Ticket To Ride Legacy - Spoilers Discussion - How 2 Components Broke A Game
In Ticket to Ride Legacy: Legends of the West, players embark on twelve journeys across North America as 19th century pioneers. The campaign begins on the East Coast, with players working their way to the West from one adventure to the next, meeting challenges along the way. As in Ticket to Ride, completing your tickets will remain your primary goal, but you will need to develop other skills if you hope to overcome the unexpected events and your resourceful rivals. Game after game, route after route, you will continuously fill your vault with earnings. As the story progresses, you will open frontier boxes that unlock new rules, content, and many more surprises.
In the Legacy style, Legends of the West is a unique experience molded by player choices. Each player has their own role to play, allowing them to change the way the story unfolds around them. Combined with evolving mechanisms that change as the game progresses, players will have a new experience every time they gather around the board.
At the end of the twelve games in this legacy campaign, you will have transformed your game into a unique copy that you can continue playing for a lifetime.

    Thanks for your review! I waited to watch this until we finished our campaign. We played all 12 games with the same 5 people over 3 days. I think the luck factor evened out in the end but the concern over which event popped up kept everyone on edge which was fun. There certainly were times when it was a big kick in the face but that kept it interesting. - I defiantly agreed that the circus and gold rush were our two favorites and wished they lasted longer. The haunted wastes were the hardest to deal with but again it made you change your strategy to avoid it for a while. - Point inflation was ok because it kept you in the games longer if your ticket situation wasn't good. We ran out of money during the gold rush board since all 5 of us nearly punched our cards completely and also found dead man's gulch. the winner had over 200 points that round. - If i built in California i always kept a few locomotives in my hand until the end just in case, not a big deal overall. - Tunnels were tough and accounted for most of the routes that were never claimed after the end of the 12 games. - I didn't mind the long game time as i knew going in this was an investment in time to complete and we treated it as such. - I think the employees is a good touch and i frequently changed my choice. i never finished last so i usually had a smaller pool to choose from. -The speed up at the end sucked simply because i got to add my trains last each time since the caboose player was to my left each time so it hurt my placement choices. -Finding Mama Oconnell was certainly anticlimactic and should have involved more strategy. But i thought the story was OK for what it was overall. -Postcards were hit or miss, some were awesome, some were meh, i would have liked more of them to be available for retiring tickets. too many tickets gave you none when you punched them. -The robber was a pest and certainly led to very vindictive placement as the game went on. But i didnt hate it. Overall, i loved it and we are going to get a 2nd one and do the campaign again in 6 months or so. The resulting game isn't bad and the fact they left the shares in is cool because we love Pennsylvania board anyway. I do agree it is a bit pricey for what's essentially a 1-time game but i think the experience made it worth it. I do wish more pieces of it were replayable in the final version.

    Luke, your videos on Ticket to Ride convinced me to finally give it a try a few years ago and now the series is one of my favorite games to play (even Rails & Sails is fun for me). My wife/son/I are six sessions through the campaign and are having a great time together, and so I thought I'd disagree with your critical points. Alas, I must agree with you so far based on our experiences. We are still having fun and enjoying our time together, but we are sure 1st place is already locked in due to either luck and/or taking risks that paid off.

    Me and my girlfriend had the same problem with getting rid of the robber... the event deck gets way too big and we ended up not drawing the event to put him in jail. We ended up seeding that card in the top 6 events just to hurry it up. I think the event deck is a great idea and I liked a lot about it, but at various points the deck got so big and random that there wasn't much cohesiveness with the story/mechanics of it.

    @@TheBrokenMeeple thank you for the reach back, idk if its worth it - not siked about the end game (I took a peak under the insert bc I wondered if they took that route - and they did 🤦‍♂️) now Im trying to pre-plan a way to make keeping the box at the end worth it 😂 not sure how they are going to keep people who are not watching out for these types of things from having a horrible experience like you had...we just opened the robber and Im going to have to completely take out that mechanic as my group would hate it. Game as written before "errrata" would not be a high rating for me. They totally missed the boat with legacy as they could have given players more choices with how employees worked etc. They could have introduced more mechanics from other ticket to rides, and added freaking pens in the conductor box and metal coins instead of the cardboard ones for the price tag it has...pretty disapointed (lucky for me I find disapointment fun) 😈. I would love a video of your favorite way to play Ticket to ride going forward if Legacy offered any ideas that you can add to future games. Id love other beyond the base games for euphoria if you try out its expansion, and for viticulture and scythe etc. How does broken meeple break the game and play your own way to make it fun for you and your group. Potentially designers will get the hint and put you on their playtesting payrol 🤷‍♂️ if thats something you would be into 🤔

    Thanks for your honest review! A few comments: - The reason why new mechanisms are retired after one or a few games is to keep the complexity down. It would be overwhelming if all new mechanisms stayed until the end of the campaign. Sure, this will mean that it will feel like your favorite mechanisms go away too soon. - The reason for the point inflation is to minimize the risk that people give up on the campaign if they feel they have no chance to win. - The earth quakes in California are not that bad. You just need to keep a few locomotives in your hand to repair the bridges at the end of the game. - The curses in Haunted Wastes are also not that bad. You can discard them by discarding any three train cards from your hand. Building the tunnels is risk-reward. The ghost train usually goes away about at the same time as all tunnels are built. - There is plenty of luck in the campaign for sure, but I think it is designed to be an experience rather than a competitive strategical game. - I found the 1901 game to be great. Was your main objective that the game is too long?

  • @TheBrokenMeeple

    @TheBrokenMeeple

    6 ай бұрын

    You make it sound like it's easy to acquire locomotives in bulk on the "off chance" you get hit. And while you ain't using those locos for useful stuff, others are ahead of you. Same goes for ghost train and that's a turn and a half of drawing cards wasted to get rid of an obscene nerf where as others can get off fine by luck. Yes it's not meant to be strategic but it should not also be a roll off either. I could literally roll a die to determine the winner in this case. Point inflation didn't impact the expected outcomes at all as I mentioned in the other review. 1901 is certainly too long but the elements it has are either dumbed versions of the legacy campaign or stuff that's been done before in other expansions but better.

    My group enjoyed the gimmick of the circus and we lost in in game 6. In game 7 my girlfriend got a postcard that needed the circus. That seems to be a flaw of the game, is that the postcards either come in too early or too late depending on what they reference, and then you miss out on those big bonuses

    The Financier is just a super powerful character in general so it busted one game and then dominated others by itself. Were you using the new errata'ed version or the original rules as per the rulebook and card itself? If you were using the original rules then I really don't know what you did to lose your game frankly as it can win by auto pilot.

    I keep coming back to this video, and the Financier as written is 100% broken. I had it for both the games it was available. I wasn't even playing trains, I was just paying money to build on trackbeds with my own colour so I'd pretty much reimburse myself every single time. If I had needed the tunnels for my routes, I'd have done the same there too It definitely needed that errata. It seems there are a number of errata being thrown around by (I think?) people on the development team on the BGG forums, including for the Financier, the Robber event card, and the anti-Robber post card. Bit of a shame that they had extra time with this game due to delays from COVID and still seemed to miss a few game-changing cards and interactions, but this game could definitely benefit from a 2nd printing with a few balance tweaks.

    It's funny you say the UK map is universally seen as the best TTR. I think it's one of the worst. Firstly, the advanced mode is straight broken with more than 2 players. Water Tenders technology is straight broken and there's only 2 of them so in more than 2 players the 3rd and 4th player can't win before the game begins, as the first 2 players should always buy Water Tenders turn 1. My bigger problem is the technology aspect ultimately isn't interesting. Games always tends to follow the same pattern of everyone fishing around for locomotives for technologies to lay their routes. You don't have time to buy any technologies not related to laying routes which might have actually mixed the game up a bit, because you're too pinched on locomotives, and some of the technologies are just ridiculously bad. Booster why would you ever spend 2 locomotives to be able to use 3 cards instead of 4 as a replacement of a locomotive, you're never going to have the time for that to be worth it. Same applies for the technologies that cost 4 locomotives, interesting ideas, but you're never going to have time to spend 4 locomotives on these.

  • @TheBrokenMeeple

    @@TheBrokenMeepleI think it was admitted the advanced mode wasn't tested, and was just because they had extra cards, which is also why there are only 2 Water Tenders, which as I say makes it unplayable. As drawing 3 cards instead of 2 from the start is just an unbeatable advantage, especially when everyone is looking for locomotives anyway. I just tend to find technologies are a nice idea in theory, but in practice, just add a step to the game that plays practically the same every game.

    I have played a lot of Ticket To Ride and I agree. The only reason I ever play UK is because its flipside Pennsylvania is one of my favorite versions, and I carry games in my backpack to go on mass transit, so 2 games in 1. It's kind of tedious having to just focus on technologies instead of on your tracks. The bots will buy the 3 4 5 technologies and the ferry and slap the long routes down all over the place, but they don't go for the New York route at all and so they are easy to beat. Getting lucky drawing locomotives and getting the New York train route before anyone else has to pay extra locomotive for it is a major determining factor in who wins on either standard or advanced against real people.

    How did you end up with a 25+ card deck of events? Were you not retiring one every game and retiring the events that related to functions/mechanics that were no longer in the game?

  • @TheBrokenMeeple

    @TheBrokenMeeple

    7 ай бұрын

    The 25 was a guess number on the fly, the point I was making was that there's a sizable amount of events in the deck and you don't see many in a game. So having critical events rarely appear is not good. You only retire the ones from completed events and one per game but that still leaves a lot of them left. Remember you only use 3 newspaper cards in 4 player and you won't go through the train deck twice so you're not seeing many events in a game and even then the critical events need to be acted on before the next event comes.
