 'coast' which is why I wouldn't count it.

    Even if it was a coaster it is powered all the way around so I wouldn't count it anyway - the designer Chris Gray sees it as a 'coaster-like' flat ride...I think that works!

    Turns out, the problem was with the drive units. They were off the shelf, and designed for use in a different position. Rain water got into them, and caused them to fail a. It's all good now.
